View Full Version : Right Hand Seat Charters

Hello Chaps/Chapesses,

I am not sure whether I am posting this is the right forum, but I will give it a shot.

Does anybody know of any air charter companies that welcome inexperienced commercial pilots to sit in the right hand seat on single crew IFR operations? This type of flying really appeals to me, and would love to gain the commercial experience of flying charters within Europe. Currently I am studying for my FI rating, but would give up some of my time to act as a safety pilot purely for the valuable experience. My instincts tell me there will be alot of newly qualified professional pilots lining up for this sort of thing, but it was just a thought as I am very keen and enthusiastic.

Any views or advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Mike,

Thanks for taking the time out to post. I like your ability to spot the LAT and LONG position!!

All the best.

Hi

There is normally a bit of a queue. You need to find your most local operator, be willing to drop everything last minute. On the really light stuff, Seneca's etc you will be able to log the empty sectors, unless the type rated / line checked guy is hours building too (and lets face it how many Seneca jockeys aren't hours building.

Good luck

And these days if you're up the front I think it'll be difficult for you to be there without some company training (Fire, Smoke, CRM etc etc etc etc etc etc.........!!)

Dai,

The empty sectors are not public transport, so no fire / first aid / wet drill etc.

Just a check out by the aircraft owner to make sure he is happy you are able to fly the aircraft safely.

Phil, I thought that even the empty sectors couldn't be logged as they are in fact still comercial positioning flights, unless of course it was say for to/from maintenance? The charter operator will still have made a charge to the punter for these empty legs?

Capt. Sparrow is technically correct, but I'll go along with Phil on the grey area allowing it.

But wouldn't like to put it to the test with an unfriendly (never!) CAA Ramp Inspection!

The way the grey area was explained to me ny a CAA guru was that the CAA would consider the positioning sector to be Air Work, I think the concern of the CAA is that an unscrupulous operator could use the safety pilot positioning and depositioning the flight to extend the FDP of the pilot operating the live sectors.
