Thank you VS-LHRCSA for your reply; sorry it's taken me a little while to get back to you! Once again, thank you and a Merry Christmas!:)

Can someone please give an example roster of a month of long haul ...

how many times do you fly each week? I have been offered a job with Qantas working 4 days on, 3 days off, but they only fly to Bangkok, Hong Kong and Sinagpore ... thinking about whether to apply to BA now, or do Qantas and then after a year or so, apply ... Thanks.

VS-LHRCSA
23rd December 2007, 15:40
There is no typical monthly roster as such. Trips range from 3 - 9 days with 2-4 MBTs after, depending on the amount of time zones crossed and local nights rest achieved. etc.

Trips to BKK and SIN are 9 days, as you continue on to SYD on both.

BA are recruiting for WW at LHR on 11 temporary contracts. Chances of being kept on within BA are debateable, virtually zero on WW. Whether or not they will recruit again in a year is anyone's guess.

If you were to turn down QF to do BA, I would be willing to bet that QF would not offer you even an interview after your 11 month contract at BA is up. If you are close to the 900 hour limit (which has been suggested) you not be able to be employed as crew for anyone for a couple of months. This would need to be confirmed though, I'm just speculating.

Happy Christmas to all PPRuNe Members, for all the help you give everyone who needs (despite the fact that we don't even know each other)! Happy Xmas especially to those still waiting for courses with BA, and also for those who'll be applying or who have applied for the 11-month temp position like me.

All the very best,

Avoid SFG and wait if you can for LHR EF.

Good luck to anyone thinking of joining BA SFG,you will need it!!.Money, contract and management are dire.AVOID.

They can't get crew fast enough...ask yourself why?.Because so many are leaving!!.

Your choice.

Hi

Hope you all had a lovely Xmas:pI was just wondering if anyone is aware of anyone who has been kept on after there 11month contract with BA and if there is even a slight possiblity that you could be kept on. Or if you were not kept on the WW would there be a chance you could be moved somewhere else or would you have to go through the whole application process again?:}

nuigini
27th December 2007, 19:09
You never know. It could be LGW SF or LHR EF. Doubt very much it would be LHR WW as both the unions and many crew would not tolerate that. Many people say they will be given LGW SF but they did that last year and there were a few issues. My bet is LHR EF!

VS-LHRCSA
27th December 2007, 19:12
Officially, there is no chance of being kept on after the 11 months.

The last intake of temporary crew did a 6 month contract and were then offered LGW. So it could happen again but it is not guaranteed. A few of the ex-WW crew that went to LGW were quite vocal about the differences so therefore LGW management are voicing concern about taking ex-WW crew again. However, going by the recent crew shortages, they may not have choice. There is the 900 hour rule that may effect employability, which may be another reason why there are no guarantees.

It is highly doubtful that the current intake of WW temps will be kept on at WW. They would need to clear the hundreds of existing crew on transfer lists before that would happen. If there are vacanies at EF, there is no reason that they wouldn't be offered places there but again, transfer lists will need to be honoured first.

nuigini
27th December 2007, 20:51
Or, they could either keep on recruiting for LGW or improve the conditions. I highly doubt, if the temps were transfered there, would last any longer than those recruited straight into LGW! They would be silly to think otherwise!

Seeing they are recruiting again for LHR WW, they must have something in mind!

HZ123
28th December 2007, 10:29
Recruitment; also acknowledge that 11 month contracts give CC management the chance to get shot of staff that are not wanted. One of there concerns (they told me this); the quality of many new entrants is below that which they would like and this is reflected in comments made by the passengers, the position often does not attract the candidates that are commited to customer service. Additionally there is a lack of languages, which has lead to encouraging mainland Europeans to join who usually have a couple of speaks and require less criminal records checks. Some of you may agree with these comments but some may feel offended. It does not help with the dilution of t & c. Whatever, the CC role will become even more difficult as costs will need to be further cut and this will see cuts in on board services. For all of you there will be 7000+ recruited by 2011 / 2012 and this recruitment and courses will commence round about September 2008 and will continue without a break. To meet this goal BA are taking on Contract trainers to fulfill the number of training courses that will be needed.

Hallo,

Could you share your opinions and experience regarding working as Cabin crew on these two fleets?

I guess the pay is higher on WW and also it is not necessary to live near LHR, whether at EF it's easier to have a social life etc.
I know the preference is up to the individual circumstances..however it would be nice to get your opinions.

I am not sure if I had to post here or on BA cabin crew discussions.
Thanks to all

Hi Shuchim

If you go onto the website www.britishairwaysjobs.com (http://www.britishairwaysjobs.com) and search vacancies, you will find any and all positions for which recruitment is taking place. It's best if you keep checking on the website. You can also ask to receive an email alert every time a job with the key words you want comes up.

Good luck!

VS-LHRCSA
28th December 2007, 18:54
Pollymagou, it is very much up to the individual. WW generally pays more purely because you are away more. That said, you are paid allowances in local currency. On EF a lot of your allowances are in Euros. A lot of WW allowances are paid in US Dollars - not so great at the moment.

On EF, you have control of your life due to preferential bidding. If you want to, you can be home every night. On WW you get to travel but then there is jetlag to consider. Also for every favoured destination (eg SFO), there are the more "challenging" trips (LOS, ISB, TLV) which can be very draining.

One thing to remember is that there is the ability to request to transfer between either fleet after two years. It may take a while to come through but ultimately, you have the chance to try each fleet over a number of years and see what works better for you and your circumstances at the time.

pollymagou

Are there more people wanting to transfer from LHR EF to LHR WW or viceversa? On average how much higher are the wages at WW ?

