Ethiopian CAA

Did anybody have bad experiences with the Ethiopian CAA in obtaining landing or overflying permissions ?

I Find them quite lousy !

They won't grant permissions for any Cargo / passenger flights with load or pax for the UN unless permit requests goes through Diplomatic channels

They won't grant permissions to land even for tech if you are heading to a country they don't like (Eritrea for example)

Easiest thing they would say : APPLY VIA DIPLOMATIC CHANNELS !!

Even for a ferry flight aiming for a tech stop just for fuel and a 1 hour ground time !?!?!?!?!?!

Finally they wouldn't give any good reasons they would just hang up the phone with out any explanations !

No need to speak of the corruption, when you send a request and the guy answering the phone says we didn't get the request, please send it to the agent Zebra Aviation and passes you their email !

Quite unprofessional !

One of the worst in Africa !

Africa clearances

Good day,

The Cie I'm working for (Ops support in Africa) has yet some problems in dealing with African CAA's on permits.
Some are very easy cos they use appropriate communications means (eg: Algeria and others) and well educated staff.
Some others have very heavy administrative networks and permits rely only on the CAA Manager or other administrative office (eg: D.R.C.) or permit requests have to be very specifically filled in according state regulations on Regular, Charter, Private, State flights (eg: Ethiopia, Kenya).

As some CAA's staff have to make extra workload for transmiting or filling applications, they request a "gesture to thank" from the operator.

SU-GCM

you got it spot on - this is the case of most CAA in the Africa and ME, with so many support companies out there they need to generate $$ and the only way they know how is use any form of corruption to push their agenda!!

Good luck trying to get your permits even handling services in order it is becoming worse every year.

(I remember 20 years ago all it took was send in AFTN message and you get your permit back - without calling and $$$$ under the table)
