Does anyone have recent experience of flying in the USA on a JAR PPL licence?
I got my licence last summer and was looking to take my hols stateside to build a few hours and take in a change of scenery (Florida seems quite nice).
I am aware that the FAA has (understandably) tightened things up for visiting foreign pilots wanting to hire and fly N reg a/c and I think I need to apply jointly to the FAA and CAA for a flying permit to be issued (provided I check out OK).
Is this a straightforward exercise or a real hassle? How long does it take and do I need to apply many months ahead of when I want to go? Is there a more simple route ie. are there any clubs with G reg a/c stationed in the US that are willing (and able) to hire to visiting Brits with JAR licences? Is there any overriding Federal law that prevents this without further checking out and form filling (not that I have anything to hide of course - just want an easy life!). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Also, any recommendations as to friendly schools/clubs near some interesting flying (and beach) areas where I can rent a 172 and take any check rides etc? I am also tempted by a flying excursion to the Bahamas (from Florida) as a further challenge, but is this likely to create a minefield of red tape?