Does anyone know when the recruitment staff work? I'm desperately waiting to hear back from BA about my application, but what with it being Xmas I don't know when they will be in. Do you think it would be safe to assume I may not hear anything until Wednesday now?

Also, if the interview days they offer you aren't suitable...can you phone them and ask them if there are any other dates available when you could go to the interview? I already work as cabin crew and so could only really attend on a day off...

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Hello,

Can anyone give an insight into how much you can make per month after tax on WW 11 month temp contract?

And do preferential bidding systems apply to WW 11 month temp contract as well?

Thanks

Don't know about take home pay but the only fleets that have bidding systems are LHR EF and LGW.

Happy New Year!!!!!!!!

30th December 2007, 23:00
Spoon82, Happy New year to you too. You better ring for your uniform fitting as soon as possible and book an appointment. They get very busy! And do send for yr medical asap too.
Re references, they won't contact them without your permission. So you will be informed first. I suppose that will happen some time in January.
And re the cd-rom you should get that I think at least 3 weeks before starting but if you have not you need to contact them.
Re the Criminal record I dont know re for someone from abroad. You better check with them. It could be the same procedure as explained in the confirmation email's attachments. I gather you have received that already?

Happy New Year to you all!!
Could someone tell me how many bags LHR EF crew are allowed on board? I gather you cannot check in any luggage in the hold and only on board luggage allowed? If so, I like to know the number and also the size. As there is the xmas sale, I might get them now. Thanks.

Spoon82, as far as I can remember, when I got the phone call and given all info on the phone, I was told that if your references need updating, you have to do that yourself by logging in. Otherwise they will go along with what you provided them with in the first place.
And re medical, there's no appointment to be made. You just need to print off the attachment and fill it in and sign and send it off. I have been told that they will only contact you and/or yr GP if they feel there is a need to do so.
Happy New Year!

sweetmissy and CW84 - what date did you guys apply?

essjay7
2nd January 2008, 09:31
Good morning everyone, happy New Year!
I wonder if someone can enlighten me! Please can someone explain the set-up at Gatwick?
My sister worked for BA in the late 70s and 80s. She worked in what was then called longhaul at LHR and can remember BA starting to operate flights to the Caribbean from LGW, crewed by LHR staff. If I remember correctly, BA had taken over the ailing Dan-Air routes. I presume they took on the Dan-Air staff, and kept to their working conditions, pay, etc., What I don't understand is that why, over the years, BA staff at LGW weren't slowly integrated into the same BA package enjoyed by their fellow workers at LHR. I can understand retaining the status quo at the beginning, but surely over the subsequent years, as crew retire or move on, there wasn't a date when all BA crew there became part of the BA family completely.
Obviously this wouldn't have happened overnight, but like most companies who change their pay structure, there should have been a date sometime down the line when all new entrants commence on the same pay/conditions as their LHR counterparts. From reading these forums, I understand that this is not so.................why???
Why didn't the union, in their negotiations, work for this? I'm not naive to think that this could have happened overnight, but we're talking decades now and something should have been sorted out. I just don't understand why this hasn't been a priority. Or am I missing something? Obviously it would have taken some years for everyone to be on the same package, but eventually, this would have happened.
Sorry if this has been answered before; most grateful for any responses!
Thank you, one and all and a Happy New Year again!

simon773
2nd January 2008, 10:39
with regards to the differences in pay structure among cabin crew in BA, this is a very articulate subject, not only there are differences between the two main BA bases i.e. LGW and LHR, but also among cabin crew belonging to the same one; but cabin crew in both LHR and LGW are mainline with a BA Plc contract.

When BA bought Dan-Air in 1991 (for £1) Barbara Cassani stressed in no uncertain terms that although rebranded BA (known as European Operations Gatwick - EOG, or EuroGatwick), the short haul operation would remain a subsidiary. If Dan-Air couldn't make money, BA certainly wouldn't, with the higher costs of the mainline terms and conditions.

This was very different to the integration of British Caledonian and British Airtours, whose crew were merged into existing BA crew seniority lists, with terms and conditions honoured.

EuroGatwick has made some headway over the years in becoming more "mainline" if you will. They were merged with BA Cityflyer in 2003(?) to become EuroFleet LGW. In 2006, the existing mainline WW fleet at LGW was disbanded, with most crew being sent to LHR. The long haul routes were then given to EuroFleet LGW to operate and thus became Single Fleet LGW. They have since become part of the NSP which means that there will be a proper system for transfer to other fleets in the coming years.

My belief that this has not happened sooner as that the company has had no legal obligation to integrate what was Dan-Air into mainline. The agreement was ratified in 1991 after the acquisition by the company and the unions. A contract is a contract and pressure from unions can't really change that unless the company agree to it after looking at other considerations, like crew morale. Like I said, this is my belief and I am open to correction on this.

Hey guys! Well done CW84 on your good news!! I, too, had some good news today and have also been offered an interview! I applied on the 22nd December...

However, the dates of the interviews I can't make! I am already cabin crew and working all 3 of those days, how typical! I have booked a slot for 9th Jan and am desperately trying to swap the flight, so will just have to wait and see! I did phone them up though and they said that if I couldn't make the date I booked then it wouldn't be a problem rescheduling it, when they announce new dates for interviews. But they won't be doing that until the current dates are full.

Good luck for your interview!! x

Hey!
I also got offered an interview yesterday! But it's for next week! I have school and I can't get cheap flights to Heathrow... I have flights to Luton on easyjet for about 150 euros which is OK... I emailed them and told them this was too soon, I was so grateful they invited me and I really wanna go. They reassured me that I can wait till new dates come up but that they can't promise anything... But I just saw they've extended the deadline for the same position, this time until Jan 20th, so maybe I'll be able to go with that batch of applicants to their interviews? Because I have a week of holidays in the beginning of February... I don't know what to do now, should I book for next week today or wait till new dates come up...? I really want this, really bad.

