Hi all
I purchased a laptop in the united stated , the computer was always able to play dvd's from both america and europe not a problem . Recently after reinstalling windows xp back on to my lap top due to a virus problem I can no longer play american dvd's , can anybody help me sort this litle poblem . thanks any input is appreciated....
Just to add to my post the problem with the dvd playback is nothing to do with the virus problem , the virus problem was the reason that I reinstalled xp but the setup seems to have changed now on the dvd player ?

wolfman-2000,
It sounds like you need region free DVD Firmware. This is a great place to start:
The Firmware Page Portal (http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php)

wolfman-2000,
Firmware is just software that removes the region coding from your DVD Drive. ;)

I use this prog, it acts as a buffer between your DVD player software.
You run the DVD vrom this little prog.
Google search to locate.
Sorry don't have time to find URL.

Hi Wolfman,
I had exactly the same problem as you a while back. After re-installing windows, I had the same message given.
I'm pretty sure that you will find that the dvd decoder program (win dvd, intervideo dvd, etc) is not on your windows recovery disk. Check all the disks that came with your laptop, and hopefully you will find a "utilities" disk. This usually has manufacturer specific programs (power saver, dvd progs etc).
Hope this helps

thanks thats exactly the problem , im missing programs that were there before I cleaned the harddrive , I was sure I loaded everything that came with the computer back in but ill check again to see if there is a utility disc that has slipped past me .
also thanks to Richard ive tried both of these with no luck there must be a dvd program that comes with my hewellet/p laptop that I have miss placed like the utility disc that 419 mentioned ..

wolfman-2000,
Then try contacting HP and see if they have a download or maybe they might even send you the CD with the utilities.
