Looks like you are getting no response.

Try sending Kaptin M a private message.

My time in Japan was a couple of years back but I loved it.
Do learn some Japanese before you go.

Gambatte!

As an ex pilot for this mob, I would say be very careful what you get yourself in for. Fact is that 2/3 of the original crew who started here have resigned. Often for lower paying jobs , albeit with a more "positive" working environment.
The management is the worst I have ever worked for and that says something coming from an ex contract person.
Expect to have your "contract" re-interpreted by management in any way that suits them. Even the contractors will just shrug their shoulders and say well, if you don't like it there is the door. Also I would never subject my family to living in the comapny shattaku.... Dingy mould infested hole where people will spy on you putting out your garbage to make sure you put it in the right baskets! Like I can't read? Psychos!
Enjoy! Gambatte yeah, you are going to need that!!:D

G'day pilot415 - we've had a management change (for the better), since JB3 worked here, and the foreign pilots employed at JEX are now treated somewhat more "humanely" than the POW-like treatment we received at the hands of the infamous Mr T..
Of the original 24 gaijin, only 9 now remain, and it's possible that that number might be further whittled down this year, as conditions offered by other companies are leaving those at JEX behind.

Your lifestyle will be what YOU make it - with 10 days OFF per month now (iso 8 under the original contract, when JEX did only day return flights), you are almost on a par with what the Japanese receive.
Life is not as easy as in a country where English (or whatever your native tongue is) is often not understood, and where almost everything is written in Kanji, Katakana, or Hiragana, or a combination of all 3.
There is still a "stigma" - a wariness - attached to foreigners, by the Japanese,

The contractors who supply pilots to JAL Express are going to need to make improvements in the current contracts to attract and keep pilots.
Take with a grain of salt, any prophecies of improved conditions given to you.
The contract is what you MIGHT get - depending upon how the management of (JEX) of the day feel. And that management is changed on a regular 2/3 year cycle, which is why we remain wary of becoming convinced that the current good management will remain.
We are expecting a change towards the end of this year.

G'day pilot415 - .

Then perhaps they should hire Japanese pilots for these positions and avoid the "stigma" and "wariness" that gives the Japanese such heartburn ?

If not, why not ?

Because they're short - and getting shorter (not in stature), in the number of available Japanese pilots.
The supply has DRIED UP!

Approximately 1/3 of the current JAL captains will be retiring over the next 2-3 years. One must assume that ANA will lose a similar proportion of their pilots.
But there is nowhere near the number of Japanese pilots available to take the places of those F/O's who will be upgraded to fill the retiring captains' seats.
Training from ab initio to CPL takes around 2 years, under the Japanese system.
Command upgrade (for an experienced....6-8 year F/O) takes around 10 - 12 months.

The Japanese are notoriously slow to make any decision - they are always preceded by meetings, meetings, and more meetings.
The decision to finally start recruting new pilots has only NOW come into effect - about 5 years too late.

Kaptin,

I was just being a wiseguy with my questions. I was reasonably sure I knew the answers.

Well, time for them to start thinking "outside the box", huh ?

I think I knew that you thought you knew what the reason was :}
But I thought that other readers might not have thought that to be the reason, which is why I thought I would post.
I think I've conveyed my thoughts clearly,,,,..what do you think, bafanguy?

time for them to start thinking "outside the box"I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen!

Well, I think you know worlds more about this than I do. All I have is an opinion; you have the experience to be worth listening to.

Hi everyone

We had 3 management and training representatives from JAE come to visit my old school out of Bankstown ( Sydney ) airport and had a meeting with the chief flying instructor and management arranging for PPL training of their cadets. Looks like they will be sending 10 of their cadets to train here.

JAL Express (JEX is the correct abbreviation) have bought into a flying school at Parafield, Adelaide - Flight Training Adelaide Pty Ltd (FTA) - where they will train their cadets.
I've heard nothing at all about them being involved with a training facility in Sydney, DeltaSix.

Kaptin, there may be some who are paying more than JEX, but one who is not is Air Nippon (ANK). I received an email recently offering US$9K after training ($7.2 during training) and pay your own tax. That's not much loot.

SNA is not paying even that I hear.

JapJok, who do you reckon is the best payer in Japan at the moment?

I have the offers for ANK, JEX and Skynet Asia in front of me and once you compare the nett salaries I reckon ANK come out prety well.

Oopps... sorry my bad. You're right there Kaptin M, it's actually J-Air Co. that came in to suss out the facilities in Sydney. They must have mentioned JEX for some reason and that stuck in my head.

They will be sending 10 cadets in December to the school.