Good luck to everyone else who applied, keep in touch please!
all the best,

I have been told that you need to go fairly smart to your training so I am going to wear my suit you do get your uniform on the first day of your course and think that you start to wear it in about the 3rd wk of training apparantly.

Training is usually 5-6 weeks, Monday to Friday, depending how much they want to fit into the training plus trainer and classroom availability. This is not absolutely set in stone however. They have the right to ask you to come in over the weekends if the operation requires it.

As WW crew, you have very little control of your roster. You have a limited number of trip requests you can submit and you can also ask two UK request days per month, ie: days you will be guaranteed to be in the UK. Of course, a standby block or roster disruption can blow these out of the water.

Jay solo,

As VS-LHRCSA says, training is usually Monday through Friday (anything between 08:00 to 16:00 and 10:00 to 18:00). I'm on one of the courses that began in December and classes are also taking place in the weekends because of Christmas and New Year. Training is according to my schedule 25 days.

From what I have been told you cannot request for any trips during the first twelve months. Although, one of our trainers said they might make an exception as the temporary contract is only eleven months (but don't hope too much!).

He would prefer to be based at Heathrow because of where he is living, but is thrilled to be joining BA, period. Could anyone let me know with regards to the basic disclosure application when should we do it ?? My course begins 10.03.08 and wondered when I should send the basic disclosure app and pay the £20.

Thanks in advance for the info !!

Get it done now. They will be taking up your references soon and will need it all done before you start training. The disclosure form takes around 3 weeks on average.

Have you heard this!
5th January 2008, 20:40
Disclosures takes a matter of days now to get back. You will get it back within a week of sending it. It's not like it used to be at the beginning.

Annaspanner, you should have been told about that when they rang you to offer you the course date. You should not do it now but do it a month exactly before you start, that is on the 10th of February. Everything is explained in the attachments with the confirmation email. If you do it now, which you can, you might be asked to do it again and pay another £20 as the first one won't be valid anymore.

VS-LHRCSA
6th January 2008, 02:55
Bearing in mind you are from France, you need to allow some extra time for the disclosure. Turnaround time depends on the circumstances and from an admin point of view it can take an average of around 3 weeks as I said earlier. For someone who is young and has always lived at home, in the UK, then the facts are easier for DS to verify. It may not be the case for everybody who applies to BA.

Everyone's situation is different and you really do need to speak to resourcing about this. If you are starting in 2 months, then they would be getting this started quite soon. A lot will depend on whether or not you have given notice at your current employer. You also have to factor in the likelihood of any delays in your references, any gaps that need covering, etc. Remember, they will not take up gap references until ALL of your employment and academic references are taken. The whole process needs to be timed so that all work/study references get to BA around the same time as your disclosure. Then your gaps are done, then it's off to Vanguard House for processing.

I have only one referee as I have been in my present job since I started working..10 years ago. When they rang me to offer me the course date, the lady told me to apply for the CRC only a month before starting and not before as it would be too early. I am not sure re people from outside the UK but I believe I should do what they have told me especially I do not want to pay £20 twice. I have read some people did theirs early and they had to re-apply and pay again.

SD83

Well I have decided to do one now as I live abroad as I can imagine it will not be so straight forward. If it does come back in a week or so and therfore is not valid when I start my course then I will just have to pay again at the 4 week mark! I just dont want to risk leaving it till 4 weeks before and not getting it on time if there are any complications!! It would be just my luck !!

Regarding CRC (Criminal Record Check). Don't do it too soon as there is an expiration date. I think it's two months! Several people on my course have been asked to do it again as it expired before they were able to issue identification passes to them! I would advise you to wait until a month and a half before your training begins. That should be efficent time enough!

References are required of the past five years.

Folks,

This forum is intended for working Cabin Crew: Some time ago it was nearly over run with wannabees, and for that reason the wannabee threads were established to be a source of information for those seeking recruitment. It would seem that the wannabee threads are now being used for a sort of social networking function instead.

You need to be very clear on this - If your post does not contain concrete fact about the recruitment then it has no business on PPRuNe - anywhere: This means that any of the following stuff is not to be posted...

Facebooks, blogs, I'm so happy for you, woohoo I got it, wish me luck, send me a PM, msn me, will you be at the interview, follow your dreams etc. etc. All of this should be done by PM on PPRuNe (if you must - we'd rather that you didn't use our server space for it) or by Text Message - in fact do it anyway that you want - BUT DON'T POST IT ON A THREAD.

If you go back a few pages in the BA threads, there is a lot of talk there about what is going to happen after the 11 months. It's a difficult call to make really. Prepare to be let go, so that if you're offered anything after 11 months, it will be a bonus. Don't forget, you could always do another temporary contract if they're offered in the future.

skywatch77
13th January 2008, 19:58
Can someone please tell me whether it is true that BA won't let you start until all references are in? I have quite a few from when I was studying years ago and also when temping and casual work etc??

have previously worked for two airlines and they had no problems getting my references etc but I was allowed to do the training whilst they sorted my references out.

I'm not worried about the last two years because I have been in the same job but I am worried about the previous 3 years and hearing about how disorganised BA are, I hope they get my references in time. I will personally chase them up myself if I have to.

VS-LHRCSA
13th January 2008, 20:10
They have just outsourced the referencing, so hopefully that will take some of the pressure off recruitment staff and help get things speeded up for new applicants.

Technically, you're not supposed to start training before you get your references sorted out. I know some who have but in a lot of ways, it is better for everyone to not start until they are done. If you were to start training and your ID is not ready when you finish training, you will have to sit at home on basic while waiting for your ID - not ideal on a 11 month contract.

