Tolsti has been offered a job working in Bangkok (not aviation related). Just waiting for papers to get a B1 visa then I'm off. 1st month accomodation is provided but any hints as to a pleasant and reasonably cheap area to live in thereafter?
Budget 20-30 000 Baht

All help appreciated

Tolsti,

It depends on your personal circumstances. If you have a family, then we may want to live closer to the city.

20-30K is more than sufficient for a very nice apartment in a nice area or even a house if you are prepared to live a little way out of the centre.

PM me when you get here and I’ll try to give you what help I can

How about where to go and what to do in BKK as I have been assigned both a Christmas and a new years lay over there.
First time in BKK for me...

Remembering that as Xmas and New Year’s Day are normal working days here, everything is open as usual. Bangkok is actually decorated pretty nice for Xmas and of course it is warm.

There is something here to cater for everyone’s tastes, all at very affordable prices. Suggest a little research on the web would be very beneficial.

Enjoy

I used to live at the Gran Hi Tech Towers off Ekamai. I thought it was quite nice, right on the klong so getting around was fairly easy - the area was relatively quiet as well. For 20-30000 baht you could get a nicely furnished 1 bedroom place with separate kitchen and living area, internet, etc. Before that I had a place off Nakhorn Chaisi Road - it was popular with UN guys and that was fairly nice too - lots of expats which made living in a foreign city a little easier at times.

Anyway, for 20-30000 you should be able to find a somewhat decent place in the city with gym, pool, fully furnished, etc. If you type into google - serviced apartments bangkok - you will find loads of info and websites of places.

As for places to go at New Years - my favorite area is Siam Square - though it all really depends what you're after. I spent New Years at the Hard Rock Cafe - real mix of Thai and expats, great live bands, friendly staff, dancing on the bar - one of the better nights out. There are a lot of other options if you want to stay away from the "typical bangkok haunts" ie Patpong, Nana, Soi Cowboy - head to the RCA strip - lots of bars or to places like Q Bar or Bed supperclub, all favorites of mine and you won't be hassled by working girls!

Have fun
