At http://www.airlinecodes.co.uk/callsign.asp is (apparently) a list of all ICAO airline callsigns in use at the moment.

If one wanted a callsign for a new airline, how would one go about getting one ?

One should request it with a buro (it think in Toronto) they have you fill out a form which gives you the choice of three callsigns. 1,2 and 3.

Then they'll do some research to see if it is allready in use. If the other company flies regional flights on the other side of the world it's still possible you'll get the callsign as long as there is no chance of confusion.

I don't really remember it as it is a long time ago for me. But I think there was an ICAO?? office in Canada or the USA..

Ofcourse all callsign that are  not acceptable.

There most certainly is! The headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) are in Montreal, Canada. Big building downtown with many offices and conference halls (I think I even sat on the chief's chair!).

I believe that you have to contact NATS in the UK in the first instance. At least, that used to be the way.

Not that I wish to appear pedantic, but I think it's the CAA that you need to contact in the UK.

As I recall, each Country decides whether a callsign can be allocated (so long as it's not used elsewhere, potentially confusing or offensive it should be OK) and then notify it to ICAO. I guess ICAO can reject a notification but I've never heard of it happening.

Used to be go and apply to local CAA who have the first say and then formerly request/register the callsign and ID with ICAO...used to be a nice guy at Kingsway here in UK

Thanks for the pointers, gents.

The CAA website has this FAQ (http://www.caa.co.uk/srg/aircraft_register/faq.asp?faqid=337) which leads to AIC 69/2002 / White 60 (http://www.ais.org.uk/aes/pubs/aip/pdf/aic/4W060.PDF) which details the steps required.

If / when the callsign(s) have been allocated, I'll let you know !
