I understand that the debate about the value of a degree in aviation has been done to death before.

However, the 'value' of a degree is different in the context of Singapore. Especially so in the aviation field.

The reasons for such are

1) Singapore does not have many avenues to build flight hours. It is pretty much directly enter SIA or nothing.

2) Strong emphasis on qualifications: degree -> higher chances with a job with SIA with minimum hours?

The discussions about the importance of a degree in the forums have had been rather general. I would like this topic to focus on the importance of a degree in the Singaporean context of aviation.

I plan to do my CPL/IR. However, I was thinking of either doing it together with a degree course, or just the flight training alone. If I were to pursue a degree cum flight, it would probably take an extra two years and another 140k or more. Do take the opportunity cost into account.

I hope fellow Singaporeans here with the experience and anyone in the know would enlighten me. If the degree makes that much a difference with minimum hours to get a flying job with SIA. I know of people with degree and minimum flight hours getting flying jobs with SIA, i was wondering does anyone know of someone who without a degree but with the bare minimum training hours, got a flying job with SIA.

All comments are welcomed.

Sadly it seems to be the case in this island nation. But don't be discouraged from learning to fly because of this.

Working on a professional pilot's licence is an entirely different matter from getting work as a pilot at SIA, or any other airline.

The main significance is whether you already have the basic flight qualifications when you make your job application. This may truly be an advantage.

However there is absolutely no guarantee that your application to SIA will be successful even with a degree, or with xxxx hours of flying experience.

CPL/IR? CPL/IR, plus a degree?

You must make a timely 'command' decision based on available resources and accurate information.

And yes.. though rarely publicised, but it's true. Someone without a degree but with the bare minimum training hours, DID GET a flying job with SIA.

Just like to add.. Do check out training programmes and prices at various flying schools.

Also came across a school that other day.

Website is www.southernstar-alliance.com or something like that...

Good luck!
