View Full Version : Who's crewing Singapore's Airline's new 777s?

I believe SIA have not yet allocated the crews for the 12 upcoming 777s. The problem seems to be that they simply don't have the crews available - full stop!
SIA have certainly been having trouble over the last few years getting crews despite the full page adverts in Flight International. With losing 30 Captains to Korean and the high under experience level in their local FO ranks, it would certainly seem like a crunch is coming.
Even Len's Lears can't spit out the sectors in time. They could possibly partition a compliant CAAS to lower the minimum sector requirements yet again.
If only they hadn't treated their foreign national FOs and expat FOs so badly.
Looks like they will have to lift the remuneration level to get enough foreign crews. ALPA-S will demand equal rights to pay increase, and at the end of the day, the likes of us will have bettered the conditions for those we left behind.
Kind of ironic, isn't it??

Titan I think SIA does not carry their own insurance. At least not in the case of SilkAir.

TITAN I simply cannot let you get away with this one!
1. At the last count there were three resignation letters sitting in the office, about 24 guys did, however, go to the interviews so more may follow.
2. Insurance - very few airlines can afford to carry their own passenger legal liability and third party insurance, the policy limits run into the billions. SQ may, perhaps, cover some of it's own hull insurance but the bulk of the cover, all types, goes via the Singapore Insurance company to the London and other, smaller European markets where it is re-insured. The holding broker is Willis Caroon I think you will find. Possibly about 1% retained in Singapore and all underwriting decisions made in London/Zurich/Frankfurt etc.

I understoodn that SIA organised its own insurance with the re-insurance industry directly. Anyway, Ive edited that out of the posting until I can check it further.
So, what about the pilot shortage? Where are the 777 crews going to come from?
Is Korean offering foreign basings? That would be the clincher.

Titan,
There's a rumour that Kal has been asked, more like pleaded by Mas flight Ops to stop taking Malaysian pilots. If that is the case then,no doubt Sq will be doing the same thing or else nada 777 crews for shiny new planes. As far as foreign basings for Kal I believe there only for US and/or Australia.

I think,therefore I am,I think.
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

titan, you sound genuinely concerned about the welfare of SIA,welcome back to the fray!
Now all you have to do is stop making up stories and get a pilot's licence and we may restore your "club" status again.

Post by proxy.
Looks like SQ is going to be short of crew next year with retirements, resignations and new a/c arrivals ( 15 B777 !!! ). There are
rumours that about 30 guys ( capt. and fo )are leaving for other companies and
even Local Capts. are talking about KAL; there seems to be a lot of discontent
because of pay / CPF and the fact that the CA is long overdue; with little
increase in benefit/renummeration but with more being asked by Management, the
crew are getting millitant - believe it or not!! One local Capt. ,quite senior,
has already left for XXX. Local FO's are looking into prospects in XXX - maybe the blinkers are opening orat least the locals are developing some form of genitalia!! One
A newly promoted Captain on B777 did the sums, concluded that even with increments / projected bonus, it would take him 13 years in SQ ! to earn what it would take 5 years to earn in KAL and still work less / be based overseas ! He even says it would be worth to pay the $45000 bond. I know KAL is a big risk but it certainly is making a lot of people do some questioning /thinking.
