Yes some are using it. Most i know are in the grassy fields, know what i mean :p The standard Etislut connection isn't good enough. Lots of guys in the Oasis have it, partucularly the US brothers.

I have been using it since it came out. Works excellent if the location of the slingbox has a fast upload speed. Etisalat speed is fast enough for a decent picture. Make sure the location of your slingbox has a Digital Video recorder, so you aren't tied to the actual run time.

The picture quality sucks. Choppy sound also. Have to use a VPN to get the stream. Very disappointed. :ugh:

When I am on a layover, however, the picture and sound are crystal clear.

F:mad:ing Etisalat.

For the record, where the slingbox is located, they have 512kbps upstream...more than the 384kbps that slingbox recommends.

Showtime= reruns from the 80 and shows from 2 seasons ago = :ugh:
Sling box = :D got my seal of approval.... :ok:
PS No need for VPN. I Don't live in Media or DSO.

Well, I live in DSO and need the VPN. If you have any tricks, please pm them.

I promised the wife better tv with the slingbox, and I have not been able to deliver on that yet!

Looking forward to good old DirecTV (good quality picture too). :}

Dreambox (http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/Bereiche/Produkte/) is better than the Slingbox (http://www.slingbox.com), however it will land you in "hot water" should the local authorities figure out you have one. The only reason to get a Dreambox (http://www.dreamboxworld.com/dbw/main.htm) is to pirate Sat Channels, so "do if you dare".;)

Dare I say we do?!;):p:8:}:E:ok:

have been using the sling box av for the past one and half years. The audio and video work perfectly in my home wireless network, ADSL speed at home being 54mbps & streaming on my laptop at 60-122 kbps but as soon as I go on layovers and connect to the hotel's wi-fi the picture quality becomes very poor but the audio is still good inspite of the internet speed at the hotel also being similar to my home network. Am I missing something? Any suggestions o highly appreciated on improving the video quality.
Thanx

Anyone know where or who in Dubai/ UAE is familiar with programming the Dreambox ???, its for my friend of course ;)

I suppose a pm would be best on this issue.

SOPS, the slingbox connects to your cable/satellite decoder at your home and then you connect it to t'internet and it streams the picture over t'internet to your laptop/pc wherever you may be in the world. I understand it has an IR thingy to so you can remotely change the channel on your decoder and watch what you want.
Great to hear that people have it here and it works, can anyone tell me their connection package with etislut (sic) ie is it 1meg or 2meg, 512kbps etc?
cheers

Dream box is not the way to go.......Now days you can pick up boxes that auto -configure and auto update good as the real thing. Ask down the satellite souk no louder than a whisper and you will be rewarded grasshopper.....

had problems with DB freezing up and server issues plus its a pain downloading latest keys...No problem now with the "starmax" more response no lagging good easy menu structure and its a no brainer for config multi lnb /dish set ups, does it all for you in auto set up mode best is the auto updating feature of keys and software

I Have used my sling box in the UAE for over six mths . So far I have had a few
teething problems, but once sorted out it has worked great .
The down load speed should be a minimum of 1 Gb in Dubai , It does not seem to make too much of a difference if you have the 2 GB Etisalat package . The most important speed is the upload "back in the real world" . 2 Gb seems to be the minimum for decent quality .
My sling system comes from America which is 2 Gb upload and 1 Gb down in Dubai with no vpn required . It is hooked up to a 43in DLP TV and works for all my programming needs( except we need higher downloads in Dubai to watch fast action sporting events) .
The problem in Dubai is everything seems to get filtered down to somewhere between 300 kbps to 700 kbps (regardless of which Etitsalat pkg you have). On "bad Etisalate days" it can drop below 100 kbps . Once again the frustration of living in a part of the world that still thinks High speed is 2 Gb .

The teething problems I mentioned related to modems back in America - the setup can get tricky but with a little tech knowlege and the Slingbox web site
it can be worked through . ( http://www.slingbox.com/ )

The other problem for some reason is Etisalat seems to inhibit (not on purpose I am sure ), the "auto lookup function" of the sling box program .
Not to get too techie , but the slingbox program looks for the IP address of your host or where the sling box is located and then connects . If your host has a static IP address life, it is simpler for you select this IP address once and
the sling box program no longer has to find the new IP address.
Most internet providers will provide your host with a static IP address on request and it should not be at any additional cost (I believe) .

But do you have problems with the dream box and others freezing up? Or losing the scambled code for a day or so?
