What's with the rumour about ek suspending recruiment for the foreseeable future. I've heard that it's something to do with the engine problems on the B777 and the delayed (yet again!!) delivery of the A340's.

Have also heard that EK might be suspending recruitment shortly. Perhaps due to the approach of Gulf War 2.

I've heard just the opposite...EK needs approx 50 more pilots by the end of the year!?!

A friend of mine went thru the selection last week and it was all systems go. Emirates are recruiting more than ever, rumour is they may even increase the intake due to new aircraft orders.

Fully agree Obi Wan Kirk and Flat Spot...Absolutely thru!!!

Next year crews for the equivalent of 19 new aircraft, will be hired. This includes about 15 330 & 777 and a few 340 which will be double crewed. This logically means more than 1 new aircraft per month.

Recruitement is turning on a never seen rate, for the ones in the hold pool defenitively good news!

Trust me, we are getting the planes, we need the Pilots, A340 arrival has slipped a little (month or two) until June, but only for the first one or two, after that as planned.

Recruiting to step up again in the next few months.

With the hold file bulging, priority given to 330 / 777 endorsed candidates.

There have been many non-rated pilots accepted recently so this priority is new for recruitment.

With a high interview failure rate at times, it may not be long before the pool of already endorsed candidates dries up.

Good luck all, keep plodding away, EK expansion a way to go yet!

I'm starting to worry a bit. I have sent in the internet application form over 3 weeks ago and have not received a reply. I am 44 yo 8400 hrs total, 3900 multi-engined RPT jet (930 jet command), am I what they are looking for? Is there another way to send a CV in? Replies please

Just wait. I know guys who have been in the hold pool for over a year. "Don't call us, we'll call you" is applicable. Keep updating.
BTW, the "I am what they need" attitude is something they may not like all that much. Good luck anyway.

Guys...just received a Dear John email from them, the reason :

they still require 1000hours, multi jet, multi crew experience.:(

Hi!

It seems that you are EK staff or someone well informed on what's going on over there.

May I ask you something: I am a wide body (Efis, non Airbus, non 777) Captain, with more than 12,000 hr, almost 9,000 as PIC on jet transport aircraft and relatively young at the high 40s.
I filled the online application form and after a week got a response stating that they are not requiring DECs for a while.(I've clicked the corresponding "captain" field when asked for position sought, instead of F/O).

Do you think there are chances into the foresseable future EK would consider hiring high experienced wide body DECs?
If, what would be the probatory F/O time for Captains with such experience level? Is there a seniority list for new hire F/Os, regarding upgrading to captain?

Best regards!

With the planned expansion you would have thought there would be a future need for DEC but the Sept 11 has dumped a lot of quite experienced ex-Capts in the EK camp and all are expected to achieve commands right on the 3 year limit.

If it got tight then EK will probably use their "accelerated command" rule, but they don't envisage requiring DECs at any stage. So we're told.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.:(

Full Forward.

EK has hired almost exclusively former captains, because of the fast lead-in time to command, and because the market is in their favour.
There is very very little chance that we will ever see DEC in EK. There is an accelerated command path, which might upgrade you 6 months faster. If you really want the job, do as us: Turn in your four stripes and enjoy living in Dubai. Command will come soon enough.

Thanks for the nicefully straightforward replies.

I don't know your present professional status, but, frankly speaking, do you think it would worth, after all these years as being called Mr.Captain, bearing the hard earned 4 stripes for almost two decades, on a stable job (though a misery salary...)
downgrade to copilot?
And expect to be checked and treated as a rookie by somebody sometimes half your experience? Is there a seniority list for F/Os? Based on what?

If the salary really meant you could really change your lifestlyle, maybe. But is this the case?

Why the necessity to advertise for two exective pilot positions in Flight when EK prides itself on being able to select only the best? Surely with their exceptional talent of picking only exceptional pilots they would have dozens of exceptional candidates within!!!

Fullforward,

If you want a job with EK, don't let your pride get in the way. If you really WANT the job, you should have no problem considering hopping into the right seat for a wee while. The bloke on your left won't treat you like a rookie. You would be treated like a person the captain is flying with. If you have so much experience and have been a captain elsewhere for so many years, that is by no means going to make the guy on your left think any less of you.

Are you from North America? The description of a first officer and a captain is very different over there than in Europe/Mid East/Australia. I read an interesting article in Airliners or Airways magasine on the road to being a captain. The article is based on flying in the US, and kept emphasising if you are a new first officer, your main job was to set the flaps, raise the gear and do a good job filling out the paperwork. If you were LUCKY, the captain may allow you to land, but only in the finest of weather. This is not the same over in Europe and the Mid east. The two guys up front take on an equal amount of work. Unless the weather is FAR too hazerdous for a ROOKIE F/O, the flying works on the captain flying one leg, F/O the next and it carries on alternating like that. No waiting to see if the captain will allow you to take off or land. Its standard procedure to allow both pilots to alternate with each sector. Yes, the captain is in charge and has the last say, of course, but it is more of an equal team effort in the flight deck.

I am not an EK pilot, but hope to get the chance some day in the future. I know a good few EK pilots, mostly captains and they are a good bunch of folks. Not the type of guys who will say "shut up, Im the captain, Ive got four stripes. Do what I say!" With your type of seniority, you couldn't be treated with any less respect than an equal other on the flight deck. Dubai is an awsome place, with great people, great lifestyle and an airline with the finest fleet of planes in the world. If you have the oppertunity to join, sod the pride aspect. There is nothing wrong with sitting in the right seat for a while and with (what sounds like) a big salary and package increase, you would be daft not to make a go at it.

