View Full Version : Should I stay or should I go now?

Anyone here who has been in a similar situation?

Right now I'm working as a FO 737-800 with a charter (24 a/c) outfit in Europe. Mainly charter and some scheduled services. As we're growing very rapidly I'll probably be up for command in about two years (around age 28). But, in this company that will be it careerwise because we only operate 737 a/c.

So, I'm considering to switch to a major airline ( BA,Lufthansa ). Main reason is that I want to fly, or at least have flown in my career, longhaul/widebody aircraft. I might hate it but at least I will have had the experience. Another reason is the variation in fleet and destinations and of course the money is also a factor although the least important one to me.

I enjoy working for my company a lot. If I was to leave it would be purely as a (long)term career plan. Contract flying is not the thing for me because I like the security of a permanent contract.

Why not fly as a captain for a couple of years and then switch I hear you ask. Because I think it's difficult to sidestep from the left to the right seat, and I would go down in salary instead of going up.

Wise careermove or stick to what I've got?

Hey Track,

I hear from guys in your parent company who`ve been looking around, that with your experience you should be able to get in to the right seat of an MD11 with our neighbours in the east. I see your point and think it is a good career move for you to switch to LH or BA. It is nice to be able to change a/c types and routes.

Good luck.
