Mahdi,
best of luck to you. This sounds like a classic "the grass is greener on the other side" scenario.
I sincerely hope it will turn out that way for you.
Something must have seriously upset you, you sound so angry.
Moving on in this case is definitely the best option, for you and also for those who choose to stay. Nobody likes to hear negative comments and unconstructive criticism. I guess complaining is human nature and a favourite sport in this industry, but it is also draining to the poor souls who are at the receiving end.
Have some mercy.
 Congratulations on your making a choice to change what no longer suits you.

Can someone please answer me a few questions!!!
I just got successful at the interview here in Budapest, and I was wondering if its a good idea to leave everything behind and move to Bahrain?! How much is the salary for the start? Is it true it is only US$1200?
What happenes if during my probation time I say I don't want to work here, I don't like it and I want to go home? Will they let me?Do I have to pay my costs?
Do they take your passport away for the probation time???
Please, its my life am dealing with right now, if you could give me some answers, it would really made it easier for me!!!!!
Thanks Guys!!!

The first time they promised me that i ll earn more than 1500Usd but in the end of the first month they gave less than 950 Usd. When i asked them why they just told me that because of the costs what they invest into me!I was thinking can this be true??? They wont let me to go a fu..in away because of the contract which i still dont get... Which means that i had no chance to live!! Now i am at home and im sure that i ll never use this company again even for flying. the 3 months took more than 4 and a half. I finished without any money because the food was one of the worst that i ever taste. The city was soo boring. All the peoples look at me like a poor unlucky thing

I felt myself like a worker in a Subway :D

Now i m on my way to work for Virgin Atlantic whose promises much more money and many insurances. Do you know sthing about them??

CMJ,
during training, they used to give me around 10 euros a day.It was enough to buy food.Bahrain it's a very safe country...I am sure you will enjoy it....
Give it a try....if you don't like it you can always leave....I am been leaving there for nearly 7 years.....I was in GF for 6 years....

Hi all! Just a few thing i want u to know!

Additional allocations were not paid at all during the three months
probation. Referring to some administrational problems my passport has been
reserved for more than two months. After declaring my will to resign at the
end of the probation they requested to pay back the cost of investments. I
am absolutelly disappointed in the whole company. I will never again work
for such a company. People considered me a homeless. I haven't experienced
any kind of appreciation. I was instructed as a servent of everyone.

good luck :=

Yes Gulf air is consolidating as a regional airline while maintaining key medium long/haul routes. Emirates has alot more money thrown at it than Gulf air, its not rocket science.

Hi Guys!

Well to tell you the truth I have read all the posts here on the forum about Gulf Air and I made my decision finally about moving to Bahrain!!!
My decision is that I AM STAYING on my butt!!!:hmm:
I understand that the more people are the more opinions will be!
But in the end you can see that Gulf Air is rather on the dark side...
I have so many things here in my hometown and I don't want to burn everything up just because of Gulf A.
There are to many things which have fog around it and it is imposible to rely on them!!!
So wish you luck for the future and I really hope that all of you will find the best airline and the best place to live!

Cheers:)

HI,

You are doing the right thing!! I am leaving next month to go back to UK and work for British Airways. I flew for 4yrs in the UK previously and wish I had not left. I have never been so skint in my life with bills still to pay back home. Unless you have no other bills/commitments in your home country,do not even bother!!

Yeah and it is so boring too, unless you have lived a very sheltered life!

The swimming excercise is not hard but you do need to be able to swim and by that i mean float and move not like professional butterfly strokes. As long as you can make it from one end to the other you will be fine. The rest of the excercise you will have a life jacket on, but if your not comfortable in the water this might be a little scary. I would practise but don't stress about it.

Hi

They do take your passport on the first day of induction and you get it back the day you finish your training. If at any time you decide to leave Bahrain during training they will get your passport back. They need to take your passport in order to fill it with the residence visa. And they money is just as they said but its pretty fun once you get out here and you do make alot of friends.

Hi!!!

Im currently with Gulf Air and I can honestly tell you that you have to experience it for yourself. Some people say really bad things about the airline and some people say really good things. Its like everything in life. When your in training school you get your basic pay which I think is 230 Dinars plus 70 dinars every 2 weeks for food and stuff. They have some very nice accomodation here and most of the crew are very friendly. Bahrain is still growing and not as big as probably your use too. There are many nice cafe's, resturants and pubs/bars. There are also many nice hotels where you can spend the day. SOme of them we get into free with our id. Also if your into your nights out there are always ladys nights on and you usually drink free. The most popular place charges 2bd for all you can drink. I love living here and have met a tons of nice friends I will always keep in touch which. The local people who live here are friendly and its not strict like the UAE. Hope this helps

;) :) Hi guys... Gotta say, Gulf Air are a terrible employer. I worked for 2 years without being allowed to take any leave, they treat u with no respect whatsoever and the money is dreadful!!!!!!! The majority of the crew are fed up and their staff turnover must b the highest in the world!! On the plus side though, you do get to go to some great destinations (even if its only for 12 hours!)