Good Luck

BYB is pretty well on the mark, EK does not recruit pilots direct to the Left seat, 3 years to command is pretty well the norm nowadays, most people pass their command upgrades because they are recruited correctly to start with.
Cockpit gradient is pretty shallow MOST of the time, you will be treated largely as an equal MOST of the time.
Emirates is a great airline to work in for all kinds of reasons, wether you can give up a left seat for a few years and occasionally bite your tounge is up to you.
Finally to all those who are applying, don't give up, the recruitment system takes time, no matter how much experience you have.

My main concern is, once admitted as FO, will be a seniority list regarding promotion to captain or at least clear rules and criteria to do so when the needing arise?
And as for lifestyle at Dubai, with FO salary, what one would expect?

Ghostflyer
7th November 2002, 14:22
Full forward,

Yes there will be a seniority list and you will be promoted in order of seniority. Sorry if I have mis-read you but.... Your previous posts give the uncomfortable feeling that you think because of your previous background you deserve to jump in at the top of the tree. Guess what, once you have the requisite experience, you actually don't get more experienced with more hours just older.

If you are totally command orientated and money focused Dubai will not be the place for you. You have to want to live here and have the humility to suck up 3 years as an F/O before taking a command. Everyone EK recruits are selected on the basis of joining to be captains in short order.

Hei, Ghost,

Sorry for giving you a wrong impression.

I am just discussing options here. It is not a matter of being more or less humble, captain or money oriented (in one or more senses ALL pilots have the two last orientations...)
It is just a matter of giving up a stable situation for some degree of uncertainity.
All the process of building up a career is serious and thoughtfull. At a certain point in life you have to balance very well the pros and cons.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I too have about 12000 hours and several thousand of them in the "Command" position.

However, that doesn't mean that I should be able to "Jump" ahead on a seniority list.

Furthermore, there are two of us in the front of the airplane because they just happen to be built for two. Heck, I recall the days of three on a regular basis and guess what? Yep, there were three of us. Not because there were any favors being handed out. We were all there because we were all REQUIRED!

So, what's my point? The fact is that I'm a little annoyed with all the "Command" and "Four strip" comments. Face it boys and girls, with few exceptions, those of us who wear four bars do so because someone gave us the priviledge. It is not a Right!

Four bars, three bars, two bars, and the fine folks in the back. We are all in this together, and frankly, I like to hear input from everyone so WE can do the right thing when necessary!

Think about it "Captain Sir!"

For me, I am very hopefull that I can trade in my four bars, for an opportunity to wear less at EK.

please don't waste your valuable command time and do not apply, your attitude will be spottet during the interview.

Many of us EK dudes gave up our widebody command and we have no problem with it.

Don't listen to the negative replies you are generating. Some people here are a bit touchy about the "C" word. Many because they have been given the opportunity to sit in the LHS of a big jet at a very young age and are sensitive about older more experienced guys saying that they are not deserving (or more correctly that the older more experienced are more deserving), which is entirely incorrect. If you have a command here, you probably deserve it, and if you trade in your old command to come here, then you must sit in line and wait your turn. What you are doing is exactlly the right thing. Find out the facts before coming. Not that everything here is always fact. But the fact remains that coming to the desert is a big lifestyle changes and dare I say it, has some enormous risks associated with it. So continue to ask the questions that some guys find offensive, because only you can decide whether it is right for you.

But, wow! Suddenly it becames a psycossocial laboratory, were complexes, vanity, frustrations are easily driven and spilled out.
Slow down, boys!

A couple of quick questions for those of you in a better position to judge than me: I have about 2,500 hrs, nearly 1,000 hrs jet time - in short I am close to EK's minimum requirements. Am I even slightly competitive with these numbers? Has anyone been hired with so few hours? To those of you hired recently, what were your flight times?

I am 43 years old and was a Hong Kong Police officer for 18 years so my flying experience is not comensurate with my age.

Also, what is the retirement age at EK?

Thanks in advance.

I know a chap who has just been offered a position with EK and he has accepted. I think that goes to show that there is no recruitment suspension of any sort currently in force. He has put in a heap of work for the selection process and he deserves to do well but he had to wait nearly a year after filling in the on line application before getting the nod to come to DXB for the sim and interview. I guess he must have circa 6000 hours and most of that on medium and heavy jets before anyone asks. It seems that people who have the hours (6000+) are being told if will be three years to command!

I just received a negative reply from EK. I applied online about a month ago. I have 3850 TT most of it on the BAe146, with 2650 jet, (including 750 jet PIC). Anyone knows what are competitive minimas?

Sorry to hear about your bad news :(

It seems that circa 5000 hours and upwards is a reasonable 'ball park' figure for you to get called to DXB for the selection process. Widebody time can only be regarded as a distinct advantage. Take some encouragement from the fact that EK will still be expanding in the future and you will have the opportunity to try again if you ever wanted to. ;)

I applied to EK about 5 weeks ago and havn't heard anything at all, am I right in thinking that they will get back to you with a Yes or No, or does a No mean that they won't notify you at all ? I did get an automated reply the same day I applied online saying that they had received my application.

Jumpingdoc, Thanks for the reply!

I have tried the "Emirates Group" but the only pilot position offered was for training pilots. I have been a Training Captain and sim Instr. but on aircraft types not flown by Emirates, so I thought it wouldn't be approporiate to apply. I was looking for just a line pilot application and still have not found it. Do you or anyone else for that matter have an address for just a line pilot application for Emirates.

Thanks,
