Howdy Folks.
Found this site by accident, Like it lots.
In the mid to late 80's there were a flight school in Cumberland, MD. Back then there were probably 100 Norwegian or Swedish students at any given time.
I was hoping to find out how the former Cumberland Airlines Alumni were doing. Who is still flying and who is not etc.
Take care.
Joe.

I was a student over there at the flying camp they had for the younger kids. I was there in '86, 87. I was actually going to fly there in a couple of weeks to see the old place! I was trying to get in touch with some friends I went to camp with there myself.
Sorry I dont have more info for you...

I was there from September -87 to early -89. Only have contact with a few of the Swedes that went there. Some still flies, some don't. A few stayed in the US afterwards. Good old Barnstormer's at the flight school! Had many a BLT's there.

Hey, Robert. My funny story there was on the day I did my first solo. My instructor told me when we were at the end of runway 23. I did 3 full stop landings, then taxied back, parked, and grabbed something to drink in the cafe. About an hour later my instructor walked in dripping wet ( it was 100 deg that day) told everyone his student left him at the end of the runway and realized that he wasnt comming back!! I have a lot of good memories of that place

Hello Robert! I was in the first group of Norwegians, arriving in the summer of 1985. I did not go to Lake Havasu though, where I understand you ran the business.... But I am sitting besides a collegue in SAS that lived in your house in Havasu back in 1986, and he would like very much to get in contact with you if you could send me your e-mail adress as PM. Regards H

I woke up this morning and the first thing that popped into my mind was your Dad and Cumberland Airlines. Went to the computer and found this site. Where are you living these days. Have you started anything on the history of the Airline?

I worked for Dale Nicholson/Cumberland Airlines at BWI airport in 1979 during the spring and summer. Hired on as a full time ramp (rat) agent......the big flight of the day was the late morning Beech 99 departure from BWI-OCE(Ocean City,MD)....Ben (cant remember his last name) was chief pilot and always flew this route...also remember the Navajo N6629L which crashed( I have a pic of this aircraft taken at the Commuter Gate N-1 at BWI Airport, with a pilot Im not familiar with)...the Navajos flew to Cumberland and Richmond......I remember a pilot named Brian who flew the Navajos, I flew to RIC with him one night on a mail run from BWI.............

I instructed there in 1967-1969 at CBE, then flew Navajos for Commuter (CBE-BWI) and Airmail (CBE-MRB-BWI). One of the fun experiences of my life. Flew as Chief Pilot for a short time when Cumberland Airlines was bought by Stan Shapiro, KPT (ag GAI-CBE). Now involved with a new iteration of Pan Am and retirecd from FAA / DoD.

Hey Everyone. Bryan Hunter here. I worked for Cumberland Airlines from 1978-1984.

I flew some but did much of the administrative work and marketing for Cumberland Airlines; I had a close relationship with Dale Nicholson. After Cumberland I was employed by Delta Air Lines in FLL and DFW and worked in their corporate sales and marketing division. I was with Delta for 20 years. I now live in Dallas, Texas and will rejoin Delta this January 2013!

There were some amazing folks employed by Cumberland. The Chief Pilot at the time was Ben Wolters; an outstanding guy.:)

Hello,
I know that this thread is really old.
I was a student pilot in the summer of 1986 and lived with Runie, his girlfriend, Chell (spelling is wrong I'm sure) and was friends with Helena and Andre. I also worked as a counselor for the 1986 summer camp. I haven't spoken to anyone from Cumberland since then and stumbled upon this thread by accident.
Please reply and let me know how everyone is; it would be interesting to know if they all found airline jobs.
Do you know what happened to Dale? What happened to the airline? I haven't been in the area for a long time.
Thanks
Eddie

Hi! Glad to have found this forum! Hope some folks are still checking in on it. I was a captain for Cumberland Airlines in 1979. I remember Ben Walters, Chief Pilot and the owner, Dale Nicholson. Sorry to read that Dale has passed. Many fond memories of flying for this airline. About to retire after 32 years of flying for United Airlines. Someone recalled a flight on a mail run to Richmond with a Brian. I'm sure that was me! Be happy to hear from anybody that may still be looking in on this forum. Will stay posted.

Hi retired Brian from UA,
If I am not mistaken, you flew at W-22 for Charli Benn in the late seventies.
We met at Cumberland, I was instructing and flying with guys like Ben,Lenny and Walt on the Be 99.
I retired 3.5 years ago from KLM after a super career.
Now I am flying for Etihad Airways, since there retirement is 65.
Hope things are well with you?Send me a mail adress if you like, take care,
Gerard.

Hi Robert,

i was in the last class, I meet you a few times, you still owe me $6500 from the bankruptcy of the airline, maybe one day you will make up the cash that was swindled from the students. Louis M works for FAA and some of the instructors work for Delta,