I have been with Gulf Air for 11 years.
Alot of you guys are obviously writing in as you have been upset by something , either not getting your request or too many BOm t,rounds..
Gulf Air salary is indeed not high but lets look at this realisticly... what you earn is your pocket money, when you are earning more in the UK ,take away all your costs, rent, petrol driving to work, dry cleaning bill, medications when ill, electricity, telephone and of course tax.. now you tell me, are you that much better off financially ?
Answer is NO, if you say yes, you are mistaken.
Arab people are warm and hospitable and eager to share their culture.Like everywhere there are individuals who are not like this.
True , Bahrain nightlife cannot be compared to UK nightlife, but unlike UK you can go out any night of the week and with free entry into bars and clubs and many ladies nights with free drinks, youre laughing.
Social life in Bahrain is what you make it.If you enjoy outdoor sporting events, horseriding ,swimming, running, cycling, walking, water skiing you will be in your element. If you enjoy hanging out with friends at any of the many and varied coffee shops or going out for meals.. you can get any type of food, any time you want and for a price that is so cheap you never have to cook again.
CMJ i think you made a big mistake in changing your mind, you didnt even come and see for yourself, you just listened to negative peoples views. Why did you go to the interview in the first place?
For those of you wanting to join Gulf Air... follow your dreams.

All crew are entitled to 36 days leave a year, leave must be taken at least once a year and for a minimum of 15 days.
Passports are only taken initially to arrange for your visa and residence permit and as soon as these are done your passport is returned to you.
You are able to leave at any time during training if you decide to and your airfare home is covered by Gulf Air , you do not pay anything back to the company.:D

I'm sorry but what utter nonsense you are talking!!
I don't know what sort of job in the UK would leave you worse off than working for Gulf Air.

It is true that you can live very cheaply in Bahrain, and thats great, however, for those of us who chose to have a life outside of BJs and JJs (the main bar and nightclub where free drinks are on offer most night), "Pocket Money" does not suffice!!

As for the issues that a lot of people have with Gulf Air as an employer. I don't think that it is as simple as a matter of 2 many Bombay t-arounds!! This is part of the job, and although the pax on these routes can be a little trying to say the least, this is all part of the exprience.

In my experience, the problem is that Gulf Air do not deliver what they promise to their employees. In terms of money, holiday, accomodation and working conditions, i.e. 3 crew to care of 257 economy pax!

I just think that people should be aware of what they are getting themselves into before they go. Much lighter workload, better pay and decent working conditions with many UK airlnes.

Grrr.

NooNoo
6th October 2006, 13:40
Oh yeah... I forgot to add.... my moan is about Gulf Air as an employer and emphatically NOT about Bahrain as a place to live. I have never been to such a friendly and welcoming country in my life. The Bahraini people are, in general, warm, generous and extremely helpful.

It is true that nightlife is limited to 1 or 2 cheesy venues or private parties, but it is the people you are with that make it enjoyable. And after all, there is more to life. The restaurants are great but they are certainly not cheap.

There are a great many things to do in Bahrain, its just a shame that while working for GF, you rarely have the time, energy or money to do any of them!!!!:)

good on u zagloud....i agree with a hundred %\

ALL I CAN SAY IS COLOUR YOUR SKY WITH GULF AIR

zagloud
8th October 2006, 00:08
Its a shame that you obviously had such a negative experience with GF.I worked for an airline in the Uk where we did not sit the entire flight, we would eat our meals top of decent in 3 mins, after landing we would load all the ovens for the return sector, clean all seat pockets and 1 unlucky crew got to stand under the wing and direct passengers(in the rain / snow / sun ),our onboard service continued the entire flight. The same cannot be said for GF crew where on most flights we have the luxury of sitting ,eating our meals, reading the papers and chatting with our collegues.
3 crew for 257 passengers is indeed hard work and although happens more than we like during the busy summer months is not a normal thing.Crew shortages are common in all airlines at peak times.
I consider buying a meal of for example chicken biryani for equiv. of less than $4 pretty cheap, or thai green curry ,rice and wine for less than $13 pretty cheap..the list goes on.
Crew are accomodated in luxury apartments , and as previously mentioned by another member most are equiped with gyms and pools, all with internet access, microwave,tv,dvd player, satelite, washing machine,24 hours security and all are fully furnished.
A word of advice to all those either already flying with GF or thinking of coming to join our "family", if ever you have a grievence or something that you think is unfair bring it to the attention of those in the office who have the authority to bring about a change or explain the whys and together work out a solution.
Seek and ye shall find... open your eyes to the great things you have already and dont waste time on the countless things that you lack.
Happy flying and stay safe in the skies and on the ground.

14th October 2006, 14:50
I spent 8 years working for GF and have been back in the UK for a year. If you are 21 years old and want to experience living abroad and having some fun, then join GF. Bahrain is a great place to live and you will have a brilliant time. The accomodation has greatly improved and you wont have any bills to pay except for your mobile phone.
If you are looking for a company which provides a good salary, career progression and a company that cares about its employees, dont go. Its good experience to get a good flying job in the UK but it is very hard work. As for the post which suggested airing your grievances to the management - dont bother. They do not care and they know that you are easily replaceable. There will always be plenty of girls who cant get into BA or Emirates.
I hope that things improve with the new management. It couldnt be any worse.
I dont regret my time there as I made some great friends and I still miss Bahrain. GF could be good with a new management.
Hi to my ex colleagues out there :)

i would like to attend the open day interview in bangkok next month. my problem is i'm not from thailand but i'm willing to go there to attend the interview. when i tried to register fill up the online application form, this is what appears - IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE AND WORK IN A SPECIFIC COUNTRY, DO NOT APPLY
does this mean that if i'm not a resident of thailand, i shouldn't attend? will i receive an invite to the interview?
i'll be spending quite a $$ if i attend so i would just like to make sure that they'll talk to me at least :)

