Could someone please tell me the reason why BA 757's and some 737's have a black ring painted on the nose/radome?
Thanks

They were (are?) trials aircraft for the Micro-Wave Landing System. MLS.

I recall that -KK (757) and -WB (767) were used in the MLS trials but don't recall any 737's. Was there anything else that they may have been painted up for?

I thought MLS trial aircraft had "C of G" type patterns on the radome. Last saw KK with DHL; MLS antenna was still fitted.

What is the benefit in using Micro wave signals?

MLS signals can be bent.....around corners or over terrain. No need for a ten mile straight ILS

BIKK still has the MLS antennas, but nothing is connected to it.

MLS trial aircraft had the black/white quater filled circle like a CofG cymbol as stated.
the black ring i beleive is for connecting the bonding strips within the radome.
