If this has been done already, I didnt see it.

I went to see Cast Away last night, the new movie with Tom Hanks, which was based around Fedex and the crashing of one of their a/c and Hanks being stranded on an island for 4 years. What I'd like to know is did Fedex pay for this, and if so about how much. Also is it damaging to the company that one of their a/c crashed and no wreckage was found etc. Was Fedex paid for the use of their name and was involvment would they have in the technical side of things such as the crash scene etc.

Hope I didnt spoil the story for anyone who didnt see the movie.

More to the point - did he have Meg Ryan as a fellow cast-away? If so, four years might have been acceptable!

(I'd have paid Fedex for the privilege :) )

Hi Guys.
I saw an interview the other night, (Sunday I think)where the interviewer asked Tom Hanks that very question! Mr Hanks said that Fed Ex paid nothing for the publicity, and were paid nothing! They used Fed Ex because they were the largest operator of that type, and that this would make the film more authentic. He also said that Fed Ex helped greatly in the making of the film, by inviting cast and crew to Memphis to see how it all worked. As well as this he mentioned that Fed Ex were not worried that a movie about one of their aircraft crashing would have a detrimental effect on their business! They stated that the public would know that it was only a movie!!! :)
Eff Oh. :) :) :)

Free advertising for Fedex. I am sure they are happy as clams.

Wonder if the same would happen if they carried pax??!!

Likely not!

I'm off to see the film this eve, looks like a goodun.

Just came back from the cinema. Good movie.
Now ,why would FEDEX recuse this free publicity? Their truck in Moscow..a guy trying to show FEDEX cares 200% for your package..and goes on and on. Can't think of better "commercial" than this one that will be seen around the world in a big screen.
But willbav8r is right, if it was a pax carrier then it would be different.

Great movie.
Great for Fedex, you couldn't buy that sort of publicity. Fedex Box and his commitment gets him through, gets delivered and maybe gets him a new life.

Go see it didn't see any technical boo boos either. The crash sequence was extremely well done and it wasn't over til it was over.
Except maybe the corporate jet cabin windows looked like Gulfstream and the aircraft in the background Canadair??

But hey a great movie.

Havn't seen the movie yet only out takes, can't understand though how he survived a crash like that! maybe seeing the bit before/after explains it, but a crash like that unsecured would IMHO be pretty much unsurvivable.

Saw the film - apparently the big boss man that gives a speech when our hero returns is none other than Fred Smith (or whatever his name is) that founded Fedex.

Didn't someone once say there is no such thing as bad advertising?

For anyone that happens to be living in the UK or Ireland, Sky Moviemax are showing a 'movie' if you could call it that at the moment called 'Freefall'. Now Ive said it before, Im not a pilot so I woulnt know the details of accidents or how it is potrayed on TV, but this takes the piss a little bit!! Its a story about a pilot who goes nuts and has to crash the a/c at exactly 35,000ft 'cos the woman he loved did the same thing a few years back, she also was a pilot. It stars Jacklyn Smith her of Charlies angels fame.

Now the aircraft is a bit strange. its everything from a 73, to a 72, to a DC_8!!! have a look its worth a laugh!!!

Willbav8r, don't think Pan Am would agree with that statement...

G'day Gaunty,

Wet blanket Clarrie here!

What about the scene after the prang where, with the fwd fuse broken off and under water, our hero surfaces and is lying in the life raft, unwittingly being sucked into the intake of the still running L/H turbo fan, which as it slowly sinks into the sea explodes as it ingests water?

I saw the movie last night with Mrs Claret and apart from that little bit, didn't cringe once, oh, except for the tooth bit! http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif

I did wonder about that but decided that you could stretch the bow that far  I thought it was the centre engine of an MD11, either way that part of the scene got me going, wondering how he was going to survive that bit, as they still had another 2 hours to fill in, ahhh a bit of poetic license was OK.
Iit was well done as up to the point that they panned to the approaching Fan I had been wondering why you could still hear the loud noise of an engine after the crash and watching the hull sinking to the bottom....and just when you thought he was safe......pass me the Prozac Pete. http://www.pprune.org/ubb/NonCGI/eek.gif
Hope you're enjoying your new command.

Hey, don't give away too much of the movie. I've seen it, but wouldn't like to spoil it for people who still want to go. ;)

Before the crash, when they were diverting around the TS, the 3rd pilot was plotting their position on a chart. Not being a trans-Pacific pilot, I wouldn't know is this is a usual practice.
