As Mrs '599 and self were walking up Cornmarket Street in Oxford at 1240 this morning, 2 x VC10 in echelon starboard thundered overhead in a gentle descending left-hand turn just underneath the lowish cloudbase. So what? Well, we weren't the only ones to find this a highly stirring sight and sound -- half the folks in the street gazed skywards as well as us.

Made my day, and nice to see that other peeps appreciated it too.

Bit sad though isn't it when we are stirred by 40 year old flying buses instead of formations of screaming fighters and bombers, because that is what we are reduced to now, transport and refuelling or put another way choppers, buses and tankers.

How often do you see Ex Airlines in close formation ?
That's probably why it's a sight.

(Plus I doubt you'd see fighters in formation down south. Far too much controlled airspace for them;) )

Always a delight to see though! Sometimes the Oxford Railway Station is used for the "cheating" in the radar pattern (or is that just me then??).

Pretty impressive line astern at Heathrow most days:}

but I do know what you mean about it looking impressive when you get two big airliners in close formation. I quite enjoyed the spectacle of one of 23 sqdns 707 tearing around yorkshire at low level a couple of weeks ago but the two tonlas beating it up were more impressive god help me for saying it.

Even more impressive though to see half a dozen vulcans, or a couple of Victors or diamond nine of phantoms than two aging flying buses is all I'm saying.
