How widespread are FADEC's on piston engines these days? In all the aircraft I've been priviledged to fly/be flown in, they tend to have carb heat and manual mixture controls.
Since my professional field is developing electronic engine control on automotive engines, it seems a little surprising that at least some of the technology hasn't migrated, given the potential gains in fuel efficiency and range for aero engines.
Any comments?

There are manufacturers adopting FADEC - like SMA diesel engines, and Cirrus are working on some - as well as Thielert engines. But FADEC can be defined into different categories if they have Engine manangement systems connected.