If you wait until your references are done, you can do your training and go straight online and maximise your earnings for the 11 months. I know it means waiting but at least you can stay in current job, earning your current pay, which surely has to be more than cabin crew basic.

I looked in the uniform booklet the staff receive (I know someone who works for BA already) and it says up to 25kg but no dimensions are given that are specific to either Eurofleet or WW. I have brought a 73cm length tall one as I will be away for longer on longhaul flights. Think thats not really huge but big enough !! I did ask the uniform woman on the phone and she said that we have the same size as pax and the size I have seems ok. Maybe someone else can clarify further for you as I am on LHR WW Anna XX

Still again, BA puts a lot of money into recruitment and training so I highly doubt they will let go of those temporary crew recruited for 11 months. They will either get LHR or LGW (LGW I doubt as the transfer from WW to SF in 2006 was not too successful).

I also know of several people who have started training but not had their references completed. If it's for the 11 months contract, you would be better off (as previously mentioned) if you did have it sorted out before you start training!

Doors_to_Automatic
15th January 2008, 19:30
Basically on WW you will be checking in a suitcase into the hold and you will need a smaller bag for the cabin to keep cabin shoes, gilet, paperwork and anything else you may need onboard.

On LHR EF I beleive there isn't the option of checking in a bag (correct me if I am wrong) so you will need to get a wheelie bag that will fit into an overhead locker. I'm sure that you may be able to find dimensions on BA.com.

At LGW SF you will always check in a bag on shorthaul or longhaul unless you have no liquids over the 100ml rule and they all fit into a clear sealable bag (a bit difficult with some girls make up) and this I'm sure applies at LHR. You will again need a cabin bag for onboard.

It really has been covered in other threads but basically, there is no typical month. In a month you may do a 9 day BKK/SYD, a 3 day SEA, a 5 day JNB, etc. The combinations are endless.

The only thing you can count on are back-to-back trips which come along every 28 days. These are two trips together, with a night spent at LHR, eg:

1 LHR-JFK, layover
2 dep JFK, night flight
3 arr LHR, layover at LHR
3 LHR-JFK, layover
4 dep JFK, night flight
6 arr LHR, clear
7 off
8 off
9 off

Personally, I hated them and was taken off for medical reasons. I worked best on 4 day trips that left on a Monday, that way you got the weekend off.

Trip lengths vary from 3 days to 9 days, layover length depends on flight times and frequency of the service. The shortest is 18 hours. Days off after depend on trip length and time zones crossed, the minimum is two.

Every now and then, a short-haul trip may be operated by WW crew, eg: Lisbon for football on the 747. This would be a day trip and you would get the next day off because of the T&Cs. Doesn't happed very often and I managed to avoid it.

any existing BA crew that could tell me how "do-able" you reckon it is to work from London and live in another european country and commute to london for duties?

VS-LHRCSA
16th January 2008, 18:30
Well, I did it from the states, so europe should be a doddle.

Around 30% of crew commute. You need to do it from somewhere were the flights are easy to get on with a staff travel ticket and low seniority. Places like BCN and NCE can be tricky if you are new but if you plan ahead and check your loads, you can do it.

You won't have staff travel for the first six months, so you will need to consider that. You also have to factor in standby duties which you may have to do from home, or in a commuter's case, from a B&B or a friends house.

Commuting is only really possible on WW LHR. You can do it at LGW but you are at the mercy of how successful your bidding is. EF LHR, is also tricky for commuting. People do it but again, you are relying on good bidding.

ok this is what i sent as a reply to some one in your position but they were scared with the maths tests etc.

"I didnt have to do anything like that for mine, i was completely suprised!
I went in the morning and got measured etc then we got seperated into groups of like 5 or 6 then my group went into this room and we sat around a table. One by one we had about a minute to say some things about ourself, like 'hi my names kelly im from devon, and i said i have just bought 4 new tropical fish'. Thought that would be easier for ppl to remember! ha. listen carefully if you have anything like that, as i was tested on what every ones names were! Then we had 20 mins to discuss about some holiday senarios and put things into order with a budget. But what their looking for more than completing the task, is for communication, were ur able to take it in turns talking, puting your point across without over powering the group. Then we had a little talk all together with the other groups. THEN i was shocked to hear my name being called out. It was my interview!! That lasted about 45 mins and i was asked lots of questions where i had to tell them about a time i delivered excellent customer service etc. just make sure you practice every senario you can think of. I was practicing the whole day before with a friend and even before leavin for the interview. This really helped. so glad i practiced!

Generally speaking, the class times can be set by the trainers after consulting with preferences of the trainees BUT this will need to be done with every class and can't always be guaranteed.

You will have trainers for:

Customer Service
Avmed
SEP

They will all have differing styles and may not want to, or be able to accommodate changes to the schedule, especially with training rigs which are in demand all day long.

I'm not sure if flying in on a Monday morning is the best option. You will need to allow a good half and hour AT LEAST to get from T1 or T4 to Cranebank. If your flight is late (being LHR there is every chance it could be) then you may be stuck. Remember, this is your training and there are demerits issued for lateness.

At EF, if you were to commute, you have the same issues that you would have at LGW, so with that in mind, you may as well take EF if it's being offered. Both fleets have bidding, so you have input into your roster but there will be times where you have to stay somewhere local, eg: standby or there-and-backs. If you were to join EF now, you would be ahead of the game when it comes to transferring to WW which is very well set up for commuting.

Thanks for your advice! From what I've read LHR seems to be slightly better for t & c anyway. If you have any idea of average pay it would help me make a final decision as I get paid quite well now but work extremely hard for it!

