job opportunities for female pilots

im an 18 year-old malaysian girl and ive always dreamt of becoming a pilot. ive read other posts here and it seems it will take a lot of money to be one. i dont come from a rich family so paying my way might prove a challenge.

id just like to know, what are the opportunities for a female (cadet?) pilot, in say malaysia airlines?

-to note i have perfect eyesight and i would probably pass the exams, but ive read here its very competitive so a good resume might not be all that important anyway?-

Not being a professional my experience is somewhat limited. However I meet alot of trainees and jobseekers, so I have a rough idea of who's getting the jobs.

I know a young lady who was doing her FIC at my school, and started a job PPL instructing the week she finished. A week later, Flybe gave her half a week's notice before she started her 146 type rating.

Compared to many, she has been extremely fortunate. I know males who have spent spent spent, and are scraping a living with three jobs and have had plenty of rejections (including from Flybe), despite doing the same courses in the same place at the same time.

Either it was a case of right place right time, or some places have quotas to fill, in which case your chances would be improved.

FEMALE CADET PILOT



Requirements:

Malaysian citizen, aged between 18-26 as at date of application.
Pass SPM or its equivalent qualification recognised by the Malaysian government with six (06) credits including Bahasa Malaysia and a minimum of B4 in Mathematics, Physics and English taken at one sitting.
OR
Possess Diploma / Degree in Engineering or Science related disciplines with CGPA 3.0 and above and six (6) credits with a pass in Bahasa Malaysia in SPM.
Good command of Bahasa Malaysia and English both written and spoken.
Medically and physically fit with perfect eyesight and visual acuity of at least 6 / 60 without optical aid, correctable to 6 / 6 and not colour blind.
Not less than 163cm (5ft 4in) in height.
Prepared to undergo vigorous training up to twenty (20) months.
Prepared to sign training bond.

of course it really helps if you have someone in the company.

but i'm guessing, now is a good time to apply. MAS is in need for female pilots. i'm guessing to show air asia they can do it too.

the only way you will be a pilot and stay a pilot is to have the right reasons to be a pilot. not money, not travelling, not fame, not the girls (or in your case guys), the reason is the love of flying and aircraft. be forewarned, flying is not all flowers and candy as it seems from the outside. from the time you get in your 1st cockpit, till the time you leave the company or your retirement day, it is all hardwork and stress. there is no 2 ways about it. the dream is important. where there is a will there is a way.



on another note, what the hell is with calling uniforms a benefit? that aint no benefit. if i could fly wearing my shorts, t-shirt, and slippers, THAT would be a benefit. damn MAS..

Go apply MAS!!! You will be the pioneer female pilot in the country. MAS is very short of pilots and uner alot of pressure to recruit female cadets.

MAS's cadets has very good standard.It is proven that alot of MAS pilots can get jobs overseas and many in management.

They are so short of pilots in Malaysia but being typical Malay thinking, pilots have to be male because we dont have rest quaters for female pilots....I could have sworn that MAS cabin crew were female too? Or are they ladyboys?

Why does Air Asia have to do it before MAS will even consider employing female cadets?

I guess that's what you get from a company run by Malays...:} :}

Go for it. Dont worry about the money. I too came from a poor family, but after successful application, MAS took me in and sent me for training. My parents didnt have to spend anything really.

Recently, MAS has had a change of mind regarding female pilots. A few years ago it was a no no. Reason, MAS passengers not ready for female pilots. Strange because at that time, MAS was leasing a World Airways DC10 crewed by females (Capt, FO and FE). We also was leasing a 737-400 from UK Air Leasure which has a few female FOs.

Now MAS is playing catch up. The M'sian government is also putting a lot of emphasis on women nowadays. You read about them being the 1st chief justice, head of this and that. They even have a women minister looking after women affairs. Women in high profile jobs are the in thing in Msia.

When I first flew with a female pilot, I was nervous and rightfully told her so. She turned around to me and said " Capt, treat me as your copilot, not as a female and you'll be alright". Indeed, I followed her advise and we had a good flight. Since then I have flown with a few more (including female captains) and I have found them to be competent and good operators indeed. No difference as when I am flying with guys, except that I have to watch those expletives when I am with the ladies. And so far, nothing has happened during those inflight rests in the bunk (really).

Connections are not important, as we have rejected candidates with good connections too. But connection does help get your application to the right people. Connections or not you still have to pass your MISPA, medical and aptitude test.

In my opinion, MAS should have employed female pilots long long ago and be pioneers instead of playing catch up.

I m not sure I agree with the bit saying its easier for a female to get a job but nevermind.

I enjoy flying and although I haven t done that much yet I know it was the career for me.

Its hard work but if you have the passion then you ll succeed.

As for MAS, I m glad they weren t the pioneers other wise I wouldn t be working for Air Asia now.

thanks a lot guys, for everything really. i did apply to MAS and have since received a letter to sit the psychomotor test (tomorrow). ive been told that it will be a simple coordination/navigation test and hope to pass. thanks again for everything

Shintaro 9 , I think you will find that when MAS damp-leased a 737-400 from Air UK leisure about 1990-92 , they were very dismayed to find that one (or more ? ) of the aircrew supplied was a female. She was promptly dispatched back to the UK.
It is very pleasing therefore to see them now trying to train/employ female pilots at last. I only worry that some of the trainers / captains they come up against will be from the old school.Hope not.

Sorry brother. I could not recall at anytime MH have 737-400 female pilot whether she is F/O or captain. I was there. It did not materialised. As for the World Airways contract, the planes were leased with their own cockpit crew which at a few occasions, I have seen female cockpit crew at the ODC.

As far as the crew bunk is concern, as long as you keep your hands to yourself there should not be a problem. If the cabin crew can share the bunk during their rest hour, I don't see why cockpit crew can't do the same. I have a few female pilots on my long haul fleet. I don't see any problem. The problem arise when you created one.

Learn to ignore all the prejudice. If you really want it then go for it and don't be stopped by "we don't usually" or "it's not normal" or "you would be the first". As a women, don't ever ask to be or expect to be treated any differently in the cockpit.

Dont worry, many people fail the 1st test. Keep applying again and your name will be queued up again. Cooling period about a year though.

In '74 when we applied, there was no such tests. All we had to do was continously pat our forehead with the left hand palm, while rubbing our abs (in those days they were abs, now ponch) with our right hand palm in a circular motion. After a few times, change hands. If you can do this, you'll be alright.

In the mean time play some computer flt simulation games that makes you practise some form of coordination.

Don't give up! Keep applying and try again and again if flying is the thing you what to do. I know some guys tried 8 times before getting in and now captain on the 737. Even it took a few years to become cadet,it is all worth it.

Sorry to hear that you didn't make it. However, you shouldn't give up if flying is really your passion. As aforementioned above, many people couldn't make it through until their x'th attempt. Just keep on trying til' you make it. I know that what airline companies really need now are determined, passionate pilots (Regardless of gender) to fly for them. Prove that you're one of them! ladies.....i dont think they will take in female. we're talking about MAS right. i mean...i dont wasste my time applying there(and yes...im a female). i think they already have 10 of my resumes. and maybe half in the trash can. so...on...i apply to AK and TH. going for my interview with ak on the 2nd.