NooNoo obviously has a serious axe to grind with Gulf Air and the argument was holding water right up to saying, In terms of money, holiday, accomodation and working conditions, i.e. 3 crew to care of 257 economy pax!
Not only did this not happen, but if it did it would mean the aircraft departed with less than the LEGAL minimum crew on board. Sorry to burst your ball NooNoo but if you are going to make up lies you need to check your facts first. On the subject of passports, GF will never ever confiscate your pport and you will be free to get it back at any time. The delays are down to the government immigration Dept who can be slow to issue your residence/working visa's.

I was in Gulf Air for 4 years and it was a great experience! For everyone who complains WHY ARE YOU THERE? There is a big difference between Emirates and Gulf Air, they are two diffetent lifestyles.

Ive noticed Gulf Air crew have a bit more fun than Emirates who always look so sad when they walk through the airports even tho they earn more money.
Gulf Air is a little more laid back when it comes to the actual job itself, the layovers are also longer with GF however at times it is a little less organised than Emirates. Basicaly there are good and bad things about both companies.

Gulf Air is not the best pay but for anyone who would like to get their foot in the door into this industry it is a nice job to do for 1-2 years.

GF min cabin crew on 330/340 is 11. Having flown these aircraft for the last 7 years I have NEVER EVER dispatched with less than 10. This happened 3 times in 7 years and was due to crew illness down route. A totally unavoidable situation and one which happens to all airlines at some stage. Noo Noo you are simlpy lying about the crew compliment and should be ashamed of yourself.
I am well aware of legal minimum crew complements thankyou.
No you are not and...
Whats more, my bubble is well and truly intact.
No it isn't!! Your posts expose some other motive for lying so why don't you tell us the real story? Got sacked for too much sickness, too many no-shows perhaps?

NooNoo
8th April 2007, 16:28
vfenext... I'm not lying, after 7 years of GF you should know that the legal crew complement for the A330/340 is 8. this is not my opinion, this is fact. A few years ago, flights were regularly dispatched with 8 or 9 crew members.
My first flight for example I was the 9th crew member. My next (to London) I was the 8th.

FYI... I had very few sick days during my time at GF and no 'no shows' whatsoever. I was actually a very responsible and dedicated crew member. I'm sure I am not the only person who has put a lot in and got not a lot out of this company.

And another thing..... Why are you being so nasty? This is another reason why I left. While there are many lovely people at GF, there are also a number of bad apples who refuse to listen to others experiences.

Maybe here someone can give info...
When i worked for GF, we had a photoshoot with our class at Bahrain Airport . Together with a inflight chef. We were IT751(not 100%sure.
We were told we would get a copy as well, but never did. And i left quite hasty in may 2004 as my mom was sick and flying back and fourth betweem europe and Bahrain was quite exhausthing..

Anyone has tips how i would be able to get info on it?? Or get in touch with others from the classes IT750 and 751??#
Or Sheri or the finnish lady at GF service training??

Any info would be appreciated..

hello Habibis and habibchis!

I have seen the Joint Notice a few days ago...

I assume a lot of people can finally start breathing a bit better in a few months!

I heard that our ex-colleagues at EY etc. are overwhelmed right now by the fact that life on board a GF aircraft was a fiesta afterall, and how obviously there services are not appreciated at all (ex-GF crew's experiences).Off course you get a lot better destinations and at least an aircraft with working reading lights/hot cups or flushing toilets.

and now a bit of the Daily Gossip,

Apparently the A321's are now not coming afterall, but who knows anything as a fact about new aircraft coming to GF.
The flashy on time performance posters in the briefing rooms with an A321 is the best source we will ever have!!

concerning the cabins,
there are plans to convert the GF 340's seats into something more 21th century-ish and the 330's will recieve an all new seat as well.
the current 330 seats would be placed on the GF340's and the 330's get something new.

they are currently reviewing an interim IFE system for the F/C J/C and that would be some sort of a portable DVD player loaded in trolley's, but this is just an option, not even a plan.

Got more rumours and gossip? go for it!

they used to select males, but only bahraini and omani nationals though...

the interview: pretty standard procedure: 1) company presentation 2) groups discussions 3) english test 4)grooming 5) final interview (this was what it was like in January, it may have changed a bit now)

it is not hard, you just need to have what they are looking for, just as in most airlines :)

I have just received an email inviting me to an assessment day. I just have a couple of questions... silly they may be... I really want this!

1. What is the layout of the assessment day? Similar to the others?

2. I wore a skirt to my last 3 interviews but didn't feel entirely comfortable. Was going to wear trousers to my next one, but I have a feeling that being a middle east airline, Gulf Air would prefer skirts?

3. I don't wear that much make-up at my current airline, but again being middle eastern, should I make sure I wear a lot of make-up? My current airline is really relaxed but I want to make a good impression!

