Good Morning, I was flying with a friend on saturday who has come back to flying after a six year lay off with around 24 hours of PPL training, he has recommenced his training, my question is, do the hours count after a gap of six years?

Six Years would mean he did the 24 Hours before September 2012. Hours flown before EASA cannot be counted towards an initial licence.
You can get an exemption until the end op September, but he would have to do everything in the next 2 weeks...

Note that the 30 Sep 2017 date in [IN-2017/012] is the absolute end date for acceptance of training conducted before 17 Sep 2012 and that it will not be extended.
The only solution for pilots unable to complete the Skill Test before 30 Sep 2017 will be to apply for an NPPL. But that will have to be obtained before 8 Apr 2018 if it is subsequently to be converted to a Part-FCL LAPL or PPL in order to fly EASA aircraft...

Thank you for the responses, it all makes sense now and I would agree that after 6 years it's better to start afresh!
At least he has the experience which may keep the hours neded to a minimum.
