I'm very interested in the answer to this too. My girlfriend is behind me 100% for trying to get ATPL etc, however, she is concerned that I'll never be around.
How much time do you guys get at home / base? Be interesting to see how this differs between short-haul and Long-haul.

You are already in trouble before you started.
One day she will remind you how much she did to help you get your ATPL.
Don't let guild feelings be your gide we all have to survive on this earth and you need money to do just that.
Pilot wifey's know that very well femi-nazies live from it.
Just be carefull, NEVER STOP flying because of her.

I've been married to a pilot for 16 years now, for the past 11 he has been with a Regional Airline. Because we don't live in the city he is based at, he tries to bid on three and four day pairings, which means he's "not home" for about 16 days out of the month.
What I tell those women who are thinking about a long term commitment with a pilot, is that you get used to it. You have to be the one to pay all the bills and handle household disasters etc. On the plus side, you get the bed all to yourself for half the month! :)
I have to admit, now that I'm used to this lifestyle I would probably go nuts if he was at home every night. As it is, through careful bidding he can stretch a one week vacation into three... by then I'm almost climbing the walls!

Azure, thanks for that honest post. I'm due to leave the military for (Ihope) a civil flying job and want to get just a bit more time at home than I do now! Living in the West Country of the UK I'm v keen to find a decent RHS (jet or even turboprop) job closer than LHR/Luton. Any advice from ppruners would be helpful.

Everybody keeps telling me how lucky I am to be working for a reginal. Home every night. Big deal, I get home everybody is a sleep and I leave before anybody wakes up. I might as well be on a week long trip overseas.

I’ve spent half my adult life jet-lagged, sleeping in hotels and living out of a suitcase. It gets old.
I would like to be home with my wife and children more but the only way to do that here is go in the office. I don’t want to that and I am sure they don’t want me either.
Maybe if I lived in Alaska I would like to be gone more in the winter. Has the cold winter given you cabin fever?
Come on down to the lower 48. It’s still a good time to get a flying job.

I couldn't afford the pay cut. Unless you have some good lead!!

UK Jet short haul:-
Probably see more of my wife (who works three dyas a week) than my neighbours who have demanding office jobs.
Main problem is tiredness from early shifts. Getting up at 0430 several days in a row and I am out for the count when I get home. Also on late shifts I get home after 2300 when she is out for the count too.
Some two sector days allow more time off between shifts.
All in all not too bad these days for a pilot. I used to fly long haul and charter. NEVER NEVER AGAIN. Far too tiring and limited home time is spent adjusting the body clock.
It would make life better is the shifts were better managaged but wasn't it ever thus?
A general comment; on long haul the chat isabout divorces and girlfriends. On short haul the chat is about screaming kids. People are more balanced about life when they get a home social life.

Question put to long haul pilot on an overnight somewhere. " Do you speak to your wife during intercourse.?" Oh yes, if there is a phone handy. :) ;) :)

This story of woe, is one that Im sure many guys out there have encountered.....
My sectors kept me away only 3 nights a week... However wifey got bored.. and after having the roster changed, I came home early, only to find someone else warming my side of the bed http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/frown.gif It was a 10 year marrage.. and left me rather broken... and what with this new ' human factors ' element... I was out of the air for a month.
Anyway... I often questioned my choice to fly, and went through all the ' if only i hadnt ' etc... But I now see that if that sort of **** is gonna happen, ITS GONNA HAPPEN... so for anyone else out there in the same boat... PUT YOUR FLYING FIRST! An aircraft wont cheat on ya!

As a female pilot with other half who also flies, we have been lucky flying for a small regional and seeing each other a lot...
both now starting European short haul...fear we might never see each other again!
