k thats basically the question. can u do anything of that sort in UAE,Saudi Arabia,Oman,Bahrain and all? Lets say you are leaving for a flight and your gf/wife kisses you infront of some other people. Does that lead to the "beheaded" ceremony? :}

An Australian and a German caught 'French kissing' in the emirate of Dubai have been given six-month jail terms suspended for three years under condition they do not reoffend, a local newspaper reported in the United Arab Emirates yesterday.

The Dubai Court of First Instance found a 26-year-old Australian man, and a 26-year-old German woman guilty of kissing in public.

Names for the couple were not provided. They were also fined 1,000 dirhams ($570) each for being under the influence of alcohol.

Dubai, one of the seven sheikhdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates on the Arabian Peninsula, is the commercial hub and the most permissive emirate in the UAE.

Nonetheless, alcohol consumption is strictly controlled and public displays of sexuality forbidden.


In fact, since March 2002, Dubai Police have a "Department for Tourist Security" who carry brochures, in both English and Arabic. - "The brochures supply tourists with important guidelines about safety and security measures, the kind of violations they might be punished for, one of which is kissing in public places."

You cant consider all of the ME to be the same, if this couple were caught committing the same offence in Saudi they would have to explain:

1: Where the alcohol came from.
2: What was their relationship.
3: What they were doing.

The punishment for the fist one is a long visit to a local jail, but if they happened to be married to others they could face of punishment of death..........

Not forgetting our religeous police friends (Muttawa) in KSA.

No signs of public affection must be shown between a man & a woman, especially in Riyadh, up to 1 year ago when I left.
You must carry an arabic translation of your wedding certificate, if you are challenged in the street by a Muttawa.

If you cannot produce a certificate & there are a group of them, you may be physically bundled off to the Muttawa station. These are not normal police but religeous defenders of moral values, a large proportion are from the petty criminal fraternity, at sentencing they have a choice, serve in the Muttawa or go to Gaol.
I know which one I would choose.

Usually a nice beating with perhaps a broken bone is the usual outcome, of a visit to the Muttawa Station.

Having said that, I felt much safer on the streets of Riyadh than the streets of London, perhaps some of the values & harsh penalties should go from the Middle East to the West?

I would go back to live there when it settles down.

As always, it depends where you do it!! In any of the international hotels not a problem, in front of Jumeirah Mosque just before Friday prayers might prove a snag!

Also referring to the Aussie and German, under the influence of alcohol. Who knows how far the 'french-kissing' had gone?! Meeting family and friends at the airport isn't a snag but shagging them in arrivals could prove a little too inconsiderate.

In Sept'96 saw a local "doing" a Russian "pro" on a side street off Deira square.
It was about 2 a. m. He was drunk, she was supporting herself on his Toyota Landcruiser. Not inside - outside the car!
In early '97 they took the cheap girls from the former Soviet republics off the streets in DXB and prices skyrocketed...
Don't know about now. Last time was there in April '99...
