Hi,

I am 18 years old finishing my A grade at May2007 and then I will start my career as a commercial pilot.I love to be in foreign countries so I want to start my pilot career at SIA or CX or MH or EK etc.

So my question is: Is it possible to start a pilot career at one of this airlines as a Austrian citizen?

For SIA, the short answer is yes. But read on.

SIA takes cadets of any nationality PROVIDED they have Singapore Permanent Residence.

Foreigners can get permanent residence in Singapore quite easily if they have a job offer from a Singapore company. In your case , IF you can get a job offer (I know you are all of 18), come and work a while (maybe 2 years), then apply to join SIA as a cadet, yes, you qualify. There are also other ways of becoming a PR, but getting a job here is the normal way.

Note that qualifying for selection, and being selected, are not the same thing.

Only you can answer the questions of whether you think such a path is within your patience and planning, and more importantly what you want to do if you are not selected.

Good luk with your career move Patrick. My suggestion and thats all it is is to get some experience more locally if U can or maybe US for example first. Then go for your Asian carrier if thats your No1 goal.

No point blowing smoke up the poor mans ass... Better to know before getting over here and discovering that most Asian operators will try and rip him off.

Want some advice Patrick_AUSTRIAN? Stay aways from all airlines except Cathay and Dragon. All the rest are out to screw you...

Thanks for the tipp with SIA.
I love my place of birth very much but I love to travel the world and with SIA or other huge airlines I can discover the hole world because they have nice destination all over the world. At AUSTRIAN AIRLINES you just fly to JFK, IAD, YYZ, BKK, NRT, MEL, SYD, SIN that is nice for the first 2 years and then it become maybe boring.
5 years ago I was in Singapore and I love the city "country", a modern City with fresh green flora.
My favourit airline is EMIRATES and I want to fly for them but since I saw all this horrible stories about sick pilots "causes long flight times no spare time".......
But I cant believe this if you love flying and traveling like I do, you take this job.
Is it possible to become a pilot recruit at EMIRATES as a foreign?

Singapore airlines is a brothel! Why would you ever want to leave Europe?

If you dislike it so much, why on earth do you live here?

Asia has its faults, but at least my wife, my daughter and I can walk down any street in relative safety.

If the lads desire is to come to Asia – why not? After all (according to your profile), you did!!

Securing a job as a pilot with any flag carrier or long haul operator – most of which you listed – is not as easy as you may think. First you have to get your license and that obstacle alone will not be easy. Secondly, you will need to get some experience. Flying in Europe has proven itself to be a good route for newly qualified pilots to get into the right hand seat of a jet or at least there are opportunities where you could possibly avail of this should you have the money to self sponsor a type rate and pass the interviews.

Flying for one of the carriers you mention is a great ambition but will only likely happen later on in your career and probably once you have a wife and kids, where moving abroad quickly becomes an old and unrealistic dream.

There are a number of cadet programmes, especially with Asian carriers but most, if not all, are for Nationals or as mentioned, resident permit holders. CX offers a good second officer program once you have 1000 hrs TT, preference I hear to those with Multi IR time and I think you will find this 1000 hrs TT to be pretty much the norm. Now, there are always circumstances where a lucky few get jobs right away with carriers of their dreams but you do want to make your prospects realistic.

Good luck with the training and don’t rush it.

How old are you Latif? Because you sure sounds like a kid to me. :mad: What is your problem with ASIA anyways, You always seems to have bad comments about ASIA. This is a "PROFESSIONAL PILOTS RUMOURS NETWORK" (PPRUNE), We discuss things and make jokes about AIRLINES not about ASIA. sheesshh...... If you don't like it in Asia then dont be a part of it? Simple as that. I'm sorry if i was being too harsh or rude. Relax and don't be so uptight!

Patrick you're a nut! You have a multitude of great airlines in Europe to work for.
Once you get some experience and time on type you can always apply to CX or SIA. The long and short is that you will not get a job there unless you have a type rating and preferably some wide body time.
When I started my career as a flight instructor I worked for Aeronautx USA. I'm sure you are familiar with the Austrian Flight School. I worked for them in the States as a senior flight Instructor and company check airman. We trained self sponsored Austrian and German student pilots as well as "selected" Tyrolean student pilots. Some of my students that were selected by Tyrolean now fly the Fokker 100, Dash-8 400Q and the CRJ. All great airplanes and with a good company.
I grew up in Singapore and my father was a 747 Captain SQ before I was born, until the day he retired. I watched him work for SIA and I thought "great, that's what I want to do". I wanted to fly a heavy for a major airline. I only realised once I got into the career that I was watching my father long after his career began. I did not get to see him start as a bush pilot in South America. What I realised is that it is a long road and sometimes it takes many baby steps to get there to the big boeing or Airbus. It would be nice to land a job flying a heavy Jet first time off but it's not realistic.
There are quite a few airlines in Europe doing selections including Tyrolean. Ask around and find out about them.

Patrick, lots of good advice but you must get in time in europe of the states. I know that the low cost carrier in uk take on low hour f/o and am told some are from furmer eastern states. It would be good start way but not sure of minimum hours they want. Maybe set message on page that covers them

HI,

In order to vacate all misunderstandings I am a 18 year old student and I will finish school in one year.
Then after the military I will start my pilot education at an airlines "AUSTRIAN AIRLINES and LUFTHANSA" are my favourit airlines for an education. They only take recruits with no experience to teach them they like.
So my question was is there any other airline which teach their pilots like AUSTRIAN AIRLINES or LUFTHANSA??

dear patrick,

i'm asian, and it's lovely here. don't get wrong ideas. however i would have to STRESS that is is VERY different. everything is different. but then again, if it weren't different, it wouldn't be attractive in the first place.

good luck. mh i believe does not take cadets of non locals. best bet is sq, cx
but be prepared for serious competition.
