I seem to recall that I briefly saw an article on Boeing offering the B717 as a BBJ. Is this true or is it just a figment of my imagination?

It's called the 717 Business Express. Not really a BBJ equivalent/rival, it's a corporate shuttle, 60 business class seats aimed at regular city-pair company trips, NBAA IFR range just over 3,000 nm.
