well i am 25 years old and am currently training for my PPL. iv always had an obsession with aviation (yes obsession!) and always wanted to be an engineer but having been a bum in school (wish id listen to daddy right! he did say "study son, youll regret it") anyhow, i took the buissness route wich hasnt turned out bad but my true ambition and dream of being a aircraft engineers has never stopped haunting me.

if it is possible for me to persue this dream now.. i will. at 25 have i missed the boat? what do i require and is there any info you guys can give me on were and how to start? financialy i am stable but really want the change of career. what are my options?

any help/advice would be very apreciated. i wait for youre responses.

Hi there,

I started an apprenticeship with a large airline at the age of 22. I attended university for 3 years but decided to leave to pursue a career in aviation.

The first few years are tough from a salary point of view, but at least you're getting paid for your training!

Provided you pass all exams (EASA PART 66) within your training period (approx 4 - 5 years) you should come out with a B1 / B2 Licence depending on which way you lean (Mechanical or Avionic respectively)

If you have a serious interest in aviation and wish to become a part of it, this is one of the best ways to get into it! It is not unknown for engineers to progress to take a PPL course, followed by their ATPL and MCC while still working as an engineer.

Flight Engineers are a bit of a rarity these days......... one person i know was an Engineer ( Licenced ) applied took a few weeks cours and was excepted on tristars or dc10 thingies by a company, they got rid of the fleet but offered to put him through his pilots training and now he is a first officer with him......... as for going as a flight eng, you will be pushed to find a position as i said, there aint many left.

can anyone tell me does the fact that i dont have any previous qualifications (a levels, degree) set me far back from my goal?

What about the RAF? Good technical training, lots of hands on experience (unless you go eng officer) but not everyones cup of tea.
