What's happening at Bankstown
Thanks 'TMB' for the reminiscences.
I trained at the Royal, commenced in '63 on Chippys, and stayed there only because of the Chippys - nobody else used them at the time.
I did fly with some marvellous people, but did my CPL / Instr elsewhere on the field.
Those were quite busy days as well, and the 'all over' field was something I look back on and wonder just how we managed to keep all of those silly little aeroplanes doing circuits in an 'orderly' manner.
I think we called most of it 'Airmanship', and we wore it like a badge.
Cheers. (Thread drift I know, but I did wait awhile.....)

Grandpa Aerotart
Has it occurred to anyone else that the 'business plan' that the purchase of the GAAP aerodromes was based on may not survive a decent recession...like the one we are on the brink of at the moment.
Seems to me the next shoe to fall in the massive worldwide de-leveraging we are seeing is commercial property...plumeting values and relatively meager returns from industrial real estate faced with low occupancy rates and very tight financing requirements, if you can get it at all, might see these blood suckers off.
Will be painful in the short/medium term as they attempt to 'maximise shareholder returns' out of the few remaining aviation businesses as the non aviation businesses on the aerodromes shut down/go broke etc and new tenants suddenly aint so thick on the ground as they were in the last 10 years.
Might be interesting to watch...would the GAAPs back in Govt control be a possible outcome...or even better sold off to a consortium of the airport's aviation tenants at cents on the $ because the lease says 'Must remain an airport' and the BAL goes broke?
Nice to dream anyway.

I dunno Chuck,
The lease holders have already PAID in full for the leases, for the 90 years or whatever, via bank loans or whatever, to the Fed Govt. - and although the Aviation clientelle may dwindle somewhat as the 'crunch' bites harder, those other business in the Business Park will probably continue to survive - mostly
because they are mostly BIG businesses.
And, for the life of me, I can't see the Govt refunding the lease fee, nor any part thereof...
e.g. At JT, I have heard that 'Hardly Normal' are putting in the 'biggest white goods store in the S. Hemisphere' - why?
Because it is on 'Commonwealth' land and therefore not subject to the WA State Trading Law Restrictions - so they (so it is told) will be able to trade 24/7 / 365 if they so desire.
So there is one BIG business that might 'feel' the crunch, but perhaps not get knocked out by it.
I don't know what the other businesses on that part of the leased property are, but they are well away from the 'active' area.
So, if the aviation side of it doesn't pay, then the 'Specials' may not be 'real specials' with a hefty rent increase....
But is is NICE to dream - that they all go 'broke' and the leases revert to the aviation tenants - after all - it is supposed to be a bloody airport - ain't it??

Of course there's more to the story, but..........

On the rental. In my line of work (economics of resourse allocation) there is a thing called 'public good'. That means if the public gets a value from the good then the price structure should be different.
So, how would you argue a 'public good' case for YSBK???
Hints, RFDS, safety, bushfire, police, rescue, transport etc.
The case of the hangars is different. Given they were built on the expectation of contact A and resumed under contract B I would suggest common law applies. But, against BAL or the Commonwealth???
ATC and circuit closures. Oh dear!!!!!!
Wait a minute, UNICOM, who needs ATC

Thanks for the comments, I recall the names you mentioned, good times and good memories.
Sorry for the delay in replying, I have just returned from a two month vacation visiting a few of these "old timers".

Airmanship
Ex FSO Griffo 20/12/08:
Sorry for the delay in replying but have been doing some visiting of old friends.
I was an instructor at the Royal, on the Chippys and other aircraft, during 1960 and 1961. The all over field concept was part of the folklore of Bankstown, it all worked and your reference to "Airmanship" was a good badge. I was lucky enough to win a
" Butler Air Transport Trophy " presented for Airmanship in March 1958. The term Airmanship is just as valid today as it was all those years ago.
After the Royal I went over the Mountains to progress my long career in Aviation.

Just read the following in the 'From the Tower' newsletter;
"2008 may have seen the beginnings of the global
economic downturn but that didn’t seem to have an
effect on operations at Bankstown, with the aerodrome
taking back the record as the busiest in Australia.
Bankstown recorded a total of 362206 movements for
the calendar year, the most being in May with an
incredible 41566. That figure in May is believed to be
the most ever recorded in one month by an aerodrome in
Australia.
Coming in second place was Jandakot in W.A with
356920 and third was taken by Moorabin in VIC with
350426. Going off these figures G.A appears to be alive
and well in Australia.
The recent closure of Hoxton Park has seen an increase
in traffic both at Bankstown and also our neighbour
down the road, Camden."

Has anyone else seen the BK "fly neighbourly" guide that BAL have put out. Personally I'd like to do all the opposite of those things just to annoy the morons that built next to an airport...

Hey come on...
While I haven't read the Fly Neighbourly instructions that you're talking about, what you're saying isn't exactly going to help the situation is it?
I haven't heard too many complaints from the community about Bankstown Airport lately.

Bankstown ( when an all over field)
I recall a story told that when an all over field, there was a windsock on the south western edge on a piece of land that jutted into the field area. As Murphy's law would have it, eventually, it caught a "Tiger", by the pilot looking out the left, with the windsock on the right.
