Question Fuel Reserves in Oz

A quick question if I may concerning Oz fuel requirements. Specifically, I'm thinking about the 20 minutes of extra required when operating into Oz from abroad.
Over and above the alternate, holding etc. etc. for most any destination worldwide, our company loads an extra 20 minutes due to "Oz requirements". My understanding is that the 20 minutes is just that, a one time 20 minutes of extra holding fuel. The other pilot with me, who is Australian by the way, stated that the requirement is for 20 minutes of holding at destination, followed by an additional 20 minutes at alternate, over and above the normal 30 minutes of holding. He wanted 20 mins holding at BNE, followed by diversion to Sydney where we would arrive with 30 minutes PLUS the 20 minutes additional extra. All of this in addition to contingency fuel etc. etc.
That seems to me to be a bit excessive, as well as certainly uneconomical.
Can one of you silver tongued Ozmates please enlighten this poor cousin as to your regs?

Rule #1 Don't run out of fuel.

BNE problems should be sorted out now - they were the pits.

Whats in the NOTAM is usually for traffic delays and company policy should dictate if this can be combined with other holding requirements for wx etc.

One significant difference with Oz is that you are not required to carry an alternate for every flight - we only carry an alternate when the weather falls below the alternate minima - and if it falls below the alternate minima for 30 or 60 ie inter ot tempo, we only carry 30 or 60 minutes extra fuel - not the alternate.

It is possible (though not real smart!) that an aircraft - even a RPT jet can arrive with 30 minutes gas, having burnt the 10% variable reserve enroute....

So in order to avoid multiple fuel emergencies, ATC nominate traffic holding fuel - ie carry 20 minutes during these hours for traffic.

I believe that there may be a move to mandatory alternates under the new CASR's, which will really cut down the payloads- in some cases the nearest alternate is hundreds of miles away...

Some destinations have additional fuel requirements (in minutes) to allow for traffic. These are listed in the Enroute Supplement (Australia) or in notams if they're temporary.

It's up to operators to have company policy on how much they carry, but there's a CASA advisory publication (available on their website at www.casa.gov.au I think?) that gives the suggested figures for different classes of operation, and turbine vs piston.

e.g. flight fuel plus fuel to alternate, plus 10 percent of that as variable reserve plus 30 minutes fixed reserve, etc. etc.
