Hi everyone,
Anyone can give me some suggestion for where to have PPL flight training (FAA) in Asia? I want to have my training in Asia instead of going to States. In fact, I come from Hong Kong. But Hong Kong's training is base on CAA. Also, I have to queue up for at least a year for having training (may be once a month). Please let me know if you have any further information like cost and location. Thanks a lot.
Regards
Alkit

Thai Flying Club would be happy to help you out. Their homepage is http://www.thaiflyingclub.com where you can find their contact details.
Chiang Mai flying club in northern Thailand are slightly cheaper, but operate ancient C-150 and C-152's @ 2700 baht/hr (solo). You can e-mail them at
[email protected] or phone 66-1-9520 141.
The Chiang Mai flying club PR brochure claims that training done there is valid for use in any other country.

First, thank you Smiling Monkey and Herman for your helpful information. I have recorded them down for reference. I will write them email for further information request. I am going to have the flight training by Janary of 2002. I still not decide where to go. Thai and Malay also sounds a good place. But I am still looking for Singapore and Taiwan's information.
Best regards,
Alkit

Hi again,
To do your PPL in Singapore is BLOODY expensive. S$19,000 ! It is a restricted PPL, no Cross country ! If you want, PAY MORE !!
In short, it is not worth it !
Check out this websites:
Singapore Airlines Flying Club http://www.sia-flying-club.org/
Republic of Singapore Flying Club http://homer.pacific.net.sg/~sinflyingclub/
Hope that helps.
I definitely recommend flying in other countries ! Australia, New Zealand or Malaysia.
All the Very Best, alkit !

Hi Hermie,
Thanks for your information about Singapore's flying. You are so right to comment on the high flying fee in Sing. The price is similar in Hong Kong. I have though of going to Aussie. But I wonder if any FAA instructor over there who can log me some FAA agreed hours. As my goal of the coming trip is not getting the license, but getting more real flying experience (also log more hours as many as possible). Do you know any flying school which is located right next or in the international airport? Sure i am talking about in Southeast Asia. I don't want to go some remote and unfamilar places alone. That's why i always ask for information about flying near metro.
Thanks
Alkit

alkit,
I think MFA would be your kind of choice since as said in its website ;
The Malaysian Flying Academy is situated immediately adjacent to the Batu Berendam Airport in the historical, coastal and tourist city-state of Malacca. It is slightly less than a leisurely hour's drive from the state of the art Kuala Lumpur International Airport and slightly more than a leisurely hour's drive from Kuala Lumpur via Malaysia's superhighways.
Regarding the cost per hour I have it with me, but I must look for it.
Hope this helps, alkit !
Once again, All the Best !

Hi Alkit,
I'd suggest coming over to australia if you want to log some time. Perth'd be a good choice as its GA airport (Jandakot) is located quite near Perth International, plenty of opportunity to fly through CTR airspace. Wide expanse of land and beautiful weather also make this a good choice. Relatively cheap training costs compared to other places too.
If you REALLY want to find a GA airport near an Int'l, try SIngapore :) the GA strip is SOOO near Changi International.
With regards to logging FAA hours in Oz, that might be tricky. You'd probably have to contact the flying schools/ charter outfits to ascertain how your hours are to be logged. You might even have to check with CASA (the Civil Aviation Safety Authority here). In Singapore, you probably won't get a chance to fly solo unless you have a Singapore CAAS PPL or convert to one. When I was there, I had to fly dual with a club instructor, which didn't help in the expenses department!
Try contacting the different countries' aviation authorities. It might be more worthwhile. Good luck.

Thanks Herman and Combi,
Now my eyes is on Malaysia and Australia. Both sounds good to me. Well, I should send some emails for further request on the FAA hours questions. Combi, would you give me few names for the flying school in Aussie? No matter Perth, Sydney or Melbourne (any good places for flying). Let me see if my friends there can help. Anyway, thanks a lot for you guys answer. Big thanks.
Alkit
Are you both PPL holders too? or even more senior?

Alkit,
If you had the choice btn Aussie and Thailand, well I'd choose Aussie. I have flown in both countries and I just feel a little bit safer in Aussie. The flying in northern Thailand, however, is great and it's possible to do an International private flight to Laos.
The aicraft hire costs in Aussie is cheaper .. A decently equipped C-172 is around AUD $140 per hour (solo).
The downside to flying in Aussie are the additional airways and landing charges (about $35 AUD to fly to Melb Intl in a C-172 from the GA airport). Compare this with landing at Chiang Mai Intl (only a 150 baht fee..about $7 AUD).
Regarding "FAA" hours ...I'm not quite sure what you mean here. Do you wish to be credited flying hours done in Aussie to an FAA issued licence? PPL license conversions are usually easily done, (unlike CPL).

You could also consider the Philippines. Clark Field 2 hrs north of Manila has Omni Aviation who run 150 & 172s off the strip next to Clark Intl airport (low traffic). Or there are several flying schools (Link International is one)at Manila International. Costs are approx USD 8k for PPL and they are the most likely to be FAA standard seeing as the Americans only left 12 years ago (and the local all speak the language!) Hiring rate is about USD75/hour I believe... and its only 90 minutes from HK by airliner

Hi ^_^ monkey and bludger, Aussie obviously is a safer choice. At least, I know how to speak English (non-native). Actually, I guess I will finally fly in all those countries we mentioned here. That's what I hope. At this moment, I concern personal safety and total cost the most. AUD$140 is half of Hong Kong's price. Attractive!!
Well, about flying in Thailand and Philippine, I must go there one day. I guess the scenery there must be great.

Alkit,
Check your email :)
I agree with smiling monkey on the cost of landing fees in Oz. Costs a bloody fortune when you add them up. I know landing fees at the Singapore GA airport only costs 2 bucks!

Additional info to the above, the club is operating in the city of Kuala Lumpur at an airfield called Sempang (WMKF). You may find the details about the airfields (WMSA and WMKF) from Jeppersen or AIPs.
