I've got a HP pavilion and it has a cricket living in it. The virtual insect chirps away day and night, whether anyone is using the machine or not. It sounds off for minutes at a time, "chirp chirp chirp, chirp chirp chirp..." Anyone maybe can point me to a way to eradicate the blasted thing?

are you running themes on your PC?

There's nowt so queer as folk!
I wouldn't be without my (very quiet) mouse clicks. The feedback they give me tells me when my mouse click has succeeded.
If the sound irritates you, maybe just turning the volume down very low would help and you wouldn't lose the benefit the clicks provide.

No, not running themes. Sometimes the thing goes really ape, as if it is trying to attract attention while no-one is in the room. And when it goes off when I am trying to concentrate on the program I am using it is very annoying. I can stop it by turning down the sound of course, but then have to remember to turn it up again later. Be better if I could isolate the cause and remove it. It is very loud and very annoying.
