About 20 minutes apart eastbound I spotted 3 LH MD 11 Freighters on UL9.
Anyone know what was going on? :bored:

Maybe just coincidence? I've no idea how many MD11Fs they have but there are two due out of Frankfurt in the next few hours bound for O'Hare and Atlanta.

Thanks for your observations Kestrel.
Lufthansa, I believe, are the biggest operator of this type with 19 in service (Nov 2005).
I often see a single MD 11 Freighter nearly every evening going east on UL9 but seeing 3 in an hour must be more than a coincidence

Freight is a big business nowadays and requires big capacity. Where there is freight there might be more freight...

Could be linked with formula 1 (last week was in the USA). Or lot's of automobile parts are shipped between Germany and Detroit for Daimler-Chrysler.

Worldwide, FedEx is in first place with the most followed by UPS then Lufthy is in third place with 19 as cieloitaliano said; 14 Production, 5 Passenger to Freighter Mods.

From what I've heard, they all like em too.

Thanks for your learned intervention 11Fan :ok: it got me swatting up on the MD 11F. Especially the threads dealing with the UPS fleet. :ooh:

FEDEX MD-11 flightcrews sometimes depart on a trip which continues east around the world. Some have deadheaded from MEM to the Middle East, and there begin their actual revenue trip with later stops either in China or Narita, Japan etc. :hmm:

Does Lufthansa ever fly freight planes to or from Birmingham (BHM), AL? There is a large Mercedes factory about an hour southwest of BHM.

IO,

Couldn't say for certain. According to their website, these are their typical US destinations.

Maybe someone from Lufthy will chime in.

Don't think so, but 3 go into East Midlands most nights - some in Lufthansa Cargo colours and some in Gemini Cargo, but all using Lufthansa Cargo c/signs