Sorry if they are stupid questions, I'm just not sure where I went wrong in my last interviews and am rather nervous :-)

Thanks x

hi, i am quite interested as well in doing an assesment day with gulf air, theyīre coming to spain soon.
i attended several assesment days in others airlines, and i imagine the sequence will be the following approximately:

height reach and weight.
correct documentation (passport, studio pictures, cv, academic and working certificates.......)
english test
one to one interview, group discussion (in etihad you have to choose an object.... newspaper, pen, water, mobile,........
final interviewregarding grooming, yah of course make sure you wear a fresh make-up, neatly tied back hair, business attire (knee lenght skirt, high heel shoes, stockings, not revealing clothes......)
good luck

Hey guys,

I've attended the Gulf Air interview and got a contract! I actually should be so happy but somehow there are no emotions at all. I am not sure if the salary is high enough, especially comparing to EK or EY, and the number of destinations is quite limited as well, neither convinces me the allowances amount.... Is there any GF ex-/cabin crews who could tell about the situation? I am really confused if to go or not!

Thanks everyone

Wow, I just found out that you have been recruited as well! :D When do you start? I have been recruited 26 september, yesterday, and they told me i'd get visa and tickets in around 3 weeks so the start date would be like end of october! What about you, are you coming as well??

cheers, elena

hi EA cabin crew,
i got the job as well and already signed the contract, they told me maximum one month, but i am quite worried about my visa as i was working in another Gulf country...............letīs see i am positive and at the same moment nervous, i hope everything will be ok........... hopefully!!!!!!
working as cabin crew in the Gulf is one of the best experiences in the world :)
i will know the status of my application during this week...... i will keep you informed!!

Hey! I hope it will be ok with your visa status!! As for me, I was reading the contract and didn't really understand what happens if I want to resign during the first year, should I compensate the expenses of the training only or there's something else? Just in case, you know! My friend attended Emirates open day a couple of days ago, and they said they pay like 700€ during the training period, whereas our pay would be like 580€ :suspect:, what do you think of it, is it the same on your contract?

KANELA
28th September 2008, 15:43
Firstly, i think you have to be very grateful for being recruited for Gulf Air because it is a good company and not easy to be succesful.
then, regarding the payment, donīt worry as they pay enough you to eat and live properly; and when you start flying your pay will increases.
if you resign you will have to pay something but................. donīt think about that, try to be positive!!

I think they don't take men, except for Omani, Bahreini and Emirati. My male friend was trying to get in and got an apology letter "you don't meet our minimum criteria", and he's an experienced CCM

I can tell you from my experience, I just passed their inteview on 26 september.

The basic points:

* don't talk too much, i.e. don't answer more of what you are asked, short and nice answer accompanied with a humble smile is the best

* at group activity, they may ask you to do it standing - dont touch your hair, don't cross the fingers, don't change poses every 10 seconds - try to stay relaxed. DON'T start talking first!! DON'T try to be a team leader!! Listen to the others, don't argue, nod and use basic phrases, as "yes, I agree with you", "it is a very interesting idea" etc. It is important HOW you act, rather than what you say

* prepare answers to the questions like: ˇwhy gulf air, ˇwhat's the best and the worst at flight attendat's job, ˇhow would you deal a difficult customer, ˇdescribe a situation when you actually did more then prescribed to help a customer. Answer smoothly, without "ummm", "eeehh", and again, quite shortly and with a humble smile

* be ready to answer basic things about gulf air, when it was funded, what types of aircrafts, what destinations etc

Be aware that you are being constantly watched, so mind the attitude at all times!!

Hope this helps, and good luck!! :ok:

Please. Read the fine print if you get any, you need to know what you are signing up for.

Prepare to be treated like a moron. The company will try to work you as hard as they can. If you object because it is illegal, then expect warning or dimisal. (or standby for an month). Have a backup plan.

The routes are average at best, If you like variety between the third world and 2nd. Then this is the job for you.

The aircraft are old, the passengers expect the best, but you are provided the worst to provide to them. Working entertainment systems are completely optional to Gulf Air, as a World Class Airline.

Just do your homework. There is a high turnover of cabin crew in Gulf Air for a reason.

i received on sunday the mail from gulf air regarding welcome to company and sending several docs like security clearance ans stuff like that.

hiya....well I had a problem with my PP because I had a print from Israel, so normally I wouldnīt be allowed to travel to any Arab state but they were really kind to me that I could just get a new one....hopefully itīs enough:rolleyes:

Well...I am healthy, I have done the blood and urine test already in my country and everything seems to be fine. The only thing is that I am not sure about my eyes. They havenīt told us if theyīve got some limit like 6/6 or we would have to have a perfect 20/20.

I am wearing contacts and my vision is fully corrected by that but not sure if it would be enough for them....well....have to wait....still I donīt wanna be disappointed and jobless after all :hmm:

Do you know something more about that?

I was checking the net yest and became even more confused by all the comments on other forums. And one thing is for sure....there is the least info about Gulf Air among the others like Emirates or Etihad.

Still it is a little bit strange that we donīt have to do the medicals before we fly to Manama.....

Anyway....thank you a lot for your reply and hope to see you in Bahrain...:)

Hey. I've just got home from the Gulf Air assessment day in Dublin, started out with 12 people and got narrowed down to 7 by the end of the day. I was one of the lucky 7 to be offered the job. The day was as I expected, typical layout. It all went well the 2 ladies from Gulf Air were Judith & Rhonda both from Northern Ireland. Really nice ladies, make you feel really welcome etc. Really wasn't expecting to be offered the job there and then so was in total shock once we found out!!
Anyone any questions let me know sure!