There's just about every type of social activity available within BA clubs. You say it there's a section for it! It used to be that if you were attending an inter-airline competition BA would supply free tickets to attend. I went to a tennis competition in Florida once with it last time I worked at BA. Not sure if it still applies.

You will get access details to the intranet when you join. Gives access to staff tickets, hotlines, rosters etc etc.

Hope this helps

Kellymarie, yes you may join the ba clubs once you start I believe. And we can't have access to ba intranet yet as we will need our staff id number in order to do so. I believe all will be sorted out during the training.

Hi,

I have recently been offered the chance to have an assessment for LHR EF if I don't want to wait for LGW vacancies in a couple of months' time. When I asked by e-mail if the EF position was a permanent position or on a temporary contract, I was told that it was temporary only.

As I'm looking for a permanent job, I didn't ask how long the temp contract was for, but hope this helps with deciding which position to be assessed for.

Cheers!

VS-LHRCSA
23rd January 2008, 11:56
That is really strange, as nothing has been mentioned internally - at least as far as I know - about temps at EF. I know they've been offering interviews to those waiting for LGW but I didn't realise they were for temp positions.

There's nothing on the job websites, internal and external, either. They must have something up their sleeves.

Have you heard this!
23rd January 2008, 12:22
What is it with all these temporary contracts? I can't see BA finishing you at the end of it but does anyone have any thought as to where they will send you at the end or will they just keep you where you are?

VS-LHRCSA
23rd January 2008, 13:47
This has been covered a lot already in previous posts. This is really unchartered water for BA. Just because they kept on temps in the past does not mean they will do it this time. There are a lot more factors now (eg: possible strike action, 900 hours, LGW joining NSP, etc).

If you were to do a temp EF contract, they could keep you on or send you to LGW, depending on where the vacancies are. If there are no vacancies, or you have run up your 900 hours, then they will not keep you on.

If you do a temp WW contract the same applies. The only way that you will be kept on at WW is if there are vacancies. These vacancies must be offered to the 100s of people on the transfer lists, so this will be highly unlikely - not impossible - but unlikely.

Have you heard this!
23rd January 2008, 14:41
VS-LHRCSA

Thank's for that. It may have been covered before but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack which is why it is easier to ask the question.

So basically it's a gamble as to whether you'd get kept on or be re-located to another UK airport.

Do BA ever advertise a Cabin Crew job which are permenant?

VS-LHRCSA
23rd January 2008, 15:09
Recruitment for LGW has always been permanent. They were advertising about a month ago and had offered interviews to too many people. Now these people are seemingly being offered interviews for a temporary contract at EF, which does seem odd.

They recruited for EF back in April/May last year. These were permanent contracts but many people that were recruited have only now begun training.

The last time WW recruited for permanent external applicants was in 1997. They have had some temporary campaigns in the last couple of years. Most were offered LGW after 6 months, I understand only a few remain. Going from WW to LGW was a shock for some and this did cause problems which LGW management are careful not to repeat.

Have you heard this!

Does anyone know that works for LGW if they will be recruiting alot more cabin crew or will it just be a few?

Hi once again I have a few questions Can someone tell me how long before a longhaul flight do we have to be at the airport/work for ?? If we are commuting are we able to travel in our uniform? (I am coming from France)Also do you know if we will receive discount with Natonal Express coaches?Once we have our ID 90 after the six months, will we receive discount with the other airlines ?? (My friend said something about this but just wanted to clarify) in particular Air France? Thanks in advance Anna XX

From memory, report time is around -80 however depending on the terminal however the report times prior to trips will be changing with T5. The actual flight time doesn't really matter when it comes to rosters, it's the report time that you need to work to. You should generally arrive a good 20 minutes before your report time. You can commute in uniform, in fact you are not allowed to check your uniform into the hold, you either carry it, or wear it. National Express will give you a coach card when you get your staff ID, you will receive a discount but it's not a huge amount. Most airlines will offer staff travel after 6 months.

Hey guys, I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner, but everytime I tried to reply on the thread, it said something about me not being able to do so :s
Anyway I want to let you know that I went for the interview on Friday 11th January in the morning. It was a great experience just being there and getting the feel of BA's professionalism etc. I was one of the last people to go into the interview, so I was one of the last to leave. I actually really liked the interview, because they gave you the chance to really show what you had to give - even though it is nerve-wracking! A the end of it, I thought I wasn't going to get the job because I'd pointed out the negative aspects of being crew, e.g. "loneliness within a crowd syndrome", etc. But when I got back to Portugal that evening at 11pm, I checked my emails on my phone as I got out of the plane. Turned out they had emailed me 3h later saying I had the job! I couldn't be happier, but the thing is, I'm not too sure if I can accept the job, because I already have a place to study Management at LSE (London School of Economics) in September, which would mean I would have to take a gap year (that is, if the university allows it). Anyway I want to thank everyone on here for your help. I'm also wondering whether there's anyone else out there from my interview? Because I didn't get a chance to exchange emails at the end...

Thank you everyone who helped me, and good luck to all of you applying! Just be yourselves and you will be fine!

Sorry to interfere in a Cabin Crew thread but as a "Nigel" who commutes from France via LGW to LHR ( still with me?) could I add:

National Express no longer offer staff discount on the LHR - LGW service. You can however buy a block of ten open single tickets for 99 STG :oh:
Journey from North Terminal to T4 takes at least 45 minutes, LGW to Central Area at least an hour...much more on a bad day. ALso allow plenty time to transfer to Compass Centre - hopefully it'll all be simpler/slicker when we report at T5.

There is no formal BA shuttle bus (unlike Virgin) however you can sometimes thumb a lift on the occasional BA buses shuttling crew beween the two bases...but don't rely on it. Once you're on line you'll often as not find someone on the crew who is driving in the LGW direction after the trip so you may be able to get a lift.

