Hi all,

We're trying to fit a rather large ferry tank to a C182Q. This exact thing is done all the time in the US, and has been for the last 40+ years. It costs a few thousand bucks.

The few quotes we've been able to get from UK engineering companies are in the region of £25,000. A mere 10+ times the US cost; I know flying is different here and there, but that really just takes the p***.

Does anyone know of a way of getting our pathetic aviation authority into the 21st century with regard to something like this - or a less bone-headed European country who could do the work?

If not, we'll stick it on the N-Reg, and the cash-grabbing CAA will get precisely nothing.

Has anyone had any real-world, 1st hand experience of flying piper lances, both t-tail and non t-tail? Specifically, I'm interested to hear about handling, loading, useful load and speeds from people who have experience on type (as opposed to bar room pundits who "once heard a nasty story from a man in a bar") or fantasist trolls who witter on about mooneys or cirruses.

And before anyone points it out I realise that much of what I ask should be in the POH, but I wanted some 'real world' feedback as opposed to the party line...

Risk of spinning from a sideslip?

What is the risk of converting a badly judged sideslip into a spin? I have been practising sideslipping under instruction (so far from a safe height) but no-one seems to be able to answer this question to my satisfaction. In a sideslip, you have an airplane out of balanced flight, full rudder, a raised nose attitude and unreliable airspeed indication. Prime risk factors for a spin I would have thought and at circuit height, which is where most folk use a sideslip for real, unrecoverable. Nonetheless all the pundits who fly "real" airplanes advise using a slideslip from time to time, and it always comes out in advice on forced landings. Advice from anyone with experience would be welcome. Thanks.

Have looked in the AIM can't find answer to the following. Does he need an FAA BFR before licence is valid, or is it valid on issue and BFR not required for two years?

Basically, my flying club is trying to arrange a christmas fly out to a German Market. The place they have chosen is called AAchen and the local airfield I believe is called Merzbruck, however I am having some difficulty finding anything out about the airfield (other than on their website, which of course is in German!). Therefore, firstly has anyone ever in fact visited this place? Secondly, does anyone know of an AIP for Germany available on the Internet? And finally, can anyone think of any special regulations when flying in Germany in comparison to the UK? I heard a rumor Mode S transponders were compulsory.

thanks
