Had a trip to Accra, toilet truck wasn't working ground crew dumped **** out onto tarmac. Set the tone for the next two days. Hotel had beer rationing, could only order in room and only recieve an opened bottle, limited to two beers. Water in hotel was off so had to use what had been saved in bath, pretty scungy, to flush loo, on entering the room it was obvious that last occupant hadn't bothered, staff left that to me. Bed initialy had no sheets on and it looked like numerous virgins had been deflowered on it.Balcony sported a rooster who seemed to think it was his. We went to the zoo and proudly shown a lot of empty cages. "In this one there used to be a lion, and here is where we used to have the pygmy hippopotamus.... 4 out of 7 crew got food poisening at the restraunt we went to, we couldn't face the idea of eating at the hotel. At least it was a major attack of the !!!!s with attendent nausea.
We were delighted to be able to leave and I haven't been back, it could have just been they were having a bad day but I wasn't keen to have another try.
Funnily enough I still rate that as worse than being chucked inside by Idi's soldiers in Uganda after I landed there just after the Israeli raid, though the consequences could have been much worse, probably because I was so fr....ng terrified I blanked most of that one out.Didn't get the !!!!s there but that was probably because they didn't feed us. Crew were pretty pleased to leave there as well. Beautiful place otherwise.

Before I started my aviation career, I met a fltcrew on a one day stopover in Minsk, Belarus. They used very dirty words to describe their stay there.
IMHO the worst stops are the boring places, Bremen, Jüvaekyla (yuck) or Varna (during winter). But then again, I haven't had any stops in fancy places.

Gentlemen,
I cant decide between the following 2 dreadful layovers which was the worst.
Firstly there was Tammanrasset in the Sahara region of southern Algeria, this place is quite unspeakable............
Also as bad was Baku in Azerbaijan, the room was the end of the world, full of cockroaches and filth. Food non-existant, which was probably just as well!!!!!!!!

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. If the Planet earth ever required an enema, the tube would be inserted there. To imagine a slip in Riyadh, just hail a cab, ask to be taken to your local police station, and then ask the friendly copper to lock you up for 5 days. In their tumble drier.
Best thing for that vile place would be a 50 Megaton airburst. Actually, make that 100 Megatons, just to be sure.
Nowhere else does "V1" sound so sweet...

Riyadh!?
R U sure?
I have very fond memories of the place-then again, we were invited over to a Yank compound for "refreshments" ;)

I refuse to back down on Riyadh, AJ. :) Make it 150 Megatons, just to be doubly certain.
Yep, I've been to compounds too, and sampled the homebrew by the unshaded pool in 50 degrees heat, it's the place itself that gets my vote; state repression, repression of women, climate, complete lack of ANY fun outwith the walls of a guarded compound, and always the threat of the bus being stopped by the religious police (fine breed of intelligentsia they are.)
Never was a finer place invented for amending flying manuals, sewing missing buttons onto jackets and cleaning out Nav-bags.

I don't agree with Riyadh either. Although it is everything SS says, and more, as long as you're in the Marriott or Hyatt and not the Sahara (at the airport) at least it's clean and the food's good.
My worst is the same as Paterbrat (2nd post) except the place was D'jimeana (however you spell sh@th@le) in Chad. Everything he says is true for there.

I'm with £6 on this one, Riyadh is the pits! Coming up against the Mutawa (religous police) is not a nice experience when all youre doing is minding your own business in a taxi............ Their ranting is outrageous.

Point taken about Riyadh-however, I think one gains a different perspective when having to live there for any length of time-the social life was great, I thoroughly enjoyed the desert 4WD'ing, the weather was heaven (to me) etc.
Religion does spoil things somewhat though.
Anyway, back to the topic!
May I designate another hell-hole?-it's our old friend LOS I'm afraid... :)
I'm struggling to say one good thing about it... :)

Yeah, LOS is (or "was" for me :) ) bad...
As for present, well, you Brits sure not gonna like that, but I will name BHX http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif
Good ATC. And that's it.
Dreadful handling agent (my airline's fault, they always go to the cheapest), p... .. a.... security checks (sure, we are gonna bomb our own flight ;) ), transportation to the hotel might take some time (40' wait for the bus, that's real nice when you're on a split duty!), hotel that has only the brand going for it as it is dirty and unwelcoming and the food (breakfast) is atrocious!
