Does anyone know if it is possible to convert FAA ATPL to chinese equivalent without being employed by an Chinese airline.

I think if I have chinese licenses it will easier to find employemnt in China.

Unless its written in Chinese, Im sure its very much do-able seeing as though Jimmy already has an FAA ATPL

What I have heard its very similar to the FAA ATPL written. Actually they use the same questions.

The problem is that you can not do the writtens unless an airline is sponsoring you.

I've heard that the process to convert to CAAC ATP takes a long time, about a year because of bureaucracy. Yes, you're right, the written is FAA based, actually out of the Gleim. But I didn't realize they won't allow non-airline sponsored pilots to do their own conversion. Maybe you should try contacting Beijing Pan Am flight school for some info about this.

We'd also like to know if you do get some info about this. So please post here....Thanks!

To have a chinese licence you have to pass the theoritical ATPL (no validation). Level is equivalent to the FAA BUT...
questions are awfully translate from the chinese.

I can guarantee it is not the same set of question!
It is more a guesswork, that a real test due to the language problem. Paperwork are awful as well, expect it to take a looong time.
Two months and counting for me, with the support of a major airline. I don't know if it is possible/authorized without an airline support.
