Flying Off Into the Wild Blue Yonder
Molouk Y. Ba-Isa, Arab News

Prince Sultan ibn Salman initiated the idea to establish an aviation club in Saudi Arabia that would offer a variety of aviation activities to serve Saudi citizens and residents. The Saudi Aviation Club (www.sac.com.sa), based in Riyadh, is well-established now and ready to move forward with expansion plans.

According to the Saudi Aviation Club’s Executive Director, Capt. Ahmed M. Al-Juhani, the club has leased two airports — Thumama and Rabigh — from the government. They hope to open a skydiving school in the next two to three months at Thumama. The club has also put out an RFP to several international flight training schools worldwide to establish a flight training school in Saudi Arabia. Such a school would enable Saudis to study for the private pilot’s license needed to fly small planes.

The Saudi Aviation Club already has a number of activities under way including paragliding in Abha and Taif and paramotoring in Riyadh and Jeddah. In December, the club will be participating in the 4th Jeddah International Skydiving Championship.

Capt. Al-Juhani said the club is currently wrapping up meetings with various government ministries focusing on the private purchase of certain types of aviation equipment in the Kingdom, in particular the equipment for paragliding. Capt. Al-Juhani encourages all interested individuals resident in Saudi Arabia to join the club and participate in its aviation activities — even spectators are welcome.

Picture those nice little Yahoo emoticons of a guy rolling around the floor laughing........... thats me right now.

The Jeddah side of the SAC doesnt exist, the 10 aircraft are sitting rotting in the summer heat, no one maintaining them nor flying them, the reason for this, greed!!!!:mad:

As for a photographers group, never could work out how a country where photography is banned almost everywhere has the 2nd largest number of one-hour-photo-developing machines in the world!

Mutt. :)
