Could anybody advise on the suitablity of OIIE over OIII as a diversion, i.e. engineering, facilities, connections, quick turnarounds. Anyone any experience of Mashad? It would be for a 4-engine wide-body. Many thanks.

EK now use OIIE as a destination several times a day, so that would be my preference. OIII was the previous int airport for Tehran, I am not sure what they use it for now but it is still available as an alternate.
OIIE has a new terminal, good facillities and is much easier to get into than the old OIII(big mountains etc):ok:

Thanks Shockwave and Muttley. Our div charts didn't have a ground chart for OIIE so it was difficult to assess. Is Mashad any good for emergencies, e.g. after a depressurisation?:)

what is the icao code for mashad?
I don't think I have heard about it so can't comment.
Airports we use or consider as the best emergency airports in Iran other than Tehran are:
Shiraz, Esfahan,Tabriz and Kurmanshar(spelling? OICC I think) all are ok for wide body jets. Tabriz has some interesting approaches and high terrain but is still a good option when in trouble. Shiraz is good but you need to consider your missed app gradient before you commit yourself.
cheers.

Good facilities, parallel runways, ILS32R, VOR14L.

Prevailing wind favours 14L.

Due to the location of a holy site in the city the final approach to 14L is very steep, potentially unstable.

Dont know about de-icing facilities, but assume available since RPT operations there year round.

Enjoy

Bushehr also a good bet - especially if the wx is a bit grotty up in Shiraz... It's sea level, not too many mountains around, long runways and open H24.
