Non type rated SIC as co-pilot

Hi all,

I've this scenario that I would like some clarification : -

Acft Type - Lear 60
Sic / co - pilot Citation Bravo

PIC is a fully rated pilot on lear 60, SIC is fully rated as such on the Citation B. He has no ratings whatsoever on the Lear 60. Can the SIC do a flight in the right seat in the lear minus any ratings 'just to operate' the radios. Is this legal? FYI..both are 'N' registered acft and both pilots FAA lic.

Are there any loopholes or waivers to this scenario ?

No, Im afraid not if the flight is to be conducted outside of US airspace. Your F/O will need at least an SIC type rating for the LR60 if the flight is outside of the US airspace structure (i.e. operating internationally) as per the FAR's.

If you, however were to be operating only within US domestic airspace then this would be legal.

You can search this on www.faa.gov.us (http://www.faa.gov.us) I think or read your latest FAR/AIM manual for verification.

I know this is now legal only in the US.

Think its in 61.55 but don't quote me on that.

Even though the SIC doesn't have to have a type rating inside the US, he still has to have some documentation somewhere that he got familiarized with the aircraft within a certain time etc...

And if he does the familiarization training, then he might as well fill out a 8710 and visit an examinar to get a free SIC type rating ;)
