A Qatar Airways flight QR068 from Madrid to Doha has been delayed in the Spanish capital for full safety checks following a technical problem with one of its brakes.

The incident happened at 2248 hrs (Spanish local time) last night. The aircraft was due to arrive at Doha International Airport early this morning (September 9) at 0635 hrs (Qatar local time).

The aircraft, an Airbus A300 with 207 passengers and 13 crew onboard, suffered overheating of a brake as it returned to the stand shortly after push back at Barajas International Airport in Madrid.

As per normal procedures, in the interests of the safety of all those on board, the captain declared an emergency and ordered an evacuation of all passengers and crew. One passenger and one crew member were slightly injured during the evacuation and were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Qatar Airways is working closely with the appropriate authorities to determine the cause of the incident. The aircraft is undergoing a full safety check and will only depart Madrid once the airline and authorities deem it is fit to do so.

Qatar Airways staff in Madrid worked quickly to transport all passengers and crew to a local hotel where they were accommodated overnight before being re-routed on alternative flights to their final destination.

unless those brakes were blazing hot and threatened to set the aircraft on fire I cant think of a reason to initiate an evacuation but lets see what the investigation will bring up to the surface. Hopefully a bit more than the last ridiculous safety bulletin. No No No QR hasn't got any problems!!! Yea right :ugh:

Rather than making some ill-advised comments about whether or not "QR has problems" or questioning the judgement of the aircraft commander who - in my opinion - probably made the decision that he or she considered to be the right one at the time, wouldn't it be best to just be thankful that the incident was not as serious as it could have been, and that everyone was ok??????

i didn´t known that an emergency avacuation in QR is part of the normal procedure, ..!!! in my QRH it still part of the EMERGENCY PROCEDURE... :\

This is what it was given on the news channels and written in the newspapers in Romania:
"Ten persons were wounded, Saturday, on Madrid-Barajas Airport during the evacuation of a Qatar Airways aircraft after one of the aircraft's wheels caught fire-informs the spanish press. The biggest wound was a tibia fracture and the passenger was taken to the hospital. All the wounds were determined by the crowd which was formed at the exits of the aircraft. According to the spanish press, the pilot who was opertaing a Madrid-Doha flight, activated the breaks while he was preparing for take off because he heard a weird noise at the landing gear.
The break caused a fire at one of the wheels, and from here the evacuation of the plane. The fire was put to rest right away by the airport's fire brigade."

Some of the posts on this thread display an extraordinary level of immaturity and criticism by armchair experts who were nowhere near the incident that took place.

Shampoo and Pipe Rider - had either of you been in the same situation and faced with an emergency situation, I am pretty sure you would be less forthcoming with self-criticism. Right???

The crew of this particular A300 (Bravo Victor?) managed to evacuate a full aircraft of muti-nationals with only very minor injuries. As (albeit possibly geographically distant) colleagues of yours within the industry, shouldn't you be patting them on the back instead of throwing stones at them?
