Dayglo monitor screen

[Just an other number]

My monitor screen has decided to go totally dayglo - vicious pink, orange and turquoise. It's been trying to do this sporadically for a few weeks and has been solved by switching the monitor on and off. Then a week of no problems. Today there's nothing I can do to stop it. And it's horrible to behold!
So my question to the experts - time for a new monitor or is it software, or what?

Computer is Compaq Presario 5020, Intel Celeron 300MMX, 4MB AGP display card, monitor is Compaq Presario MV5020, bought 1998.

From the symptoms you describe and the on-off fix that worked until now but doesn't any longer, I'd say it's time for a new monitor. Has it had much use?

Can you borrow another monitor? If the borrowed one works ok it pretty much confirms that yours is crook.

Presume it's not LCD in which case it sounds like a degauss (http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci213666,00.html) is in order..can't find your monitor on Google so can't tell how to do that - but if you have the manual it should have instructions to that effect.

I went into the office this morning and brought home my IBM monitor (when I say MY, I mean THEIRS).
No problems and the definition/focus is so much better.
Off to buy a new monitor tomorrow.

Sounds like a "dry joint" somewhere (a soldered connection that has failed, probably due to the temperature cycling of repeatedly being switched off and on.) In the "good old days", TV repair men were pretty good a spotting and fixing these, nowadays, a new one is probably going to be cheaper and more reliable... :rolleyes:

I think RTFM has got it right with a dry joint.
When you get your new monitor, give the old one to a friendly avionic man, and see if he will run over the circuit board with a soldering iron. Hopefully this will cure the snag, and will give you a spare monitor for future use.

So I borrowed a monitor from the office.
Everything OK.
Meanwhile I dumped mine face down on the sofa.
This morning took the office monitor back to work.
Plugged my old one back in -
No problems now!

The answer is -
any monitor problems - unplug it, turn it upside down, shake it to the left etc...
