Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

Honourable Company of Air Pilots - Flying Instructor Scholarship

Dear Ppruners,

I have been lucky enough to secure an interview for a flying instrcuctor scholarship. I was wondering if anyone has experienced an interview with HCAP, and what questions the board asks, and also if anyone can give me any information as what to expect? I would like to be as prepared as possible for the interview.

Kind regards, K

I had a feeling that they put you through OASC Cranditz. But I might be wrong.

Oh no :-/ ... thanks for your reply. What questions do they ask at Cranwell?

I think the OASC selection tests were only for the JN Somers Scholarship (for CPL/IR with fATPL) and the PPL scholarships; I don't believe it is used for the FI scholarship.

I helped someone going for the flying scholarship with HCAP last year. I think a good starter for 10 is finding out about HCAP in detail. You need to try to contact past winners (see HCAP website). they'll be glad to help (and you can mention you spoke to them in the interview). Then you need your motivations down pat and how you plan to move forward in your aviation career. They are looking for someone who is going to give back more than they put in. Good luck, don't be late

Wow, what a positive view (which you toned down from the first version this morning). I take it you were rejected before the interview! Those that donate to the scholarship could just as well keep the cash. Sure, the process probably isn't 100% fair but I doubt any process is. The person I helped got feedback so perhaps you never asked.

There are three or four people on the panel. They are a mix of military / civilian backgrounds, reflecting the membership of the HCAP.

It's worth knowing your CPL theory. Be prepared to be able to answer random questions about anything covered in the theoretical knowledge.

Know about the HCAP. Know about what's involved in flight instruction; who are the students? What are they like, what do they need, what's the expectation.

Be confident in how to interview in an evidence-based way using examples from your own personal experience.

Prepare your presentation thoroughly. Make it interesting and don't be afraid to make it fun.

The panel are there to get the best from you, so remember that. They're good people with a huge amount of experience, so their advice and feedback is relevant whichever way it goes for you.

Good luck! And if it's something you're passionate about, don't let a set-back this time stop you from following your goal.