Hiya Nuria.....my name is Sonia and I am from the Czech Republic....and hello Vix85....I am not surprised by what you wrote....it was the same in Prague....only 13 girls showed up and 3 lucky ones were selected....

most of the girls didnīt make it through because of the grooming test....like one girl had something on her hand which wasnīt that visible and still didnīt get through...but sheīs got the job with the Etihad....so, it really depends. And also the weight was important....like I donīt think that British Airways or any European airlines would count it so much....but thatīs Middle East....so, welcome to Miss Airline :O

My opinion is that they didnīt advertised that much in the Czech...only a short article in the newspaper and I found out about the recruiting on www.cabincrew.com (http://www.cabincrew.com) ...was slightly nervous as some people in the forum were writing really bad things about Gulf Air but for me it is not about the money....so, I donīt understand how people can even talk about it or trying to compare the salaries between Emirates, Etihad and Gulf....:ooh:

On the other hand Emirates come to the Czech every six months and they usually take 2 people from 100....so, I wouldnīt really waste my time.

Hey...Nuria, and how was it with Qatar Airways? Why did you quit? One of the girls that was selected with me used to work for Etihad but she would no go back and didnīt really wanna talk about it........ and you?;) did you enjoy it....why that change?:)

Hi there, i recently just had a Gulf Air Interview.....this has to hae been the most easiest interview ever! its clear that Gulf Air are more bothered about image! If you have any visible scars or tattoos on your legs, arms, neck which passengers will be able to see dont bother going to the interview. There was more than half of the girls got turned away at the glasgow assessment day! even one girl who wore a brace!

The first part is a an english test, reall easy just make sure you read it carefully.

Then its group execise's, we were asked to discuss what are fears were and if we had a million dollars, the two ladys walked around the group making notes...just be your self and you'l do great!

Then it was Grooming, they check your neck, arms and legs. The also ask you to smile so they can see your teeth!

Then they decide which girls are going home because of there grooming!

Finally its the interview, there was 4 girls in my interview and the two lads from gulf, they asked us to give an example of excellent customer service and bad customer service, they also asked us what we knew about Gulf Air and then "when can you start".
we waited outside the room for a few seconds then they called us all in and offered us the job!

Everyone who had the interview at the end got the job!

Hope that helps,

I was one of the lucky ones and i hope to start in about 2 months.

Good Luck (remember to smile)

Hi download:)...I think the others have said it before but the open day or assessment day for Gulf was quite easy as f.ex. in Prague only 13 girls turned up and the first was an English test which the easiest I have ever done....honestly just read carefully and you cannot fail, then it was the group discussion, each group had her own coordinator (there were two ladies, one English and the other Irish) and we had to talk about who would you like to meet, whatīs your favourite meal, music etc....really easy.... donīt forget to tell a bit more and always from experience...that actually worked...but of course if you are a great actor, you make up something interesting...as long as you donīt say "I donīt know"...itīs fine. Then the ladies swapped the groups and everyone got a piece of paper with things like : describe yourself using one word....etc....it was about to be natural... or you had to tell something about the girl standing in front of you.... you cannot be rude or something like that....everything has to be polite but being natural is just the key.

Then it was the grooming test and actually that closed the gate to the most of the girls....as they didnīt pass the weighing or they had a visible scar, tattoo etc.

As you can see, it was the same everywhere...so, I think that anyone else interested in this case, please read through this thread and youīll find what you need to know about the AD for GF.

If you need to know other info about Gulf, go to their website as I have no idea where they are recruiting at the moment. But surely you can find a lot of places in Europe.

Good luck.:ok:

Guys, did you notice, the exchange rate for Bahreini Dinars to Euro has changed - if before 1 € was 0.58 BD, than now it is already 0.48, which means the salary is increasing for like 200-300 euros!! What do u think of that, what is the economical situation in Bahrein, do u think the exchange rate will remain that low?

ah, and, is it true there's gonna be some delay with visa arrangement? I heard so!

I have a few questions:

1. Do gulf air have swimming tests.
2. If they do have swimming test, do they allow you to go into the water with a life vest.
3. When you are in the pool swimming, what do you wear?

Vix85
24th October 2008, 08:38
You swim 50m unaided i.e. no lifejacket (we were told that this will definitely be tested) you wear swimsuit then wear trousers of some description eg leggings, tracksuit bottoms - you want to wear something that is light weight material, then a long sleeve top not revealing at all. Really trendy...not!

Hi Sonja,
I have a question for you. I have a good friend here in Spain and she was offered the position with Gulf Air. First they told here, that she will made 3000usd a month and than they changed it to total salary of 1700 euros. They also want her to pay 350 euros just to start the visa process, and of course, they did not tell her about it before. I used to be a flight attendant as well, but now I am working as a pilot. I am from Czech originally as well. But I have never seen such a bad contract in my life (very unprofessionaly made), no mention of the recruitment company in it. The also said, that the company may change allowance rates any time they feel like it. Do you have the same experience on your interview? Anybody else has the same experience of contract companies lying to people just to get them? May be Gulf air is ok, but the guys who represent them are bad. Anybody else had to pay 350 euros just to start the visa applications? thanks!

KANELA
24th November 2008, 16:00
i did interview in Barcelona and I had to pay 350€ whatīs the problem?? we pay that for burocracy instead of the company. the salary is 3000 dollars=1700 euros.