Re travelling in uniform - An absolute "No No" on Air France, but you can get away with disguising it( though that's contrary to BA rules so I couldn't possibly recommend it:ok:). Yes, we do get discounted tickets with Air France. Uniforms not a problem on BA flights. I must admit I haven't seen the ruling about not putting uniform in hold baggage (VS-LHRCSA's comment) - that's a new one on me and if it exists it must be a Cabin Crew only rule...

Hiya, just wondering, do we get paid for the training?

I heard that we get an "allowence" but what is that allowence?

Do they give you enough pay to cover your living expenses for the month. Going to be so skint if they dont!!!!

Thanks in advance!

You get your basic pay for the first month as you will be training and not flying, so therefore you won't receive any allowances.

Your second month will be slightly higher as you do some flying after you training, so you will receive around half a months allowances provided your ID is ready when your course finishes.

Your first real pay will be month three.

VS-LHRCSA please only post what you know to be entirely correct. Do you fly for BA??
Ok in answer to your question you are always paid your basic however BA also give you a training allowance. This is less when you are training at LGW but when they send you up to LHR the allowance goes up for the week and a half you are away. It totals approx £300.
So in effect month one and two do have allowances on your payslip but budget for basic + £150 for months one and two.

If yes, how much?

PAX Agent.

I was never paid a training allowance and as far as I know, allowances are only paid if you are training away from base. This would not be the case for someone someone based at WW training at LHR.

I've never been a paid an allowance for:

Ad-hoc Manual Handling Training
Recurrent SEP
OOF

I was however paid an allowance for my FIRST training as this was held at Waterside and I was LGW based.

I am happy to be corrected if something has changed recently. I go out of my way to help people on here and I do not appreciate being disrespected on an open forum.

hello guys!
I am starting my EF initial course in a few weeks and i am a bit worried about one of the references. I have got all cleared but one. This one in particular is causing me trouble since they refuse to give any reference. They cant be bothered because the human resources team is disgusting. This is also a spanish company and in spain they are not used to provide references to other employers. So, my question is, does anyone know what happens if you can not get a reference from one of your past employers? Can you cover the gap somehow? Has this happened to anybody when getting refs for BA and can tell me how this can be sorted out?

KellyMarie, you won't have to go to LGW at all for your training. All will be done at LHR. Re allowances, as VS mentioned, we will only be paid our basic salary with no flying allowances as there wont be any flying involved during our training. May be there might be some small hidden allowances, like if we have to come in over the week-end, I am not sure. May be someone who started EF/WW last year can enlighten us more on that.

VS I wasn't trying to disrespect...just jet lagged and at the end of my tether with LGW crisis at the moment. Everyone is trying to jump ship as quickly as possible!
Well when I joined we were paid training allowances and at LGW we always get paid for our training whether it is at our home base (i.e premium academy) or SEP at braincrank!
Plus the allowance increases when away from base i.e overnight allowances.
Once again this is what I was paid in 2006 - apologies VS but please let this one go by. :ouch:

VS-LHRCSA

No worries, Pax Agent.

I know what you mean about people leaving LGW. I was there for years (albeit WW LGW) and I watched the base fade into a shadow of it's former self. We had 45 long haul routes there, then 25, then 9. We lost the 747 and the 767 - along with a lot of allowances.

Part of my current job is to deal with the aftermath of the LGW crisis. It's frustrating because it was so easily avoidable. That said, I would love to come back to LGW. Right now, they won't release me

It all depends on how you bid as to how much money you receive in allowances. I've copied my total allowances from my December acheived allowances, which are:
BID PERIOD TOTALS: NON-MEAL: 841.55 MEALS: 1252.44 GRAND TOTAL: 2093.99

So total allowances for december were £2093.99 this is plus my Basic salary. As I bid for 3 day trips followed by 3 day trips I'm away alot and only seem to do 1 there and back a month, The least I've ever earnt is £1600.00 After tax including allowances the most I've taken home is £2400.00 and on average My salary is around £1900.00 per month. Hope this helps. By the way I'm Main crew at Eurofleet Heathrow.

I would say that probably most people reading your query simply don't know, or wouldn't want to venture an answer in case they are wrong.

My advice would be to call BA, or if you are using the new referencing website, call the hotline 01159 685 352. They would be the best ones to speak to.

You would think that a personal reference would do but it would be best to have this confirmed by the referencing company.

Can I clarify with you:

You are LGW based
You did SEP at LHR for a week
You received an away from base allowance of £320
You received no other allowances for the customer service training.

Sorry but this has kinda thrown me. Did you do AvMed at Hangar 6 and did you get an allownce for it?

This is what I found on the BA website :

To be a minimum of 5ft 2in (1.575m) and a maximum height of 6ft 2in (1.86m) in height, with weight in proportion, such that the ability to perform all job functions is not hindered.
The ability to, whilst facing forward, walk and fit comfortably down the aisle, fit quickly through the overwing window exit, and to fit into a jump seat harness without modification including closure without a seatbelt extension

Im gatwick based and I got my basic pay and for our week and half.
which was Wed-friday and then monday-friday the allowances where to cover our meals at the hotel as we are not LHR Based crew.

So it was my basic wage plus £320.

Customer service is at hanger 6 and also AVMED and the only
SEP we do at Hanger 6 is the aircraft visit 737 :ok:

VS-LHRCSA
25th January 2008, 16:17
Thanks Flower Duet, that's what I thought. To summarise my understanding:

Someone based at LHR, who does ALL their training at Cranebank (LHR) will not be paid allowances as there is no need for them. They are not staying overnight anywhere and are not having to purchase meals from hotels, which is what allowances are fundamentally for.

