I was there in April. Nepal is beautiful and the people fantastic. If you have the rating there is a good chance youll get on something. Noone needed Twin otter pilots or B1900D F/O's but if you can fly a Dornier 228 or a Saab, you'll probably get in. This is on a canadian licence, I don't know about FAA.

for an F/o on the dornier it will probably be local pay of about USD$340 per month. its not much but I was paying USD$2 for a nice room with a balcony.

If your serious about working in these countries Middlepath dont expect European salaries unless you get on an expat contract. Where I live I am on fairly low money compared to europe, However I have a good lifestyle that I enjoy and have an apartment that I doubt I could afford back home any way. If you dont like it dont do it, I however like it.

ha ha,
just a single dude trying to get his butt in an airplane. Thats what the local pilots get so why would they pay us more, unless there was a shortage. All the pilots were trained in Canada and US so their licences are all the same. Nepal is not the place for even a reasonably competitive wage, but you can't deny the life experience and the satisfaction of starting the day off with a scenic flight around Mt. Everest.

Do you need a type rating to get hired in Nepal? I'm talking about the FAA sort that is required for 12,500 lbs and up.
Anyone know of any operators there looking for Caravan drivers?
Are the Maoists going to shoot at me?

the maoists are actually quite nice and they don't shoot foreigners because they know the economy depends on us. No more caravans in nepal after the last crash. You need a type rating on what you'll be flying to get a validation and more importantly to get a work permit. no one will pay for your type rating there. Furthermore, the validation lasts only 1 year after which you would need to get a nepalese licence or pay some people off. Bribes are the way to go so the aviation authority will not deal with you, they want to talk to the company that will hire you. get the JP fleet index, all the contacts are there and call. All the pilots are great and willing to offer advice.