10 years ago, when I was a flight attendant, they were offerring in middle east about 4000 usd. But just to let you know, your exchange calculations are wrong.
3000usd=2328euro. 1700euro = 2191usd. So you guys are making much less. I am shocked, that they are able to find people. I am not saying this to put you down guys, I am just saying this, because something happened to the flight attendant jobs. It seems to be worse and worse. But of course, if it makes sense for you to go and work for such little money into middle east, it is your choice.

KANELA
24th November 2008, 18:36
yah maybe my calculations are wrong because i didnīt looked the currency conversor (soooooorrrrrrrrrrry!!! :)
but my reason to work as cabin crew in the middle east is just because i love flying, i only have 6 months experience (nothing) and i am looking forward to fly again. i worked for qatar airways and despite short time there i was so happy.
i like the culture and lifestyle and everything.
and even if they didnīt pay me anything i would fly for free for them

25th November 2008, 07:39
Hi guys, I have just found out, that the 350 euro's, the company here in Barcelona is taking for visas, is illegal. Gulf Air does not know anything about it and it is just going into their pockets. There is nothing written about it in the contract. One flight attendant contacted Gulf Air and the guys were surprised about it. This local hiring contractor told the girl, that she was stupid to ask them and they told her, that she is out. Sounds little bit like a mafia. The way to fight the 350 euro is to contact Gulf Air, but don't necessary give them your name, so that the local contracting mafia does not know, who has done it. Gulf air was upset about it and said, that they will contact them about it.
If somebody is willing to work for free or does not care about contracts, than the this business goes down the drain.

sonjasun
25th November 2008, 09:14
Hiya....well...I am actually a bit shocked:ouch: as well as they didnīt tell us anything about 350 euros payment for Visa processing....not at all. Thereīs nothing in my contract either....donīt know where the info came from but I suspect that noone would even thought about joining Gulf Air if you have to pay for that. Visa is their "problem" and not ours....sorry for being a bit upset but I donīt really get it. I havenīt paid for anything yet.

My visa is ready now but unfortunately I am ill, so unable to fly at the moment and if everything goes well for me, would be on my way to Bahrain just before the New Yearīs Eve.:)

The only thing that is a bit strange is that everybody got a Welcoming package before visa and they sent out a Security Clearance. I got something like that from the interview...hopefully.... but last week I had a phone call from the Recruitment Team Manager asking if I want to fly out.....nothing about the fee for Visa.

It is a bit surprising.:*

To the salary: It is the same salary you would get in Czech airlines I guess. And...you donīt have to pay for your accommodation, transport to the airport etc. What more do you want. And of course...this is not forever, you can stay just for a couple of years....save some money, which you cannot do in the Czech at the mmt....and then come back. I would take it as an experience and maybe a bit of adventure...why not!!! :ok:

KANELA
25th November 2008, 15:41
hi everyone, the famous 350€ is not for the payment of the visa, Gulf Air doesnīt charge anything. that money is for the agency or broker in this case i talk about my interview in spain. at the end of the interview gulf air told us we had to pay that money to the agency because they donīt work for free, obviously.
the point is airlines like emirates, etihad, qatar airways pay the agency.
at least in spain, gulf air it doesnīt, so candidates have to pay it.thatīs all!!!!!!!

Hi,
I am currently 17 hoping to aquire a job as cabin crew next year.
I just have a few questions.

1. The website says you have to be 20, but I have many friends that got the job when they were 18...and I asked many pilots as well as other employees and they told me 18 as well. So I was wondering what the age requirements are?
2. Do you have to have a college or universitty degree? and if not...do they count a G.E.D (general education degree) as a highschool qualification?

Thanks.

sonjasun
1st December 2008, 10:06
hiya....it all depends.

You have to be 20 if you wanna join the Gulf Air, I am not sure about the Emirates, but maybe even 21...but check their website. The British Airways, Air France, Spainair....probably 19. But also check the internet.

Usually the Middle East (ME) require more mature person, on the other hand the European airlines want a proven Customer service experience!!!! Also you have to match other requirements;)....at least when it comes to ME...definitely your height and weight is important and donīt get tattoos on your hands, legs and neck...or visible scars. But probably you know that. It varies from airlines to airlines.

The High School is okay. Donīt need a University degree or any kind of course. Just that you are able to learn and understand....and of course able to pass the interview!!!!!!:ok:

However sometimes they do require things like GCSC from Math at least level C!!!!! but not all the airlines, the ME donīt.

So, overall...you have plenty of time!!! Do not rush it, have a look on the internet and look for the airlines in your location or somewhere youīre planning to live.:O

Ahoj Soni,

congratulations!

I passed the Prague's assessment in July 2007, joined in October and like you, I also didn't want to listen to any rumours about Gulf Air and wanted to have my own experience. That time, they hired 3 as well and 2 of us are already back home.
I resigned this year in September and am happy to breath again.

There're some very nice people you're gonna meet but there's many of those who're going to make you feel miserable (I'm talking about other crew). Their aircraft is old with lots of technical issues so you're gonna experience some situations when not feeling safe at all.
And the funny smell is everywhere. Be prepared that most of Gulf Air passengers are illiterate labours from Asia who not only take shower but they also still haven't learned how to use toilet, flush etc....That was the biggest shock for me. The aircraft smells like urin when you board it very often. Be prepared for something disgusting experience.
I had traveled a lot even before I joined Gulf Air so I thought I would not experience a major cultural shock but I was wrong.