If you are LGW based and do your SEP training at Cranebank, you will be given a hotel and allowances because it is away from base and you will have to in theory purchase your meals at the hotel - just like on a trip.

Sorry to sound pedantic and I'm open to correction but I think it's important to clarify this so people can have an awareness of the financial implications of training, that way they can budget in advance.

Thanks again, Flower Duet.

Just had an email from BA saying that they are trying to get in touch with one of my references. The place where I worked (back in 2000) has been sold and the company no longer exists, so I provided them with my manager at the time´s personal contact details.
They sent me an email saying that he gave me a reference but he no longer works there, so I need to send them the telephone number of the company???? My ex-manager told me he clearly explained to them the company no longer exists.....so how on earth do I supply them with a contact telephone number.......???

..it gets better, they then say that I should chase up another reference as they dont speak english...Im sorry but whoever said it was an obligation to speak English in Spain???? Surely BA must understand that we dont all live and work in the UK and if they need references from other countries then find people that speak other languages to work in recruitment. My references will be in Spanish because guess what........this is Spain.

Spoon82, if you read the FAQs about references once you log in to view your submitted application and referees' section, you will see that its the Department of Transport who needs all those details in order to issue you your ID pass. If they have asked your ex-manager to provide the number of the company although it does not exist, just give it to them. Surely your ex boss still remembers the number or must have some sort of document with the number on it. At least they will have something to work on and eventually find out that you are telling the truth. As for the Spanish speaking only referee, its a tricky one. I suppose you will have to find another one or ask BA whether you could provide a character reference instead. I had to provide a character one as I only have one job reference. Good luck.

Hello,

Does BA phone your past/current employers or they do write/fax them?

If they phone it might a bit of a problem for foreign employers who may be able to understand a respond to a written document but not necessarily be able to speak and even less to understand spoken english

Do you know which way they go about it?

Christin
29th January 2008, 14:12
As Londonphilou said if you give them exact name of the company includin g tel numbers they may trace it as being a company that ceased trading, they may also find out whi the directors were. In England it is possible simply by goinf on company house web site and I am sure there is the equivalent in Spain.
Kelly, your ex employers acted illegally (it's an offense not to pay nics etc) and you should report them expecially if you have worked there for a 10 months period.

Yes, I think a week before the training course starts is too late. I live abroad myself and I am going to the UK next week just for the uniform fitting !! Leaving it to the week before you risk not having your uniform when required to wear it in the training course and that may not make BA trainers very happy! But this is my peronal opinion.

I start on the 25th of Feb, I originally had my fitting for the 15th Feb, I called Uniforms and they said it was better for them if you could have your appointment earlier, then theyve got more time to get the uniform ready.

Don't worry about uniform fitting! I had mine eight days before I started training and I know several people on my course weren't able to get a date for fitting before training and had to do it during! Not a problem at all!

As for references, they will contact them by post. Also, in some cases, by fax.

On first day of training, they will give you a handout, personal learning journal and a couple of documents. Be prepared by the end of the course you have loads of manuals, books and paper!

Basically you are put in a room with 4 or 5 other candidates and you are given a scenario or an issue to solve or discuss, for example mine was a tour operator who had a list of complaints from its customers and compensation money to be shared among them, but we had to decide who deserves to get them and how much they should get too. It was something like this but you could get any other scenario. Anyway, this exercise is carried out to see how you work as a team. They are not looking who has got the best idea or who is the clever one. Thats where your communication skills come into play. Before you start the excercise, you might be asked to introduce yourself to each other and say something about yourself. You can say whatever you like. Do LISTEN what others are saying as you might be asked in the 2to1 interview to say something about your team members. At least remember their names. And they might also ask you what were your contributions in the exercise and how did you feel etc. Hope that helps.

Hello all,

I'm starting very soon and was wondering how people were getting on who are already on the course? I think one started last week if so hope you are enjoying it?

Lopnphilou been for the uniform fitting yet?

Also to add to the above answer try to remember a few details about the people in your group (ie, in mine someone was a keen golfer, another loved asian food etc...this shows at the interview that you quickly picked up on small details that can make a difference when talking to a passenger)

Hello!

Hope you've all had a good start...and you are enjoying your training, I immagine you must be really busy at the moment and possibly not have much time to visit PPRUNE....However if you ever do just keep us posted and tell us how you're doing.

All the best to all! also the ones will be starting soon;)

WelcomeAboard, my uniform fitting is scheduled for the 12th of February.
Was going to apply for my CRC on the 3rd of Feb, that is a month exactly before I start but I got a call today and they asked me to apply for it as soon as possible. So I have just done it and sent off everything that was required.

Hi,

I know this has probably been asked but what are they telling people at the interview will happen at the end of the 11 month contract, if anything at all. Does anyone already working for BA have any ideas. Problem is I'd be leaving a permanent contract to go.

Thanks.

Definitely no guarantees at the end of 11 month contract. Worst option is 'thank you and goodbye' best position will be an offer of either Gatwick or Heathrow S/H. Something in the middle would be ground based jobbie i.e. Customer Service Agent or another 11 month contract. Lots of flights being canx due to no crew, so everything to play for!

Yes, this has been asked many times. I have copied and pasted my answer to this from 27DEC07.

'Officially, there is no chance of being kept on after the 11 months.

If there are vacanies at EF, there is no reason that they wouldn't be offered places there but again, transfer lists will need to be honoured first.'

If you ask the at the interview all they can say is that it is an 11 month contract. It's a bit of a risk but worth it if you get a permanent contract.

