I have been offered a position as an F/O with CAL and although I have been reluctant to accept because of what I have read here I am currently not working. I was curious if anyone knew how hard it is to get out of the contract without costing my first born child, keeping in mind the potential of return to TPE with another airline. Thanks

Out of curiosity, why would you want to leave CAL and deal with training bond issue just to work for another airline out of TPE?

The other potential airline would not be based out of TPE but do operate flights into TPE from another location.

IT WILL TAKE YOU MUCH LONGER THAN 5 YEARS TO BE PROMOTED AT CAL. POSSIBLY NEVER.

I know that if you were to break a bond with SIA in Singapore and they knew you were back in the country with another operator they would nab you and invite you to pay the balance. It has happened! Likewise companies won't be very impressed if they lose a pilot from a crew at an out staion due to non payment of bond, a friend in BA was called in to the office and told he would have to settle his bond with Singapore before he could do his B744 course, all very civilised and friendly from BA but essential just the same.

Not sure if CAL operate a bond system but if you do leave be sure to clear all your debts, electricity, 'phone etc. etc.

Taking a wild guess.....you are a jetsgo "victim" and have an opportunity with Cal, but might have the opportunity with another outfit. If this outfit is CX then I wouldn't touch Cal. If your lucky enough to get into CX from Jetsgo, then take it and run. Cal is a different story and doesn't make it to the best employers of the year. Ever. Especially as an F/O. Take the job if you must but fasten your seatbelt........but I would wait for another option, especially if the other company is CX.

I hear Gulf Air might be an option for some? I would try Emirates if you're in that part of the world. Also, Air Canada should start hiring by the end of the year.

Good luck

Get it straight once and for all.
The idea at CAL is to get foreign pilots in the cockpit to aid safety.
Preferably they want their own in the left seat.
They only want to promote the local pilots and hope to be national in 10 years.
They have a bond as well as a penalty system for breaking a contract. One co pilot left recently after one year of the three year bond. They wanted twice the original bond to release him.
This guy told me that if he stayed, it would take him 7 years to get into the "promotion pool". In the promotion pool, he would be by- passed by every local pilot who entered it. Locals get in the pool with about 3000 hours.
You don't stand a chance.
The qualifications are not honoured by JAA, Sing CAA ( I have tried) and probably every other ICAO state. FAA may accept.
Go to CX , Dragon or the Singapore based operators and never look back.