However, you have to make your own picture right now. There are about 10-15 czechoslovakians working there and all of them are great.
I'm sure you'll find eachothers because Gulf Air is just a huge gossip playground.

Your life will definitely become easy and comfortable. You're gonna love it if you are kind of a lazy person who only likes to party and don't want to be responsible. If you have some hobbies and love nature you're gonna cry. Bahrain is just a boring sandpit where people don't do much but eating, shopping and partying.

Good luck again!

Hello everyone,

I have spent the past 3 weeks applying for just about every airline company that has vacany. Through process of elimination it came down to the following (Ranked by preference):

Etihad Airlines
Emirates
Qatar Airways
Gulf Air
Royal Jordanian

Anywayz I wanted to know if there is anyone who can help me land a positions with one of these companies. My father referred me to a captian and the HR manager for Qatar Air but they told me to wait until after new year for recruitment session in the U.S.!!!! AGGHHHH!!!! This is sooooooo frustrating as I have been called to come to session but their all abroad and I just got back in the country from Egypt. If there's ANYONE who can help please send me a PM or reply.

Hi everyone,

I have few questions for Gulf Air.
How is Gulf Air actually?

They say FA can get air tickets for annual leave days but its just for annual leave to home? No free ID ticket anytime?

How is living in Bahrain?

Is the Salary almost same as Qatar Airways?

How many hours flying every month?

Two months training is a bit longer than other airlines. Why?? Is it so strict training?

I am working as cabin crew now and my current airline is so easy, comfortable enough but still looking for something new.

I hope someone who is working in Gulf Air would help and tell me.

Thank you very much !

Hello!

Yeah they weigh you at the interview. The day is broken up into 4 sections and the 3rd part is the groming, they check your height, weight, arms and legs for tattoos and scares and are constantly watching you through out the day!

I went to the London heathrow interview and I got the job, its very exciting! I have a small tattoo on my arm which needs to be removed and once its gone I'll be going to Bahrain! The contract is really good and Bahrain seems like an interesting place!

Are you going for an interview in the US?

;)Hi Janneha....well, I applied for that job in June and got it in September, so be patient...and look at their interviews on the website :

Flight Attendants - Gulf Air (http://www.gulfaircareers.com/careers/gulfair/FlightAttendants.aspx?PageID=16)

they would contact you if you live nearby these cities...otherwise, you will have to wait till they come to your town....anyway...if you are from the UK and you applied before X-mas, I am quite surprised that they didnīt invite you to for the interview in London...in January, I guess.

I can only advise you on being yourself, confident but modest as well...and in your case there is no language barrier:ok:...so, you might get it on that day as the others....so, check your weight (BMI-not more than 24!!!), your hands, arms and legs (down from your knees) -no visible scars or tattoos...they are so so sensitive about that...try to walk nicely - we had to perform a small "catwalk":O, wear make-up- also very important...nothing heavy - itīs not a party :-) but if you do get spots - cover it - otherwise they will ask you about your skin, īcoz you have to be prepared that in Bahrain is very hot. And put on something nice - nothing with cleavage, nothing really sexy....something smart like white blouse and black skirt or black trousers (I had trousers)...and high heels!!!!! If you donīt feel like all this.....you can do it yourself...this is just and advise!!!! BUT.....put on a SMILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

hello sonja!

Thanks so much for that advice:). Although i suppose it won't be of that much use if i dont get invited to the assessment days! My application status still says 'new'. They dont seem to have a lot of applications from the UK and apparently only a few people turn up at their interviews.

That's strange in my opinion since they have benefits more or less as good as the big boss ek. Ah well i'll see what happens with my application. I just want them to reply whether its in or out!!

I applied about a week ago and haven't heard back yet. I don't see a US interview session coming up, but there are not too many listed anyway. I am a bit worried about the weigh in, do they have a limit? Or is it just to track it for medical reasons? It is so funny how they can do that in an interview. In the states we aren't allowed to show photos on resumes or talk about weight, so its something new to get used too!

But anyway you can turn up in any interview, I guess, as noone checked our ID or wanted to see our invitation or something else...we got the "name" on our suits (blouse) and that was that....they didnīt know who we are or at least I think so, īcoz there was a girl who used to work for Etihad and they didnīt know or me...I was in England for two years and they were like...what did you do...it wasnīt just a question, the girl from Gulf really didnīt know anything...they didnīt have our application forms!!!!!!!!!!!! so, if you have money and time to fly to another place, donīt miss out...go for it!!!!!!!!!!!

to missfly:).....unfortunately, they donīt recruit in the States at the mmt...you will have to travel or wait!!! but donīt be so scared about the weighing....if you can walk in the plane corridor...you will be fine!!!!!!!what they do...they check your weigh and height to figure out your BMI...you can do it yourself at home...anything less than 24 is okay...but beware.....being under 18 would be a problem...as you wouldnīt be considered healthy!!!!!

It is for sure that Etihad is the LESS strict about the appearance than EK or GF...at least what I heard from my friends. Anyway...wish you luck....still....why not joining the US airways????? you love the Middle East????:ok:

Hi sonja,

thanks for that reply. I've just realized that i sent off the application in january and the assessment at london was late january. That might have been a reason. Still, its been a month and no reply. Do you think i need to call them just to double check or? I dont see any other assessments for the UK on their website anyway.

