I was amazed, when looking at the clip featuring HM the Queen, presenting the new standard to 43(F) Sqn in 1957, how little the base has changed !
Just type your curiosity into the search box, and it's off to a byegone era...

OK, this is probably going to raise some hackles and cause some lively debate but here goes!
Having been a regular viewer of this esteemed website for a number of years with occasional postings, I have noticed that in recent times (last 6 months or so) there seems to be a lot threads being posted which, at best, have a tenuous link to Mil Aviation and Aircrew (yes, I know what the forum says and that it invites the 'backroom' boys and girls etc).

I would imagine (and happy to be corrected) that most people come into this forum for information relating to "Military Aviation". It just seems to me that there is a whole plethora of posts of late that are just placed because they have some loose connection with the military. Nine times out of ten, they are posts of media articles which we all know are quite often inaccurate. This inevitably leads to debate, heated discussion and quite often descends into arguments and occasionally personal attacks. Does this not feed straight back into the hands of certain elements of the media who we know regularly read and extract snippets from these pages?

I am all for a healthy discussion and debate on a relevant topic but quite often it ends up so far left or right of field, the original topic is lost and it becomes a farce!

There are some fantastic threads in here that are informative and useful for anyone seeking the latest Mil aviation information and gossip. However, there also seems to be a growing amount of "let's all get fired up and outraged about a story that is in the papers (therefore must be true!)" threads. Would these not be more suitable in another forum. ie Jet Blast etc?

I would dare to say that although the Moderators keep an eye on the forum to make sure there is nothing illegal or damaging posted, they are not necessarily keen to move every thread otherwise they will be accused of overt censorship.

So, after all that, my question for the readership is:

Do you think the Mil Aviation forum has become too much of a general discussion and debating forum rather than an informative aviation one where

Quote:

can come to seek and swap relevant information?

Tin hat on, awaiting incoming!
*No smart alec answers about this being a discussion thread please, it is directly related to the forum title!

Former soldier who handed a discarded shotgun in to police faces at least five years imprisonment for "doing his duty".
Paul Clarke, 27, was found guilty of possessing a firearm at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday – after finding the gun and handing it personally to police officers on March 20 this year.
The jury took 20 minutes to make its conviction, and Mr Clarke now faces a minimum of five year's imprisonment for handing in the weapon.
In a statement read out in court, Mr Clarke said: "I didn't think for one moment I would be arrested.
"I thought it was my duty to hand it in and get it off the streets."
The court heard how Mr Clarke was on the balcony of his home in Nailsworth Crescent, Merstham, when he spotted a black bin liner at the bottom of his garden.

In his statement, he said: "I took it indoors and inside found a shorn-off shotgun and two cartridges.
"I didn't know what to do, so the next morning I rang the Chief Superintendent, Adrian Harper, and asked if I could pop in and see him.
"At the police station, I took the gun out of the bag and placed it on the table so it was pointing towards the wall."
Mr Clarke was then arrested immediately for possession of a firearm at Reigate police station, and taken to the cells.

Defending, Lionel Blackman told the jury Mr Clarke's garden backs onto a public green field, and his garden wall is significantly lower than his neighbours.
He also showed jurors a leaflet printed by Surrey Police explaining to citizens what they can do at a police station, which included "reporting found firearms".
Quizzing officer Garnett, who arrested Mr Clarke, he asked: "Are you aware of any notice issued by Surrey Police, or any publicity given to, telling citizens that if they find a firearm the only thing they should do is not touch it, report it by telephone, and not take it into a police station?"
To which, Mr Garnett replied: "No, I don't believe so."
Prosecuting, Brian Stalk, explained to the jury that possession of a firearm was a "strict liability" charge – therefore Mr Clarke's allegedly honest intent was irrelevant.
Just by having the gun in his possession he was guilty of the charge, and has no defence in law against it, he added.
But despite this, Mr Blackman urged members of the jury to consider how they would respond if they found a gun.
He said: "This is a very small case with a very big principle.
"You could be walking to a railway station on the way to work and find a firearm in a bin in the park.
"Is it unreasonable to take it to the police station?"
Paul Clarke will be sentenced on December 11.
Judge Christopher Critchlow said: "This is an unusual case, but in law there is no dispute that Mr Clarke has no defence to this charge.
"The intention of anybody possessing a firearm is irrelevant."

What actually is the rule these days? I thought that one of Incapability Brown's utterances was that military personnel should be encouraged to wear uniform in public nowadays?

Back in the 1950s, I'm told that a weary tank crew on exercise went into a German pub for a cold beer. Only to be told "We do not serve British soldiers in this pub". The tank crew left quietly; shortly afterward the noise of an engine and squealing of tracks was heard, followed by the crash of breaking glass as the tank's gun was traversed through the pub window. The occupants of the pub wisely legged it; shortly afterwards a blank round was fired into the pub, shattering every bottle and glass in the place.... When the dust had settled the tank commander reappeared and announced to the dazed pub keeper "You won't be serve ****ing anyone in this pub now, will you Fritz!"

Germany to Cut Eurofighter Order

What a surprise. Hard sell after we got into the market first....

Germany To Cut Eurofighter Order, Seek Exports...

What a surprise. Hard sell after we got into the market first....

Germany To Cut Eurofighter Order, Seek Exports

BERLIN - Germany's coalition government has confirmed that the Luftwaffe will not receive its final batch of Eurofighters. To date, Germany has firmly committed to 143 aircraft; now Tranche 3B, covering the final 37 jets originally planned for the Luftwaffe, will instead be made available for export.

Faced with penalties for non-acceptance of the 37 remaining aircraft, the German government has decided to put these Eurofighters up for sale, under an agreement issued by the new coalition government. The decision may appease Eurofighter officials, since there will be no reduction in the original 180-aircraft German order.

Industry, however, will not be able to benefit from any additional work that would have been created by a new export order. The Luftwaffe, long committed to its planned 180 Eurofighters, is yet to comment.

Finding a customer for the Tranche 3B aircraft may not be easy. EADS is competing to sell Eurofighters in India's Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft competition. Switzerland is also examining the Eurofighter to meet its requirement for an F-5E Tiger II replacement.

Greece, which has already selected the Eurofighter once before, prior to canceling its options, may be seen as an outside chance when it reopens its fighter competition.

The 15 Eurofighters already diverted from the Luftwaffe to Austria could also be factored into total numbers, meaning that Germany would need to offload just 22 Tranche 3B jets. A similar offset arrangement was adopted by the United Kingdom when it diverted 24 RAF Typhoons to Saudi Arabia, and later took these aircraft out of its full 232-aircraft commitment.

The implications for the Luftwaffe are unclear. Plans called for the establishment of five Eurofighter wings, two of which (including a training unit) are now flying the jet. With Tranche 3A deliveries yet to begin, the air arm has some time to decide whether to ax one of the planned wings, as some politicians have campaigned for.
