View Full Version : Changing who Windows is registered to

I ... err... aquired a laptop last year in an unusual fashion, and it's annoying me more and more that it's not registered to me. Every time I do anything it comes up with someone else's name/place of work.
Is there any way I can change this? Or would it require reinstalling Windows?
I'm running XP pro...
Another question: How do I change the default options so when I open a folder it gives me a list of files, in order of file type, rather than a thumbnail view in alphabetical order? There doesn't seem to be anything suitable under 'folder options'...?
Thanks in advance!

and........
folder views (http://www.geekgirls.com/windowsxp_fileviews.htm)
Anyway where'd you nick it from:suspect: :suspect: 'unusual fashion' indeed.:E
This means fiddling with ones registry........usual disclaimers apply;)

You could always get back in one night - when nobody is watching - and put it back!!

Open the folder you want to rearrange. Click View/Arrange Icons by/type. Click View again and select 'list' Yes... but every time I move a level I have to go through the whole process again. Which p155es me off. :* And I can't work out how to change the default.
And I didn't nick it!
Short version - it was a loan machine while mine went in for repair. They sent mine back, but didn't organise collection of this one. I'm still waiting for them to tell me where to send it. :E
I've now changed the registration details through regedit.exe, but installed software still thinks I'm her. Would I need to reinstall everything?

Most programs have some place where you can enter/edit user information. For example, in Word it would be Tools-Options-User Information.
So it's either finding out where these secret :E little places are, or reinstall.
Regarding your folder options problem, you can always set one folder the way you like it and apply the settings to all other folders by means of Extras-Folder Options-View(maybe Display, im guessing these ones, since I'm running on a german OS).
Good luck.

Aerbabe, to change the view in all folders:
Open Windows Explorer, then
Tools
Folder Options
View
Go through the list, select and unselect as preferred
then click the "Apply To All Folders" button.
Edited to add:-
Whoops! That didn't cover the icons issue. From XP's Help:
To make all folder views the same
Open a folder and select a folder view.
You obviously know how to do that, AB, as described in your 2306 post on the 9th)
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Apply to All Folders.
Note
To reset all folders to the settings that were in effect when Windows XP was installed, click Reset All Folders.
Cheers

Okay Keygrip, everyone except you. :p I-I
Ozzy - What an incredibly kind and generous offer. I'll think about it.
No.
TCS - It was originally "High Flying Bird". Then Tricky Woo started calling me 'Scary Woman' (I've no idea why... honest :O ), so someone (flapsforty) changed it to "High Flying Scary Woman". Then, I was talking to Pilotwolf about piranhas, and I said their reputation for being viscious and nasty was entirely undeserved, and really they were quite nice. Which we decided was a bit like me. I've not got round to asking flapsforty to change it back yet...
