which is the best type rating to get?

Just wondering what the consesus out there is on type raings. If you payed for your own type would you go for a B737 or A320 type rating?

Can't speak for the rest of the world but Asia is screaming for A320 drivers. In Singapore, there are Tiger Air, SilkAir, Jetstar Asia - Valuair and, just up the road, Air Asia - all A320 operators. That list doesn't include Kinfisher (India) and others.

In Europe, the majority of potential employers that require a type rating are 737 operators.

However, if you are willing to fund a type rating, you'd be better off securing an offer of employment to go with it.

easyJet, Ryanair (last resort!!), Jet2 and BMI Baby all run schemes where you are offered employment on the basis of funding the type rating.

Astraeus also run a type + line training deal which MIGHT lead to employment if you do the right thing.

I was considering applying to BMI Baby ............. but from reading this it would appear that they want you to fund your own TR ......... is this true ? If so I'll be holding off on that one !!:ugh:

I hear lots of stories about the airbus gaining market in the next 3 years. Could be true, i dont know. But looking at orders you might wanna consider the airbus rating.

Unless you have a job lined up after your type rating - a self sponsored type rating with no hours on type is useless !!!

Search around, most airlines ask for at least 500 hrs on type these days.

I have operated the 737 / 320 and am now on the 330, if you have 20k + as pocket change i'd say go for the 737, it is easier and more manual flying. The airbus is to complicated for a self funded rating and most if not all airbus operators will ask for at least 500 hrs on type within 12 months !

All the talk is about A320 or B737 self-sponsored ratings. Does anyone have any views/knowledge about the usefulness of a King Air or Citation TR without time on type?
