Engineering Summer Jobs

Hi all

I really want to be an aeronautical engineer, and would like to start doing things in order to increase my knowledge. I am 16 (almost finshed the exam period ) and am looking for any jobs I could do to increase my knowledge of aircraft. Are there such jobs as these?
Also what could I do now to broaden my knowledge.

Many thanks

Buy Flight Sim 2002 Pro, buy a decent joystick and learn to fly - if you can't already. At least that way, you'll get to learn all the basics and will make the theory part of an aero uni degree a bit easier to understand and you can apply it to all those hours spent in front of the PC.

Good Luck

I'd suggest going down to your local light aviation airfield(s) and seeing what jobs are going over the summer. It may be fairly menial, washing aeroplanes, answering the phone, refuelling - but it's around aeroplanes, will give you loads of chances to chat to (and more important listen to) people who spend their lives around aeroplanes - including most likely aviation professionals from all arenas, and the odds are you'll have good fun as well.

If you post on here where you live, I and a few others should be able to make some suggestions about where you could try.

Thanks Ghengis

I live in the Berkshire area, so anywhere around there will be great, however, I am willing to travel further..say booker or blackbushe.

Thanks

Not an awful lot in Berkshire, but I think that there's some kind of maintenance setup at Brimpton (a little E of Newbury), try phoning Sylmar Aviation on 01635-866066.

You could try going over to White Waltham (between Reading and Maidenhead) and asking around - it's a big place with not only the main airfield and flying club, but quite a lot of small aviation businesses there.

Ditto Thruxton, which is a little way West of Andover.

There's a microlight school at Chiltern Park, which is about 4m NW of Reading. I've no idea if they are big enough to offer any summer work, but you can't do yourself any harm by trying. Same applies to the microlight school at Clench Common, just South of Clench common. The problem with these for you as a 16YO, is they'll probably both be almost impossible to get to without a car or aeroplane.

But basically, go around the houses, talk to them in person, be polite and presentable, and honest about what you're after - the worst that can happen is that they say no.

And best of luck,