CCL1, I first applied for EF LHR permanent back in 2005 and I did not get it and it was not until last April when they started recruited again for permanent EF at LHR. In between that time I could have applied for temp EF or WW at LHR but I was not going to risk leaving my permanent job for a temp job. So I was lucky this second time although it was a long wait and it was made longer after I got the job to wait another 7 months to get a course. But I did not mind waiting as temp is not for me. Some people dont mind taking a gamble and I think its up to you really. In the past LHR WW temps were offered perm LGW as there were vacancies there. I understand it has been made clear that there's no guarantee of a perm post after the WW temp contract. Saying that you never know they might offer you perm EF or LGW but not perm WW as it will be against the unions agreements. To be eligle for perm WW you have to start with perm EF first. And LGW people can tell you more re new agreements coming soon where LGW crew will be eligible to transfer to LHR EF/WW.

can anybody tell me what the BA policy is on jewellery? More specifically rings. Is it just engagement/wedding rings only, or are you allowed a ring on each hand? Just to clarify as its my birthday soon and my grandma wants to buy me a ring. i dont want her to waste her money if i won't be allowed to wear it.:bored:

In the EU, cabin crew can only operate up to 900 hours within one year. If you start getting close to 900 hours you will be rostered less flying which will damage your earnings. LGW crew are especially vulnerable to this as they have less time off between trips but it does affect LHR crew as well.

There has been speculation that the WW temps will be rostered high hours which will mean they will reach their 900 hours by the end of the 11 months and will not be able to be kept on but I personally don't see how this is possible when you will only actually be flying for 8.5 months (plus 1 months leave and 1.5 months for training adds up to 11 months). I guess it's something to be aware of and will be explained during your training.

Kellymarie - how long was it after you had received your initial e-mail saying that you had been successful that you were offered a place on a training course? My son has just been accepted, and was wondering what was the average wait for a place on a course. I started flying 34 years ago and things were very different in those days!! Thanks, and I really hope you enjoy flying - BA is a great airline.

It really depends on the fleet and the operation. I waited two years for EF and then moved to WW in 8 months. Somes have waited 7/8 months for EF while others have gotten WW (temp) straightaway or within a few weeks. Bottomline, WW temps are probably going to go through the system quicker because their sole purpose is to allow movement of manpower around the fleets.

I noticed on CC.com that the training course starting on the 25th of feb is a mixture of LHR EF and Gatwick crew.

Is it normal for BA to train groups who are at different bases?? I suppose the training is the same for both bases!!

Anyone else on the 25th??

Londonphilou
2nd February 2008, 15:38
Spoon, there are two groups on 25th of Feb but one from each fleet/base.
The EF will be at LHR and the SF is at Gatwick. They are not never mixed as far as I know.

VS-LHRCSA
2nd February 2008, 16:26
No, not mixed but courses can run parallel to each other. Cranebank is a big place with many training rooms. Parallel classes can also be run at Hangar 6, too.

LHRCSA are you saying that you waited 2 years after you accepted the job with BA for a training course for EF? Or you just waited 2 years before you transferred to EF from a different base? And then you just waited 8 months to be transferred to WW from EF? Just trying to get my head round the fact that they interview for jobs for EF and then people have to wait so long for a course! Not sure I would want to accept a job, they contact my present employer for references, I lose my job because of this just to have to wait so long for a course date! Confused! Sorry!

landlady
3rd February 2008, 10:41
As I understand it, BA do not contact referees until a course date has been offered and accepted. Thankyou for your reply, Kellymarie - if my son enjoys flying as crew as much as I do, then he'll be fine. In my long and varied history with BA I would say to everyone that things change minute by minute, and nothing is set in stone. If you roll with the punches, do your best in the job that you were employed to do, then the world, as they say, is your lobster!!

VS-LHRCSA
3rd February 2008, 16:26
Moonchild, yes, I applied, was interviewed, accepted and then told that there were no courses and would have to wait. The wait dragged on for two years. I was called out of the blue and offered EF LHR. I then moved to WW LGW in 8 months. I could have gone to WW LHR a couple of years after that but chose not to at that stage.

When I applied, it was not base specific. They were sending people directly in WW LHR, WW LGW and EF LHR. There were some people who were sent to WW LHR and forced onto EF after 6 months, others managed to stay. By the time they got to me, all direct entry to WW LHR had stopped. This was around 1997/8 if I remember correctly.

Londonphilou
3rd February 2008, 22:25
Moonchild, don't panic! :)
At the interview, you will be told about what to do if you get offered the post. Basically when you are offered the job, you should not hand in your resignation UNTIL you get a start date which is normally given at least 6 weeks before. Some people get it 2 or even 3 months early. It varies.
And your referees won't be contacted either until after you have been given your start date and you will also be notified prior to that.
As far as the waiting for a course is concerned I think the 2 years wait was an exceptional one. It could be some weeks or months. I waited for 7 months but that does not mean it will be the same this year. I only handed in my resignation two weeks ago and my referees have also just been contacted at the same time.
Is the EF post temp or permanent? Just take one step at a time and everything will be fine but be prepared to wait. Good luck.

Hi,

Do you know approximately how much time you have to allocate for the uniform fitting appointment? Do you have to wait long or you are dealt with at your app. time? Will 1 hour be enough?
Got a train to catch.. ..
Thanks

Thanks everyone for your help. Londonphilou I was told first contracts were temp for EF then told that they were perm! I wouldn't go for a temp one anyway as I don't want the insecurity of a temp one with financial commitments. Will just have to wait and see what happens at the interview anyway...

Bear in mind it is a test of your swimming ability - you will also be putting on a lj in the water and heaving yourself into a life raft, and I mean heaving.

Probably not. I don't think they will go through once again what they experienced in 2006 when WW were transfered to LGW.
