Can anyone shed some light on why I saw a 747 taking off from 26 at Luton yesterday at 17.30....this may be the norm, but I have never seen it....any thoughts??

Hi Ennie,
I understand that the jumbo is operated by Air Atlanta and doing some charter work to take some folks whale watching somewhere north. It has been doing it for a while now.
Must be pretty impressive taking off from LTN in a 747 as it sometimes hary in a fully laden 737.
Hope the ball is in the middle!

I can imagine it would take up rather a lot of the runway, I know what u mean about heavy 737's out of LTN, was on a jumpseat once going to Barcelona fully laden, that was interesting enough!!!

I was once a pax on an full (about 380 pax I think) CKT L1011 LTN-LCA on a hot August evening back in the mid'90's.
Brakes/tyres were closely inspected during t/around before we boarded and when we departed it seemed like we used all (and I mean all!) of Rwy 26.
Must have looked very interesting from the FD!!
