Polar flights & survival equipment

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know what the regs are regarding polar survival equipment??

To be more specific, I had a Global Express operating EGGW - KLAX, routing well above the arctic circle, and the crew were not sure about the legal requirements, and when you must have such equipment on board.

Aircraft is operating under Part-91.

Hi Buzzz...
The only trustworthy answer that you'll get will be the one from the handling provider that the crew will be using. I'd get a hold of the folks at Universal or any of the several other handling/planning companies - they do this kind of stuff for a living and they're good at it. They won't steer you wrong.

I always thought that captain will know. Why start asking around from handlers?
Just as a hint, FAR 91 do not require very much...

Reminds me - In the late 80’s I flew with Thai International Bangkok, Tokyo, San Franciso. In the seat pockets, apart from the usual, was a nicely packaged bright orange survival overall made from metalised material. This surprised me as I’d never seen this before, or since. Looking at the globe the route would have taken the flight ‘parallel’ to the Aleutian Islands. I can only think that the diversion airfields didn’t have pax handling of any sort and the suits were the option to a heated lounge. Another odd thing about this flight was the huge amount of catering on board. Many seat rows in the lower forward area had been removed for extra catering equipment. Again, perhaps, to feed all on board during an extended diversion.

But then again I was flying Bangkok, Tokyo, San Franciso (or LAX) fairly regularly with Pan Am, (later United) and SIA, and they didn’t seem to bother with anything other than the ordinary. Anybody in the region at the time recognise what I’m talking about ???

I ferried a Citation2 through the artic a few years back. The FAR/AIM book should outline all you require. Back then it was little more than a raft in part 91. But you may want to take more :cool:
