I'm currently using MS Office 2003 Professional Edition with SP2.

There's probably an easy soultion to this, but bugger me if I can figure it out!

Each time I open, say an XL or Word file it runs a virus scan which can often take several minutes. It's nothing to do with my antivirus software but seems to be an MS Office function.

Any ideas on how I can turn it off?

Sorry to break the bad news but MS Office 2003 Pro SP2 does not come with an antivirus function !

As far as I'm aware ... none of the 2003 editions did, nor did any of the previous editions, nor does the 2007 edition ... and I would think it unlikely any of the future editions will either !

Any info on the "virus scan" dialogue or info screen to tell you what program is actually running this scan? Sounds a bit like a rogue antispyware application has found its way into your system.
A screenshot of it happening would be good.

Google? "office 2003+virus scan". You are not alone.

This (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919047/en-us?spid=2530&sid=63) looks to be a likely solution.

Your welcome.
Credit where credit's due, however. BOAC's post led me straight to that site.

Decrease your problems by loading : www: OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite (http://www.openoffice.org) Not only good (apparently) but also Free

OpenOffice is not good. It's VERY good. And yes, it's free.

Unless you have a specific requirement for Access and the exchange-based connectivity of Outlook, you are a fool if you spend money on Microsoft Office.

Uninstall Microsoft Office

Download and install Open Office.

Throw any CDs labelled "MS Office" into the bin.

Stop wasting our time with MS Office and virii :D

Hear, hear, to Open Office.

I dipped my toe in the water some time ago out of interest and am now one of the growing band of Very Happy Users. :ok:

Oh, just in case any one else using Norton has the same problem and can't fix it using the method above try this:

1. Start Norton AntiVirus (if Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.
2. Click options.
3. In the left pane, click miscellaneous.
4. In the right pane, under "How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected," uncheck Enable Office plug-in.
5. Click "OK"

Hi all

I hope I have resurrected the correct thread!

I have a new lappie (part of an AOL/Carphonewarehouse deal) and it has come with Microsoft Works which is the spawn of the devil!! It also has pre-installed (but not active) copies of Office 2007.

My questions are these.

1. will the files I have created in Works and Office 97 (old files I may transfer from my aged PC) be readable in Open Office?

2. How will I go about uninstalling Microsoft Works and the unregistered copies of the Microsoft 2007 "stuff" that has been put on the lappie?

I am marginally techie but have only ever been a computer user (albeit for the past 30 years!!).... I will only ever do exactly as I am told by an IT bod!!!

Help please!! I really want the functionality of Office on my lappie and equally want to keep it as clean of unnecessary files as possible. :ok:

Works is less useful than a sick headache: I'd remove it forthwith.

Office 2007 isn't as good as Office 2003 (says he, having helped a fair few folks swap back to 2003). You'd have to pay to activate the preinstalled copy, I assume.

Open Office (the free one) might do it for you, but there is a "changeover learning curve". Download it, allow yourself a couple of hours to tinker and see if it "works for you". If it does, be happy.

If it doesn't, I'd look on Ebay for a copy of Office 2003 (be sure it's a genuine one with the CoA and "unused" licence etc).

EDIT:

Sorry - missed the point of the Q:

Click "Start", click "Run" and in the little window that appears, type appwiz.cpl.
Wait for it to populate, then look for Works and Office 2007, and tell it to remove them.

Office 97 files can certainly be opened in Word 2002 (XP) and 2003. Not sure about Works.

If you are going down the ebay route to get Office 2003, you could also consider Office 2002, aka Office XP, which will give most of the functionality of 2003 but should cost less (I'm still using it quite happily). And check the MS website to see if your Office 97 license allows you to install an Upgrade version of either of the above (assuming you still have the CD!!).

want to keep it as clean of unnecessary files as possible

The best way to do that is a complete re-installation of the OS, deleting any existing partitions.

Of course, this can only be done with the appropriate OS installation disks, and license key.

Thanks Keef - sorry for not being clear!! With the advent of my parky bo11ox I find that in conversation (and now in typing!!) I seem to miss out key phrases but don't realise it!! How you actually worked out what I was asking I will put down to divine inspiration :E

I have now downloaded Open Office - tried opening files (ex Office and ex Works) and all are fine so... as I love learning how to use new systems I will go play for a while before uninstalling.

SaabDastard - thanks :ok:

To the best of my knowledge, OpenOffice can't read Word .docx files.

But pre-2007 versions of MS Word can't either without an add-in.

IMO, people IMO, should avoid writing .docx files for at least the near future.

It's standard Microsoft technique! They have been happy with the .doc format for probably 20 years. Now they have to change it to .docx merely to force people to buy their latest office software and also stop them using the free and excellent Open Office. I sincerely hope that an addon to enable open office to handle .docx files will appear before long. Of course, those who have actually shelled out for Office 7 or are still using their trial versions insist on using the .docx format to show off! It is quite simple to make Office 7 to write .doc files as I discovered on my free sample before I deleted it and replaced it with my usual Office XP suite. Email attachments in .docx format I receive now are returned to sender, requesting them to be re-sent in an acceptable format!

OpenOffice 3 supports docx files. odf-converter-integrator sometimes does a better job of conversion, though.