I should be concentrating on my etihad assessment next week really but its just because with gulf, its so much more straight forward compared to the others!!

Have you got their HR number ?? You can PM it to me if you wish. Also can i just say that thanks for all the help.

Cheers!!!:ok:

Does anyone know the discounts that family and friends of GA Cabin Crew receive? Also if my boyfriend came to visit, are you allowed to stay in the same hotel room if you are not married? (silly question I know!) or is it against the law in Bahrain? Thanks :)

Hi melanie - your parents are entitiled to unlimited reduced rate tickets at 10% of ticket price for a standby ticket or 50% of ticket price for a guarenteed seat, also 6 other people (friends or family) get one reduced rate ticket per year, but you could use those 6 tickets on one person if you know what I mean.

Hope that helps you :)

p.s. of course you can stay in hotels with your boyfriend lol :)

janneha - it took gulf over 3 months to get in touch with me after I applied! your best bet is to just keep checking when they are having there assessment days and turn up, think they just had one in manchester. I had 2days notice to travel to mine and was at the other end of the country lol :)

Good luck and keep searching!
I'll let you know if I hear of any coming up :ok:

Hi Dazed it took six months for me to get a reply from GF and that was an invitation to interview. Unless it has changed you will know when they are reviewingyour application because the status changes on the on line application. When you cannot get back onto it to make any changes they are looking at it. Watch the website, at the moment it's the normal vague stuff but when they announce actual venues for the interviews and your area appears you canexpect to be contacted it's a real waiting game with them.....why not try Qatar Airways they are actively recruiting at the moment? Good luck!

No, he won't be moving to Bahrain. Thanks for the tips, just one more question...there are some really bad things that have been said about Gulf on here, are any of them true? Have you had any bad experiences? x

Hello Anexa,

The position is based in the Kingdom of Bahrain which offers a friendly and cosmopolitan environment with fantastic recreational opportunities including numerous sports, water sports, sun bathing, luxurious shopping malls, international restaurants, and many other places for socialising.GULF1497 - Flight Attendant ? Eastern European Residents - Gulf Air (http://www.gulfaircareers.com/careers/gulfair/VacancyDetail.aspx?VacancyID=15593)

However it's obvious that as long as they don't have a base in your country, you will have to relocate.:)

some people love it and some hate it - dont judge until you get here then you can decide for yourself, i choose not to listen to other people as it brings you down! I'm sure you will have a great time but just stick out the training course as many girls leave and regret it, just think of the rewards at the end :ok:

You have to be at least 158cm tall (I think), they measure your height at the interview!

Emirates do the reach test. Gulf and Qatar actually measure your height and weight.

I've applied online and I currently reside in Bahrain. I'm VERY keen on joining Gulf Air... does anyone have an idea of when the next assessment days are?

You have to keep checking the website. They have just done a few assessment days during the last few months.

I have read on another forum here that the new hiring for GF has been stopped. I have passed the interview and for more than one month I am waiting to find out the starting date and still no response. I don`t know what to think.
Do any of you know sth about that?
All the best.

I worked for Gulf Air some years ago and enjoyed it mostly. There are always complaints of course, but I loved living in Bahrain, although I didn't altogether spend that much time there. They kept us on a busy schedule..!

The only thing that got me sometimes were the passengers. Especially on the likes of the Karachi (now Bombay?) turnarounds. They could be so rude!! However we always had good fun amongst ourselves and I made some life long friends. Would I do it again? Probably..., yes.

In my day, we didn't get paid during training. We were told to bring our own money for that period. We had free housing though and free local phone calls. Must admit I didn't save anything during my time there. Too many shopping opportunities (mainly abroad)... and pay wasn't brilliant.

With regard to someone in an earlier post saying you'd have to sleep with 'someone' to get anywhere, well, that has been known to happen, but I hardly think that is unique to Bahrain and/or GF. One of the girls in my training course, who wasn't necessarily the sharpest knife in the drawer, was put on an upgrade course way before any of the other girls in the same course. She did make the right 'connections'. However we all got there in the end.. :)

Go and try it for yourself and don't be afraid they'll keep you against your will. I've known girls who left during and right after the training and also after two or three months and none of them had a problem...

Only know of 1 girl who jumped ship when in LHR. All others went through the usual resignation routine.

Nothing to be scared of!

Anyone know if Suzanne (the Dutch woman) is still there in the CC centre?

gulf air has redundancies, they are not going to hire for a lot of time. They are facing a BIG crisis... so, no, not hiring.

Apparently they are taking on some newbies from the 'hold pool' in October. My guess is that they need more as they are flying to Iraq now. Not sure if they will be holding an assessment day anytime soon though, but you never know!

Your nationality is insignificant. My friend is Hungarian and she was hired in London. There was a Korean girl today in Bratislava, Slovakia at the Emirates open day who flew from England.

You might have to travel for a Recruitment Day. Check the homepage regularly for dates and places.

Hi, check their careers website. I believe they are only hiring Bahraini national flight attendants at the moment though.

I was offered a job in April 2009, but they cancelled my DOJ two weeks before I was due to fly out to Manama. :\

Now I'm waiting to hear back from Emirates!! :)
