Career advice needed

Evening all,

I have desired a career in aviation for a long time and I am more determined than ever to make something happen. However, I was hoping you guys may be able to help me understand the options open to me. I have a good business and economics degree behind me and a few years work experience post-university (not aviation related). I worked at a flying school when I was younger (part time and voluntarily) as I couldn't afford to fly but wanted to learn.

On paper, I have good job but it doesn't seem like something I can do for another 12 months let alone til retirement! So, I would love to follow my heart into aviation

I hear about flight ops, flight scheduling and other roles but I don't truly understand what each role does, in detail.

Is anyone able to help me to understand what types of roles may be open to me and give me a steer as to what the roles genuinely entail.

Sorry I can't give more detail but I am open to career suggestions!

Thanks so much in advance

I'm quite a few years out of the 'office' but there is bags of experience on here to give you the info you need that'll be more up to date than I can give!

A few thoughts, maybe have a look at aviation related courses at London Met Uni. Not sure where in the UK you are or age but the larger airlines in the UK maybe offer graduate positions and much opportunities - BA/easyJet/Jet2 - my airline is big on this, it's good to see, they offer an excellent opportunity to cadet pilots that gives them airline experience before they get to fly without stinging them for outrageous amounts of money!

But thats London, Luton and Leeds though, so be prepared to get your head around aviation is all about travel! Something to think about if you have a family!

Thanks for your input, I am very grateful.

I'm 30 and I live in Cheshire. Due to family commitments a relocation is highly unlikely but Manchester is close enough and Liverpool is commutable.

I want to continue to work, ideally my studious days are in my past, though something part time, if sufficiently beneficial, would be worthy of consideration.

Hopefully this helps people to provide more advice.

Cheers

Waco - you can't even make a decent cup of tea which is the No1 requirement of an Ops job/career..
I would say stay where you are if you have a good job, if you move to airlines its normally starting at the bottom, temp contracts etc. Have you thought about Cabin Crew i.e. BA.
Failing that i'd do the next best thing - rubber necking, even Waco did that, or was that Trains can't remember

Back to School

With your business/economics degree that you mentioned then JB007's advice is spot on. There are several part-time executive MBa/MSc courses available at accredited UK based Uni's. Many of these courses qualify for various gov relief schemes.

These Uni's are well known in the industry with leads into the airlines, leasing houses and manufacturers; they're well connected when it comes to placing new grads and finding a job is rarely a problem.

This is a much better route than taking an entry level job and would open up numerous, rewarding career opportunities in fields you never even knew existed.

All you have to do is explore the option.

All the best to you.
